Greater Western Sydney power forward Jonathon Patton suffered a knee injury on Saturday as his fledgling AFL side crashed to a 72-point loss to St Kilda in Canberra.

Patton screamed in pain when he was tackled into the turf by Saint Rhys Stanley midway through the second term at Manuka Oval.

The 2011 No.1 draft pick immediately clutched his right knee and was unable to stand up.

The 19-year-old was helped off the field and down the race by two GWS officials, emerging after halftime on crutches with an ice pack strapped to his knee.

It was a sour point for the record crowd of 11,092 - GWS's best at Manuka - in a game the hosts lost on the back of a dreadful opening term.

St Kilda became just the third team to hold the Giants scoreless for a whole quarter, easing to a 34-point lead at the first break en route to a 21.14 (140) to 10.8 (68) victory.

The Saints had booted 5.4 to 0.0 at quarter-time. If they kicked straight, the game would have been as good as over then.

As it was, the visitors' advantage was never called into question.

They were harder at the ball, as depicted by a 139-109 contested possession count, while on-ballers David Armitage, Nick Dal Santo and Leigh Montagna used it intelligently.

This was also a game of contrasting forward lines - one side had a bounty of targets while the other struggled to find one.

For GWS, ruckmen Dean Brogan and Jonathan Giles combined for four goals, while midfielders Devon Smith and Adam Treloar also kicked two apiece.

In contrast, St Kilda small forwards Stephen Milne (three goals), Ahmed Saad (three) and Terry Milera (two) were magnificent in both their pressure and presence up forward.

Beau Maister (2.3) and captain Nick Riewoldt (3.2) were also ominous, albeit not as accurate as the side's mosquito fleet.peArmitage kicked four goals and tallied 31 disposals to be best afield.

A serious setback would be shattering for Patton, who had started to show signs of his potential after benefiting from a full pre-season.

The talented teenager, who attracted comparisons to Jonathan Brown in his junior career, had his maiden season curtailed by surgery on his left knee in Sweden last year.

St Kilda had their own injury concern, with Jack Newnes (concussion) substituted out early in the second quarter.

Blues blow out Hurricanes

Powering over ... Blues' big man james Parsons forces his way over to score. Source: FOX SPORTS

Led by rangy flanker Steven Luatua, the home side delivered a strong performance in the sort of open game where the Hurricanes usually thrive, scoring four unanswered tries to snare their fourth win from seven.

The Hurricanes sank to their third loss, outclassed in a similar fashion to when the Blues won the championship opener 34-20 in Wellington two months ago.

On the day when former Blues and All Blacks blindside flanker Jerome Kaino announced he wants to return to New Zealand rugby, it was timely that Luatua should produce a virtuoso display in the No.6 jersey. He maintained his prominent ball-running from recent weeks while adding some tireless defence and lineout skill to his tick column.

The rest of his teammates also rose to the occasion as the Blues built on a stronger scrum and quicker tackle ball for halfback Piri Weepu, who had another influential game.

Weepu's jink from a ruck and link with brilliant fullback Charles Piutau sent winger Frank Halai across in the 12th minute.

The Hurricanes reduced the deficit to one point through a dropped goal by five-eighth Tusi Pisi and penalty to fullback Beauden Barrett.

After going close to scoring several times, the Blues finally broke through for their second try on the stroke of halftime when Piutau burst onto a slick inside pass from centre Francis Saili.

Up 14-6, the hosts virtually secured victory with more than 20 minutes remaining when hooker James Parsons and prop Tom McCartney both scored.

Piutau nearly had his second but couldn't ground a grubber kick cleanly while Luatua showed his worth to the end, denying Hurricanes reserve back Rey Lee-Lo a try when he held him over the line.

Hurricanes danger winger Julian Savea was well contained while his younger brother Ardie wasn't as prominent as in his debut match against the Waratahs last week.

The Blues enjoy a break next week while the Hurricanes are home to the Western Force.

Classy Storm beat gutsy Rabbits

Now only the Storm can boast a perfect record after six rounds, the premiers unbeaten since July last year after emerging three-tries-to-two winners in a match which lived-up to its blockbuster billing.

In their first visit to ANZ Stadium since securing the 2012 title, the Storm were directed brilliantly by halfback Cooper Cronk, who set up tries with both passes and kicks before icing the game with a field goal four minutes from fulltime.

The Rabbitohs only made two errors in the opening half but both were punished as Cronk first set up Kevin Proctor and then Mahe Fonua.

Former Storm star Greg Inglis did his best to drag Souths over the with an athletic leap for his side's first try eight minutes after halftime to make it 12-6, and at that stage the home side was full of running and the 32,671-strong crowd full of voice.

Burgess brothers Sam and George were bending the line with every run, but calls for a Billy Slater knock-on on his own line went ignored when another try loomed.

A minute later the Storm were out by 10 points when Gareth Widdop beat three defenders from 10 metres out.

Some Souths heads dropped but there was still life when Andrew Everingham dived over in the corner with eight minutes to go, but this is a Storm side that just knows how to win as Cronk extended their lead beyond a converted try.

Late drama threatened when Slater was sin-binned after a try-saver on Nathan Merritt with less than two minutes remaining, but time and a relentless Storm were against the Rabbitohs.

I won't step down - Hird

Under Fire ... AFL chief Andrew Demetriou has said James Hird should consider his position Source: Wayne Ludbey / News Limited

Essendon coach James Hird has dismissed suggestions from AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou that he consider standing down.

Demetriou said on Friday morning Hird should consider stepping down while investigations into the Bombers' drugs program are completed.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

But Hird responded to the comments in Perth by saying he was planning for the Bombers' clash against Fremantle.

"I won't be stepping down," he said.

The Herald Sun revealed the Bombers coach will tell anti-doping investigators he received two injections from sports scientest Stephen Dank, but will deny they contained illegal drugs.

Demetriou said Hird must at least weigh up standing aside from his role while the matters are being investigated, then returning to the role if cleared.

"As he goes through his thought process ... that is an option he has to consider," Demetriou told 3AW when asked if Hird should temporarily stand aside from coaching the Bombers.

"He has got an outstanding position in this game. He's been a wonderful servant to the Essendon Football Club, an ornament to AFL football.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

"He's entitled to be able to put his position forward, which he will get the opportunity (to do) next week with ASADA.

"In the interim, those are the things that will have to cross his mind when he's contemplating what he's going to say to ASADA."

Demetriou stopped short of saying he'd like Hird to step aside.

"What is fair to say is that Essendon, who came forward ... instituted their own investigation about the governance and the processes. That will be released in the not too distant future," he said.

"Any person, regardless of their role at the club, who puts the duty of the care of their players at risk, will be held accountable."

Asked if he thought Essendon hierarchy had widespread knowledge of the substance injecting program and a clear chain of command in implementing it, Demetriou said there were many details yet to be revealed.

"I'm privy to information that goes beyond what's been reported," Demetriou said on ABC radio.

But Demetriou wouldn't elaborate on what he knew, with ASADA yet to complete its investigation and Essendon's own report still to be released, but he said he was disappointed with the allegations which have engulfed both Hird and Essendon.

"You can't help but be disappointed, particularly as you find out more and understand more about what was going on," Demetriou said on 3AW.

"You'd appreciate I've got briefings that are more advanced than what's in the public domain. I think it's terribly important that we now get the investigations finalised quickly.

"Then we can get to the truth."

Demetriou confirmed it was not against AFL rules for coaches to use performance-enhancing drugs, provided they didn't encourage or direct players to use them.

"Under the current system, a coach who partakes in the use of performance-enhancing drugs is not covered by the WADA code," he said.

"A coach, however, who is instructive in allowing and has knowledge of the use of performance-enhancing drugs, through means of directing individuals, is covered by the WADA code."

Demetriou's latest comments came after email exchanges emerged that show Hird put rules in place for the use of supplements within the Essendon program.

They included strict stipulations that the supplements must not harm the players, must not be illegal under WADA and ASADA guidelines and that the club must get player permission before using them.

Dodgers and Padres duke it out

Basebrawl ... the benches clear at Petco Park after a Zack Greinke pitch strikes Carlos Quentin. Source: AAP

Los Angeles pitcher Zack Greinke signed a monster $147 million contract in the off-season, but the Dodgers' stud will miss time after being injured in a spiteful clash.

San Diego outfielder Carlos Quentin took exception to being hit on the arm by a pitch in the sixth inning and charged at Greinke when words were exchanged.

After the bench-clearing brawl, it emerged that Greinke had broken his left collarbone in the skirmish that saw he, Quentin, Matt Kemp and Jerry Hairston Jnr. ejected from the game at San Diego's Petco Park.

Quentin is no stranger to taking bruises. The 30-year-old led Major League Baseball in being hit by pitches in 2011 (23) and 2012 (17). He's been plunked 116 times in his career, including three from Greinke - the last being in 2009 before Thursday's clash.

The Dodgers were left fuming and security was forced to step in to separate players who were still boiling over outside the locker room several hours after the game concluded.

Furious Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly blamed the incident on Quentin and said he "shouldn't play a game until Greinke can pitch" - which is likely to be six to eight weeks.

The Dodgers won 3-2 and the teams face each other again in what looms as a potentially spiteful series in just three days time at Dodger Stadium.

The Brumbies continued their trend of blitzing sides early, opening the scoring in the third minute when winger Henry Speight brushed off his opposite Hosea Gear, stepped inside fullback Ben Smith and then carried Ma'a Nonu over the line.

However the blistering start was immediately overshadowed by an injury to Brumbies outside centre Andrew Smith.

The Highlanders bounced back immediately through three penalty goals to debutant flyhalf Hayden Parker after keeping the ball closer to the fringes of the ruck to narrow the score to 10-9.

But the Brumbies didn't fall away from their gameplan, with fullback Jesse Mogg and halfback Nic White bombing the Highlanders from the midfield and then applying pressure through a strong chase.

The tactic paid dividends in the 31st minute when the Highlanders failed to clean up a Mogg rainmaker and the Brumbies were rewarded with the 5m line-out from which Smith scored.

Gear looked to have crossed the line for the home side in the 37th minute when he crashed through three defenders but the TMO controversially ruled he lost it forward centimetres from the ground.

Parker soon added another three points for the Highlanders to limit the Brumbies' lead to five points going into the break.

The Highlanders aimed to limit the pressure from the Brumbies kicking game in the second half, chancing their arm by running it more.

But the Brumbies' chasing line continued to make it difficult for the Highlanders, forcing several turnovers after the home side lost counter-attacking ace Poki to a rib injury.

A long-range penalty to halfback Nic White and then Lealiifano's second penalty of the night extended the Brumbies lead to 11 points in the 49th minute.

Winger Joe Tomane swooped on a Highlanders knock-on and ran 55 metres to score under the posts to give the Brumbies a 30-12 lead in the 54th minute.

Halfback Aaron Smith came off the bench in the second half to snipe across for a try late in the match for the home team.

SBW shines against former club

Playing against the Bulldogs for the first time since walking out on the club to pursue a rugby union career 1753 days ago, Williams scored two tries and set up another with his first touch of the ball.

It was the sort of performance which had two-time premiership-winning coach Phil Gould claiming the dual international could carry the Roosters to a premiership on his own back - and few of the 22,552 who were there to witness the performance would disagree.

The healthy Bulldogs contingent which turned up to give it to the man they hadn't forgiven for his clandestine departure in 2008 also made an early exit, Williams' second try 18 minutes from time too much to bear as they headed home.

By that stage, it was 26-0 but, in truth, the game was over far earlier with the Bulldogs a shadow of the side which stormed to last year's minor premiership - Canterbury now with just one win from their opening six games.

The Roosters are flying following their fourth victory of 2013, Williams wasting little time to silence the chanting Bulldogs fans with a brilliant cut-out pass for Roger Tuivasa-Sheck on nine minutes starting the rot.

Despite their dominance, the Roosters only added a James Maloney penalty before halftime but, from the restart, the floodgates opened, Williams sealing his first try with a high five for a lucky fan in the crowd.

The man the Bulldogs hoped would be the new SBW in the blue and white, namesake Tony Williams, continued his struggles when he dropped the ball millimetres from the tryline, the Roosters making them pay when Daniel Mortimer backed up a Maloney break to make it 20-0.

The tries continued to flow for the home side with Williams powering over Josh Morris for his second before fellow new signing Maloney and Michael Jennings crossed as the Roosters held their opponents scoreless for the third time this season.

Hird-Dank text boasts revealed

Allegations ... James Hird is again under fire. Source: Chris Scott / News Limited

UPDATE: Leaked text messages allegedly reveal James Hird and Stephen Dank boasting about Essendon's drugs supplement program.

The text messages, shown on Channel 9, have not been verified, but appear to show a close relationship between the Bombers coach and the sports scientist at the centre of the club's controversial injections program.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Hird has declared he will coach Essendon against Fremantle on Friday night and the club stood by him after claims emerged he had been injected by Dank with a substance banned for use by players.

Channel 9 says it has six months' worth of text messages between Hird and Dank, including the following exchanges:

Hird: Good work today mate. The boys were up and about. We have lots to work with.

Dank: IV start next week. And Thymosin and Ubiquinone. We will start to see some real effects.

Dank: Is (player) in your best 22?

Hird: At his best, yes. Why?

Dank: I am just working out his injections for the year. As an older leaner body I might infuse him more particularly for the recovery. I often IV the older bodies.

Dank: I also know that they (a rival club) are trying everything they can in supplements and recovery modes to win this premiership.

Hird: But not as good as us in that area!!!

Earlier, AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said the drug allegations levelled at James Hird were as serious as allegations get but he won't be stood down.

Demetiou fronted the media in Sydney on Thursday, saying the report that Hird had been injected with a banned substance was "very disturbing."

"These are very serious allegations, in fact, I can't think of anymore serious," he said.

"The issues surrounding the alleged use of banned substances is very distrubing, particularly when we are talking about the health and welfare of young men.

"There is an investigation ongoing and that investigation needs to continue. We do not conclude investigations on the basis of newspaper reports."

There is no suggestion that the drug is illegal or that Hird would be in breach of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) rules if it is proved he took the drugs.

Sports scientist Stephen Dank has claimed he injected Hird with a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Hird said on Thursday morning that the allegation was "very upsetting".

A sombre Hird was met by a media pack at 7.30am as he left his Toorak home for Essendon's training session at Windy Hill.

"It's hard to make comment ... but I will make comment to these upsetting claims," Hird said from his driveway.

"But at present, I can't because of the AFL/ASADA investigation, and once my part of that's finished I will respond to these very upsetting claims.

"That's all."

James Hird ... leaving his home. Source: News Limited

Demetriou praised Hird's standing in the game and his legacy at Essendon.

"James Hird is one of the finest players to play the game, he is one of thes finiest contributors to the Essendon Football Club in its long and proud history," he said.

"I'm sure, at this moment, he is feeling very disturbed at these allegations."

However, he made it clear that any coach or official who was found to have had a hand in illegal substances would be punished.

"Any coach or official puts the duty of care of their players at risk, then they will held accountable," Demetriou said.

A former head of ASADA said coaches are not asked to comply with the same rules as their players when it comes to banned substances.

While not commenting directly on the allegations, Richard Ings told 3AW radio the substances in question were not banned for coaches.

"These substances are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency code for players. If coaches are using such a banned substance it is not banned under the World Anti-Doping Agency code or the AFL anti-doping policy," Mr Ings said.

A club source told the Herald Sun: "James will fight this ... this is not true. James is an honorable person, these people are disreputable and the club will not rest until his name is fully cleared. This is an outrageous allegation."

It is also claimed that Hird was aware of the entire supplements program at Essendon, which included taking players off site for injections, and that the players signed consent forms listing the type of supplements they'd be taking.

It's been reported a number of players took a form of pig's brain peptides, and an anti-obesity drug.

It's believed investigations by the club and ASADA will see the Bombers admit to not doing due diligence on the employment of staff, and "irregular practices".

Dank, who is at the centre of allegations about the use of performance-enhancing drugs in rugby league, made the latest claims in an interview with Fairfax Media.

The Herald Sun can reveal Hird had three stringent rules forming the basis of the supplement program:

THE players' welfare was the No.1 priority.

ALL supplements were to be ticked off by ASADA.

EVERYTHING was to be ticked off by the club doctor. It's understood the third rule was not always adhered to.

Dank continues to maintain none of the substances he gave players was in breach of the world anti-doping code or AFL rules.

"Before I've done anything in any forum, we have always had conversations with WADA or ASADA - or in some cases both," he said.

"They were always well informed of anything we were about to use. Nothing was ever used without asking them first and, in some cases, both parties were asked.

"Never once was anything indicated to me that we would have issues in terms of anything we used."

But he said Hird knew of the supplements program.

"Look, to be perfectly honest, a couple of coaches were using supplements that were a little bit outside the WADA code, but again they were entitled to (do) it, and nothing illegal in those."

Essendon have growing confidence players will be cleared of any link to performance-enhancing drugs.

The club's internal review into "irregular practices" is due in coming weeks.

'Maguire had to threaten Taylor'

Fox Sports expert Matthew Johns has revealed South Sydney Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire would have to threaten to axe Dave Taylor in order for him to perform last season.

The back rower was dumped by the Titans this week after breaching team rules and will miss two weeks of football as a result.

Discussing Taylor's disciplinary issues since joining the Gold Coast Titans on Sterlo, Johns revealed that his former coach would struggle to motivate Taylor on a weekly basis.

"He does a very good impersonation of someone who doesn't care," Johns said on Sterlo.

"When you watched him last year at South Sydney, you know there's a problem when he's playing at his barnstorming best and he's unstoppable and right in the middle of that purple patch, the Rabbitohs flag and say 'we want to let him go'.

"Michael Maguire, to get (Taylor) to run a hole off young (Halfback Adam) Reynolds, he had to threaten to drop him continually. It's like re-painting the harbour bridge every single week threatening to drop Dave, to get Dave to buy in and obviously John Cartwright is going through the same thing.

"It makes you wonder why god would bestow such physical gifts on someone who is so unwilling to use it."

Demons axe Watts, Kerr back for Eagles

Back in action ... Kerr returns to the Eagles' line-up for their clash with the Demons. Source: News Limited

Melbourne Demons have dropped former No.1 draft pick Jack Watts among five changes as they seek to recover from their horror AFL season start.

David Rodan, Sam Blease and Daniel Nicholson were also dumped from the side that lost to Essendon by 148 points last round, while Tom Gillies (groin) was forced out.

Demons football manager Josh Mahoney said changes for Saturday's MCG clash with West Coast had been inevitable given the side's performances.

He said Watts's form had slipped after a promising pre-season.

"Unfortunately over the last two weeks, he hasn't performed at that level," Mahoney told Melbourne's website.

Rohan Bail was among the inclusions, after spending the pre-season and early season battling concussion-related issues.

The Eagles have been strengthened by the return from injury of star pair Mark LeCras and Daniel Kerr.

Winless Carlton have made four changes for Saturday night's meeting with Geelong.

Heath Scotland returns from a club-imposed suspension, tall forward Shaun Hampson from an appendix complaint, while Dylan Buckley, son of Blues three-time premiership player Jim, will make his AFL debut.

Geelong star forward-midfielder Steve Johnson will play his first game of the season, after recovering from knee surgery, but midfielder James Kelly (calf) is out.

Collingwood veteran ruck recruit Ben Hudson will debut for his fourth AFL club in Sunday's big MCG clash with Hawthorn, after the Magpies lost Darren Jolly to a rib injury.

Collingwood have also lost captain Nick Maxwell (wrist) but regained Dale Thomas.

The Hawks will be without midfield gun Brad Sewell (hamstring) and won't risk ex-Western Bulldogs recruit Brian Lake.

St Kilda have lost premiership players Adam Schneider (hamstring) and Sean Dempster (hand) for Saturday night's Canberra clash with Greater Western Sydney.

They've been replaced by debutants Tom Lee and Nathan Wright.

The Giants have lost Rhys Palmer (calf).

Fremantle welcome back Hayden Ballantyne from suspension for Friday night's match against Essendon in Perth.

The Bombers made two changes, losing Mark Baguley (ankle) and dropping Jackson Merrett.

Brisbane Lions have lost Claye Beams (knee) and dropped Patrick Karnezis and Ryan Lester as they seek their first win of the season against Gold Coast Suns on Saturday night.

The Suns will be without Tom Murphy (shoulder) and Dion Prestia (hip).

Former Gold Coast player Taylor Hine represents North Melbourne for the first time against Sydney Swans in Hobart on Saturday, while the premiers have lost Rhyce Shaw (abdominal strain).

Richmond have named ex-Adelaide Crows recruit Chris Knights in their extended squad for a potential Tigers debut against Western Bulldogs on Sunday, while backman Easton Wood returns from injury to the Bulldogs' squad.

Former skipper Dom Cassisi has been included in Port Adelaide's squad to face Adelaide on Sunday.

Daley Mail: 'Storm are team to beat'

Real test ... Laurie Daley thinks the Storm will be the first true measure of the Rabbitohs. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

Laurie Daley believes Saturday night's battle for top of the table between South Sydney and Melbourne will be the first real measuring stick of how far the Rabbitohs have come.

With the ANZ Stadium clash of the only unbeaten sides so far this year clearly round six's blockbuster match, Loz feels the Bunnies will have to bring an 80-minute performance to have any chance against the Storm.

"Melbourne are still the team to beat in this year's competition and I think Melbourne consistently produce good performances," says Daley.

"South Sydney, while they're unbeaten, they've had moments during their games which they may have lost had the opposition been good enough."

See what else Loz has to say in his video previews of the round below.

Brisbane Broncos v North Queensland Cowboys, Suncorp Stadium, Friday 7.35pm (EST).

"This should be one of the games of the season given that both Queensland sides like to play against one another," says Daley.

Sydney Roosters v Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Allianz Stadium, Friday 7.35pm (EST).

"The Bulldogs haven't been at their best, but they've over the years proven that when their backs are against the wall they play their best football," says Daley.

Newcastle Knights v Penrith Panthers, Hunter Stadium, Saturday 5.30pm (EST). LIVE on Fox Sports 1HD

"Newcastle are a side that, when they get it right, can be a dangerous team because they've got all bases covered," says Daley.

Canberra Raiders Warriors, Canberra Stadium, Saturday 7.30pm (EST).

"When I look at this Canberra side, they're well talented, they're well coached, but consistency is a huge problem," says Daley.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v Melbourne Storm, ANZ Stadium, Saturday 7.30pm (EST). LIVE on Fox Sports 1HD

"This biggest highlight, if Billy Slater plays, is the clash of the No.1's because they're both in scintillating form," says Daley.

Manly Sea Eagles v Cronulla Sharks, Brookvale Oval, Sunday 2.00pm (EST). LIVE on Fox Sports 1HD

"Emotionally it's always tough to get up for games week in, week out when you've got things hanging over your heads (like Cronulla)," says Daley.

Wests Tigers v St George Illawarra Dragons, Sydney Cricket Ground, Sunday 3.00pm (EST).

"If the Tigers can replicate what they did on Monday night, they're a good chance of beating the Dragons," says Daley.

Gold Coast Titans v Parramatta Eels, Skilled Park, Sunday 6.30pm (EST). LIVE on Fox Sports 1HD

"Whatever team can control possession will win this game," says Daley.

Wests Tiger Blair escapes ban

Wests Tigers ... forward Adam Blair free to play this weekend. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

Wests Tigers forward Adam Blair successfully avoided an NRL ban after pleading his case in front of the judiciary on Wednesday night, providing the struggling joint-venture club with a rare boost.

The Tigers have failed to get going in 2013, slumping to three losses from their opening five games and, on Wednesday, lost star playmaker Benji Marshall to a toe injury for at least a month.

But Blair's successful night at the judiciary gives them a significant lift ahead of Sunday's all-important showdown with St George Illawarra at the SCG.

"Adam felt he didn't have a case to answer and was very keen to contest the charge. He was glad he got a fair hearing and is looking forward to playing the Dragons," Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys said.

"The club would like to thank barrister Nicholas Ghabar for his hard work on this case and for helping Adam beat the charge."

Already boasting a mounting injury list that includes prop Keith Galloway and winger Marika Koroibete as well as Marshall, the Tigers will also be without second-rower Bodene Thompson who copped a one-week ban after pleading guilty to a grade-one dangerous contact charge.

Thompson was sanctioned for making contact with kicker Gareth Widdop at AAMI Park, and will be back to face Brisbane at Campbelltown Stadium on April 27.

But just hours after news they'd be without Marshall, Blair successfully argued his case in front of the judiciary, who threw out his grade-one dangerous contact charge.

Blair was placed on report in the 60th minute of the Tigers' loss to Melbourne on Monday after pulling the leg of Storm back-rower Kevin Proctor.

He will be available for New Zealand in Friday week's Test match with Australia in Canberra.

Marshall will certainly miss the Test match, and at least a month of NRL action after the Tigers confirmed scans had revealed he had suffered a toe ligament injury in the loss to Melbourne.

There had been fears the 'turf toe' injury could rule Marshall out for up to three months, but the club remains hopeful the former Test skipper, despite being forced to wear a moon boot for the next fortnight, will be available to face Cronulla in round nine.

"The toe doesn't look too good actually - it's pretty bruised and swollen," Tigers captain Robbie Farah told Triple M radio.

"Our physio explained it's a similar sort of injury as doing your ligament in your knee but it's a similar ligament in your big toe.

"Thankfully it doesn't require surgery but he's going to be out for a few weeks."

Marshall's replacement has yet to be named.

Tim Moltzen has experience in the halves, and a move would allow youngster James Tedesco to shift from the wing to his preferred role at fullback, while halfback Jacob Miller was only recently dropped to reserve grade.

Heart issue threatens Docker's career

Concern ... Jayden's Pitt playing future is unclear at the moment. Source: Daniel Wilkins / News Limited

Fremantle midfielder Jayden Pitt hopes his AFL career isn't over despite being diagnosed with a heart irregularity.

Pitt's career has been put on hold since the irregularity was discovered during the pre-season, with the 20-year-old using his time away from the club to seek opinions from cardiologists in Perth and Melbourne.

But Pitt says he hasn't been forced to retire just yet, despite reports to the contrary.

"At this stage, I'm working closely with the doctors, my family and the club to determine where we go from here,'' Pitt said in a statement on Wednesday.

"With that level of support, I'm remaining upbeat and continue to have a positive outlook as far as playing football goes.''

Pitt has played 10 games for the Dockers since being chosen with pick No.20 in the 2010 national draft.

Scans on Wednesday afternoon confirmed Brisbane Lions midfielder Claye Beams had ruptured his ACL.

The injury, to his left knee, was sustained earlier in the day during training.

Dean Warren, Lions general manager - football operations, said the injury was a huge disappointment for Claye and the club.

"Claye had an outstanding pre-season and was consolidating his position in our best 22 so, understandably, he is devastated by this setback," Warren said.

"We are certain Claye's strong character will get him through this tough period and that he will approach his rehabilitation with absolute professionalism."

The 21-year-old has played 15 senior games for the Lions, including the opening two rounds of this season.

Taylor has no conscience: Tallis

Dave Taylor ... doing it tough at Gold Coast training. Source: Tim Marsden / News Limited

Gorden Tallis has labelled troubled Gold Coast Titans forward Dave Taylor as someone who doesn't care and has no conscience.

The back rower was dumped by the Titans this week after breaching team rules and will miss two weeks of football as a result.

The Titans refused to elaborate on Taylor's two-match ban on Tuesday, with coach John Cartwright saying the Queensland State of Origin forward had broken team rules.

There were suggestions Taylor's attitude had not been right and that had contributed to Cartwright's stand.

Speaking on Fox Sports' NRL360, Tallis said he believes Taylor is disinterested and noncommittal.

"I think he's a guy that doesn't really care; I don't think he has a conscience," Tallis said.

"I think he does it for a lifestyle. He's going to be one of those guys that's going to move around club to club and everybody thinks they're going to get that special Dave Taylor.

"I just wish the penny would drop."

Tallis said Taylor's natural ability is on show for all to see but his mental strength is letting him down.

"On ability he could certainly be the most damaging forward that we could see," he said.

"He has great speed, a great step, every skill you want but he doesn't have the mentality to play with it.

"I just wish he would grow up a little bit."

Clarke named world player of 2012

On top of the world ... 2012 was a special year for Michael Clarke. Source: William West / AAP

Test captain Michael Clarke on Wednesday was named Wisden's leading cricketer of 2012, becoming only the third Australian to receive the honour.

He joins former skipper Ricky Ponting (2003) and legspinner Shane Warne (2004) in being given the accolade.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Clarke scored 1595 runs in the 2012 calendar year, including four double centuries, averaging a remarkable 106.33.

In the 150th edition of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, the historic publication said 2012 witnessed a full flowering of the lavish batting talent announced so spectacularly on debut by Clarke in Bangalore in 2004.

"It began with 329 not out against India, the biggest Test innings ever played at the SCG, curtailed only by his own declaration, with (Don) Bradman's (and Mark Taylor's) highest Test scores of 334 one hit away.

"A double century followed at Adelaide before, at the start of the 2012-13 season, free-hitting back-to-back doubles against South Africa. He rounded off the year with his first century in a Boxing Day Test, against Sri Lanka.

His score, 106, was also his calendar-year average; only Bradman, (Sir Garfield) Sobers and Ponting before him had reached New Year's Eve on such a plane. And his 2012 Test aggregate of 1595 placed him nearly 350 runs clear of his nearest rival, Alastair Cook.

Clarke said he felt very honoured to be named as Wisden's leading cricketer in the world.

"Given the esteemed history and tradition of the Wisden Cricketers Almanac, it is a very humbling accolade and one that I hold in the highest regard."

Clarke's accolade as leading world cricketer is a relatively new award, given for only the 10th time.

Eight others have won it including Warne and Ponting - with Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag doing so twice.

England batsman Nick Compton was named as one of Wisden's five cricketers of the year, joining his grandfather Denis who earned the accolade in 1939.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Compton is the only Englishman to receive the prestigious nod, which can only be given to an individual once in their career.

His form won an England call for the winter tours of India and New Zealand and he appears to have cemented his place as Andrew Strauss' replacement in time for a first Ashes series.

South African trio Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn join Compton, as does West Indian Marlon Samuels.

The cricketers of the year are nominated for their achievements in the previous English summer, with the Proteas players rewarded for their 2-0 Test series win over a home side they ultimately replaced as world No.1.

Samuels joined them having excelled for the West Indies earlier in the summer in the face of defeat.

Of the overseas contingent, the inclusion of Kallis is most surprising. Not because he was deemed worthy, but that it had not already happened before.

The 37-year-old allrounder is a colossus of the modern game and a key part of the South African side who so skilfully dismantled England on their own turf on their way to becoming the world's No.1 Test side.

Amla and Steyn are equally strong picks, the key batsman and key bowler in the sport's most formidable unit.

Antonis in talks with Parma: report

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 09 April 2013 | 18.48

In demand ... Terry Antonis could be heading to Italy. Source: Mark Evans / News Limited

Sydney FC young gun Terry Antonis is reportedly on the cusp of a move to the top league in Italy.

The World Game is reporting that the 19-year-old rising star is due to fly to Italy to discuss personal terms with Serie A club Parma, who have tabled an effort large enough to trigger an automatic release from Antonis's current contract.

The news emerged just weeks after it was revealed Antonis had earned a trial with Dutch club Utrecht, who already have Aussie stars Tommy Oar, Michael Zullo and Adam Sarota on their books.

But it now looks like Italy might be Antonis's destination, and he could join the club as soon as July, when the European summer transfer window opens.

Parma are currently sitting in 10th position in the Serie A, and would be hoping to challenge for a spot in Europe next season.

Antonis burst onto the scene as a raw 16-year-old with the Sky Blues, but a combination of injuries and international commitments with Australia's youth teams have seen him start just 27 A-League games so far.

NRL R6 teams: Benji, Campo named

Will he or won't he? ... Benji Marshall is named for the Tigers despite injuring his toe. Source: Brett Crockford / AAP

Terry Campese admits his long-awaited return from a knee injury feels like the build up for an NRL debut, as the Tigers join Canberra in feeling good fortune with a star playmaker.

While Wests Tigers face an agonising wait to find out the results of scans on five-eighth Benji Marshall's foot, Cronulla could again be without star No.6 Todd Carney (foot).

Marshall was named by coach Mick Potter to face St George Illawarra, but his place in the lineup will be firmly dependant on his recovery from a foot injury sustained in Monday night's loss to Melbourne.

Carney was not named for the Sharks clash with heavyweights Manly, with Chad Townsend retaining his spot in the halves alongside Jeff Robson.

Gold Coast's big off-season signing Dave Taylor will miss the next two matches after breaching team protocol - opening the door for Mark Minichiello's first appearance of the year.

Albert Kelly has been named for the Titans despite suffering a knee injury last week.

But the news was even better in the nation's capital, with Campese named on an extended bench for Saturday's clash with the Warriors.

Campese has played just eight games since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in 2010, but has convinced the Raiders medical staff he is ready to take the field once more.

"It feels like a debut again to be honest,'' Campese told reporters on Tuesday.

"I got a few emotions running through the body when the medical staff said I was right to go. I'm just excited once again.

"...It's been 12 months since the operation, so it feels like forever. All the hard work is finally paying off."

While Campese said his plan was to be back to his best "after about five minutes", centre Jarrod Croker said it was important for his teammates not to expect too much of the one-time Test representative.

Brisbane welcome back captain Sam Thaiday (suspension), while South Sydney skipper Michael Crocker, dropped to NSW Cup for the past two matches, is on a seven-man bench for Saturday's clash with Melbourne.

The Storm will be without Matt Duffie, who will miss seven weeks after dislocating his shoulder in NSW Cup - Sisa Waqa holds his place on the wing from Monday night's team, while former Origin half Brett Finch joins an extended bench for the first time this year.

Greg Eastwood returns for Canterbury's date with Sonny Bill Williams and the Sydney Roosters in coach Des Hasler's only change from last week's 20-6 loss to Manly.

St George Illawarra turned to Jason Nightingale as the replacement for fullback Gerard Beale (knee, season), with Daniel Vidot filling in on the wing.

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary is persisting with halves pairing Tom Humble and Blake Austin despite last round's 30-0 thrashing at the hands of North Queensland and Newcastle veteran Danny Buderus finds himself back on the bench after missing a week with back trouble.

Classy custodian ... Brett Stewart is Mark Gasnier's Gaz Man for round five. Source: Grant Trouville / News Limited

Former St George Illawarra superstar Mark Gasnier looks back on the fifth round of NRL action in 2013 and singles out his player of the week to be awarded The Gaz Man.

And the award, for his starring role in the Sea Eagles' big win over Canterbury-Bankstown, goes to...

BRETT STEWART

His attacking ability is always at the forefront of the game but I think his defence was outstanding. Billy Slater has set the bar for fullbacks in defence. Slater and Brett Stewart are amazing at stopping teams that get in behind.

There was one time against Canterbury-Bankstown that Matai was caught out and Stewart plugged that hole and stopped the Dogs having an overlap.

He is always going to be a try sniffer, he's always going to make linebreaks and get on the end of offloads, but I think his defence has really come on in leaps and bounds.

He is such a big part of why Manly have conceded so few points in the first five rounds.

He is what Billy Slater is to Melbourne. Manly would still create a lot without him, but they wouldn't finish as many.

His kick-chase is a real feature and he's ball-playing is getting better too.

Snake's still really developing his game. He's really pushing boundaries as to what he can contribute to the Sea Eagles.

Roar confident Broich will play

Optimistic ... Thomas Broich will have a fitness test later this week. Source: Peter Wallis / News Limited

German wizard Thomas Broich put on a brave face but his snail's pace exit from Brisbane's dressing room on crutches on Tuesday painted a different story about his chances of playing in Friday night's A-League semi-final against Western Sydney Wanderers.

"I've still got some time," said Broich, who was unexpectedly confronted by a gaggle of journalists who'd just interviewed Queensland Reds coach Ewen McKenzie and halfback Will Genia about their Super Rugby clash with the Chiefs this weekend.

Broich looked 100-1 to play as he hobbled to his car on crutches but Roar coach Mike Mulvey expressed confidence both his attacking general and Luke Brattan would play after scans cleared them of any structural damage out of last Sunday's elimination final win over Adelaide United.

Broich (lower leg) and Brattan, who was collected in a high challenge, face fitness tests later in the week.

However Mulvey said on Tuesday both had responded positively to treatment over the past 48 hours and he was confident they'd be fit to play.

"We're delighted with the progress both players have made over such a short period of time in regards to their respective injuries," Mulvey said.

"We have an excellent medical staff at the club and their diligence has been of paramount importance since the game on Sunday. I'm extremely confident both players will take to the field and play their part on Friday."

The medical report on fullback Jack Hingert was not so good, his scans confirming a high grade injury to ligaments in his right ankle, ruling him out of action for 4-6 weeks.

"We're bitterly disappointed for Jack," Mulvey said.

"He's a quality player and has been excellent for us in recent weeks."

Reds win fight to keep Hanson

Written By Unknown on Senin, 08 April 2013 | 18.48

Hooker ... James Hanson is set to stay at Ballymore. Source: Darren England / News Limited

Queensland Reds have fought off both Western Force and NSW Waratahs to keep rising Wallabies hooker James Hanson at Ballymore next season.

But fellow 2012 Test debutant Luke Morahan will leave the Reds to link with the Force in the search of more starting opportunities in Super Rugby.

Completing the Reds-Force tug-of-war, former Queensland prop and Force assistant coach Nick Stiles will return to his old franchise in 2014 as forwards coach.

The Reds are set to announce Hanson's re-signing in the coming days following a long fight to keep him in Brisbane after he started the first month of this season on the bench, hemmed in behind Saia Faingaa.

Hanson, 24, had been tipped to join the Force before the Waratahs also went hard for the rake's signature but opted to stick with the certainty of the Reds program and playing list.

"James had a lot of potential to move elsewhere in Australia in the last couple of weeks but we've had some really positive discussions,'' said head coach Richard Graham.

Hanson and Faingaa, who may return from a neck injury against the pacesetting Chiefs on Saturday, will continue to battle for the Reds No.2 jersey as well as Wallabies squad selection as third choice hooker behind Stephen Moore and Tatafu Polota-Nau.

Wallabies second-rower Rob Simmons has also agreed to stay in Brisbane but his next contract won't be finalised until after his top-up negotiations finish with the Australian Rugby Union.

Simmons and Hanson have been two of the Reds' most consistent forwards and their retention, staying with a team that has a number of Test stars already on contract for 2014, is a continued good sign for Queensland.

Morahan's loss comes as the blazing wing-fullback looks to establish himself as a regular starter after four years on the fringes with the Reds.

He started at fullback in Australia's opening Test of 2012 against Scotland but has been overlooked as Queensland No.15 in the past month with the rugged Jono Lance replacing an injured Mike Harris.

Morahan started on the wing in the Reds' last-start 34-33 win over the Highlanders but may again be dumped with Digby Ioane striving to return from a knee problem and fit-again Rod Davies also in the picture.

Director of coaching Ewen McKenzie is confident red-hot flanker Liam Gill (thumb) will start against the defending champion Chiefs in Hamilton, but back-up No.7 Beau Robinson's return from an ankle injury is still a couple of weeks away.

Mancini: rivals scared of United

Fear ... Roberto Mancini says Barclays Premier League sides fear Sir Alex's Red Devils. Source: Tim Hales / AFP

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini says his side are the equal of local rivals Manchester United, despite the fact they are well off the pace in the fight for the title.

Second-placed City trail Barclays Premier League leaders United by 15 points ahead of Monday's derby showdown at Old Trafford but Mancini refuses to accept their inferiority.

"We know we can beat them because they are not better than us," he said. "This is sure, 100 per cent.

"We deserved to win the game at the Etihad (in December, which United won 3-2 with a stoppage-time winner). Like them, we are a strong team. There is no difference

"We are young as a team and we don't have the same importance like United yet.

"The history is very important. We can't do this in two years but maybe in 10 years."

And Mancini thinks the gap between the Manchester teams would be smaller if other teams put up more of a fight against Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

"No one plays well against United, because they only play with fear," said the Italian.

"Every team that plays against them plays very soft, because they think this game is difficult, and they can't beat them. Their mentality is poor.

"They think they can do nothing, but it is not true. If you play strong against United, you can beat them, like they can beat us."

However, Mancini wants to take a leaf out of United's book to ensure his side bounce back from this season's disappointing title defence.

The Italian said: "Last year United didn't win anything - Community Shield yes - but they continue to improve their team.

Watch all the action live and in stunning HD from 4.45am (EST) on Tuesday on Fox Sports 1 HD.

"This can happen, you can't win every year. This is impossible in England. For this, I think we need to do better next year."

Mancini failed to land all his prime transfer targets last summer, but with new administration at the club he is confident of doing better this time around.

City did strike one important blow last week when Yaya Toure, after speculation he could leave, signed a new four-year contract and spoke of his confidence in the club's future.

Mancini said: "This is important for the club, it is important that they sign new contracts.

"We know that we should buy important players for next year if we want to improve.

Meanwhile, Ferguson has warned that United are 'not going away' next season, but expects a 'big challenge' from Chelsea if Jose Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge.

Ferguson is confident his squad will continue to develop and expects his team to be firmly in title contention again next term.

"We've got a lot of youth in the team, there's no doubt about that," said the Scot. "The record over the last 20 years tells you we're not going away. So I'd expect us without doubt to have a real good challenge next year.

"Plus we'll have players who are maturing nicely. Rafa [da Silva] has proved how much he's developed this season; the goalkeeper David de Gea's progress right through the season is absolutely superb and he'll get better next year. [Shinji] Kagawa will be a far better player next year, I'm certain about that.

The United boss anticipates the usual suspects will be in the mix for the title next season and is predicting a return to top form for Chelsea, if Mourinho returns to the club to replace current interim manager Rafa Benitez.

Ferguson added: "You'd expect - if Jose goes back to Chelsea - a big challenge there.

"[Manchester] City won't go away, with the money they've got. And I think Arsenal will improve - there's some indication that Arsenal are building a better squad than people think and Tottenham have been progressing for a couple of years now.

"So it's a hard league to win, there's no doubt about that. But at this moment in time we just need to concentrate on winning the league this year."

'Roar have edge on Wanderers'

Experience ... Luke Brattan believes the Roar have an edge over Western Sydney. Source: Sarah Marshall / News Limited

Gun midfielder Luke Brattan has declared Brisbane Roar hold a finals edge over A-League premiers Western Sydney but admits they could struggle to replace captain Thomas Broich.

Broich optimistically believes he will be right to line up against the Wanderers in Friday night's semi-final at Parramatta Stadium after injuring his heel badly on Sunday night in Adelaide.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Get Adobe Flash Player

The skilful German playmaker was replaced at halftime of the 2-1 victory over Adelaide United with severe bruising to his Achilles and lower calf, but will be given every chance to be fit in time to play.

"I should be alright,'' Broich said on Monday afternoon. ``It happened yesterday, give it a day or two, it might be gone. It's just massive bruising right now.''

Coach Mike Mulvey also remained confident of a quick recovery but did stress the Roar would not take any risks with the player seen as the best import in A-League history.

Broich helped set up Brisbane's opening goal against the Reds with a pin-point corner pass to Brattan who volleyed home from long-range.

Brattan, who only this year gained a regular start as the Roar's holding midfielder in place of the departed Erik Paartalu, said the club would miss Broich ``a lot'' if he failed to recover.

"We do have depth in the squad but Thomas is definitely the best player in our team,'' the 20-year-old said. ``He's very creative and when he's on the ball he's unbelievable.

"He sees things that not many people see and that's a big plus.

"If we don't have him we'll figure it out; we should be right but he's a big bonus.''

While the Wanderers hold a 3-0 record over Brisbane this season and are the hottest team in the competition after sweeping to the premiership in their maiden year, the Roar are back-to-back champions who boast a faultless finals record in the past three seasons.

Brattan said that gave the visitors an edge against the fledgling club.

"Definitely. We're experienced in that and it's a one-off game and anything can happen.

"I think on our day we can beat anyone and we've shown that in the last couple of weeks that we're back to our best and taking momentum into the finals.''

Broich agreed the Roar would be far better tuned to turning the tables at a capacity Parramatta Stadium.

"It's not going to be easy but we're peaking at the right time,'' he said.

"It's an even contest now.''

In a gripping encounter the home side didn't hit the front until the 66th minute, with man of the match and halfback Cooper Cronk orchestrating a brilliant final 20 minutes.

After a try by Cronk they sealed the victory, which was a club record 13th in succession, with six minutes remaining with some individual brilliance by premiership winger Sisa Waqa in his first game of the season after a hand injury.

Little went right for most of the match for the home side, who looked shell-shocked as they were out-enthused and out-played across the park.

Melbourne's usual weapons - their kicking game and their defence - let them down while their attack was uncharacteristically sloppy with credit due to the Tigers' punishing defence.

The teams went to the sheds at halftime locked at 6-6, with Tigers winger James Tedesco opening the scoring in the 18th minute.

The Storm answered through forward Siosaia Vave, who crashed over just two minutes before the break.

While the home side would have copped a spray from coach Craig Bellamy, it was the visitors who came out firing in the second half.

They dominated possession with four repeat sets before Robbie Farah put up a bomb that was taken by Ben Murdoch-Masila, who managed to get a one-handed pass away to Benji Marshall.

That gave them a 12-6 lead and it looked like an upset was on the cards.

But the undefeated Storm showed why they are top of the competition ladder as they started to build some momentum while the Tigers ran out of steam.

The penalty count blew out against the visitors, giving Melbourne even more ball with the pressure finally telling on the Tigers.

Winger Mahe Fonua scored a well-deserved try off a Billy Slater rocket pass in the corner in the 62nd minute and skipper Cameron Smith levelled at 12-12.

Just minutes later Smith sent the ball on to Cronk, who found Chambers who broke through a tackle by Tedesco and after running downfield, passed back inside to the game's leading No.7.

The Tigers' experiment with Braith Anasta at halfback gave the team more shape, particularly with Benji Marshall troubled with a toe injury for much of the game.

Injuries sour Roar's win over Reds

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 07 April 2013 | 18.48

Stunning strike ... Luke Brattan is swamped by Roar teammates. Source: David Mariuz / AAP

Brisbane Roar could lose three key players to injury because of a short turnaround for their A-League semi-final against Western Sydney Wanderers.

But Roar coach Mike Mulvey refused to criticise the scheduling of the semi-final, despite conceding it could cost him players.

The defending champion Roar ended Adelaide United's season with an ominous 2-1 away triumph in Sunday's elimination final.

But influential midfielder Thomas Broich, goalscorer Luke Brattan and defender Jack Hingert all suffered game-ending injuries in the Hindmarsh Stadium victory.

The trio face a race against time to overcome their ailments for a Friday night semi-final against the Wanderers.

The other semi-final between Central Coast and Melbourne Victory will be played on Sunday.

Mulvey said the day's difference between the semi-finals could prove decisive for the chances of his injured players fronting against the Wanderers.

"In those cases, it might have helped,'' Mulvey said of an extra day's rest.

"But from a playing perspective ... I have got no problems in terms of fitness, the mental state, the preparation, the style of things. We will have no problems being ready for Friday night.

"It's just on those particular injuries that a day (extra) might have helped.''

Broich suffered a corked achilles tendon and was substituted at halftime.

Hingert limped off as his right ankle swelled "like a balloon'', Mulvey said. "The game might come too quickly for him on Friday,'' he said.

And Brattan, who drove the first nail in Adelaide's coffin with a long-range goal in the 27th minute, limped off late after suffering a knock to his calf.

Brattan's strike was followed by a goal from industrious midfielder Ivan Franjic just before half-time.

Adelaide, outplayed and outclassed, never threatened until an 89th minute goal from Dario Vidosic raised false hopes of an escape.

"We conceded two goals that shouldn't happen in finals,'' dejected Adelaide caretaker coach Michael Valkanis said.

Valkanis refused to publicly comment on whether he would now apply for the permanent coaching job at Adelaide for next season.

But with two wins from 10 games since being appointed interim coach when John Kosmina quit, Valkanis appears at long odds to be the next full-time coach of the Reds.

Hawthorn, coming off a six-day break and playing in 32 degree heat, looked vulnerable when West Coast closed the margin to 19 points at the final change.

But the Hawks flexed their muscle when it mattered most, slamming home eight goals to three in the last quarter to cruise to the 23.10 (148) to 15.8 (98) victory.

Franklin booted five goals and Rioli finished with four, while Luke Breust (four goals), Grant Birchall, Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell were also key contributors.

Hawthorn skipper Hodge, in his first match of the season, tallied 25 disposals in defence and played out the entire match.

The Eagles were well served by Josh Kennedy (five goals) and midfielders Chris Masten and Matt Priddis.

But with ruckman Nic Naitanui, forward Mark LeCras, Sharrod Wellingham and Matt Rosa still sidelined, the Eagles look a shadow of the team that started the season as genuine premiership fancies.

West Coast are now 0-2, but should notch their first win of the season next week when they take on struggling Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday.

The Eagles were shellshocked early as Hawthorn raced out to a 39-point lead in the second quarter.

Big guns Rioli, Franklin and Jarryd Roughead were all prominent in front of goal, but it was West Coast's lack of pressure through the midfield that handed the ascendancy to the visitors.

It took until midway through the second quarter for West Coast to finally hit their straps, and they made the most of the momentum switch to slam on four unanswered goals within the space of five minutes.

Kennedy and Jack Darling were influential during the onslaught as Hawthorn's lead was whittled down to 14 points, but late goals to Breust and Roughead eased the pressure on the visitors.

Hawthorn were back in the box seat after kicking the opening two goals of the third quarter.

But once again West Coast fought back, closing to 19 points at the final change.

Hawthorn coughed up a 30-point lead in their loss to Geelong on Monday, but they dug deep to ensure history wouldn't repeat.

West Coast should have finished the stronger in the final term given they had 15 days to prepare for the match, but it was Hawthorn who powered home to notch their first win of the year.

Raiders revival steals victory

Jarrod Crocker ... seals victory for Canberra v Sydney Roosters. Source: Phil Hillyard / News Limited

The Raiders fought back from a 16-0 halftime deficit to record the biggest NRL comeback in 2013.

The round five loss ended a three game winning streak for the Roosters.

Raiders captain David Shillington was inspirational for the home team, making 144 metres in attack and forcing several turnovers with his confrontational defence.

The Raiders' handling skills began well below par once again, completing less than 50 per cent of their sets in the first half and leaving many of the 10,669 spectators less than impressed.

Their errors allowed the Roosters to race away to a 16-0 lead through tries to James Maloney, Michael Oldfield and Mitchell Aubusson.

The Roosters were just 35 minutes away from becoming the second team in rugby league history to win three consecutive games without conceding a point, when Croker sparked the comeback by throwing a flick pass to unmarked winger Edrick Lee.

The then Raiders grew another leg and earned back-to-back sets before halfback Sam Williams threw a dummy and wriggled his way over the line for the Raiders second try and an 18-12 deficit after 68m.

It took some magic from Roosters second-rower Sonny Bill Williams to stem the flow, splitting the Raiders defence before throwing a no-look pass to Anthony Minichiello who scooped the ball off his toes and dived over for the 55th minute try as the Roosters extended their lead to 22-12.

But the Raiders hit back again with just 15 minutes on the clock, Sandor Earl leaping above two Rooster defenders to snatch a Sam Williams crossfield kick to bring it back to a four point ball game.

Sustained pressure from the Raiders then saw Lee return the favour to Croker with a great no-look pass, giving the Raiders a memorable win.

Talking points ... week 1 of the A-League finals didn't disappoint. Source:News Limited

The first weekend of the new-look sudden death A-League finals series lived up to expectations, with a drama-charged Victory-Glory clash before the champions proved they aren't giving up their crown without a fight.

Friday April 12

Western Sydney Wanderers v Brisbane Roar

Parramatta Stadium, 7.30pm

Sunday April 14

Central Coast Mariners v Melbourne Victory

Bluetongue Stadium, 5pm

Winners to play in the grand final

A-League finals are just packed with drama and talking points and Friday night's clash between Victory and Glory was no exception.

"I thought the Melbourne Victory penalty wasn't a penalty and I didn't think it was a hand ball either," Mark Bosnich said on Sunday Shootout.

"But … once you put your hands on a player in the penalty box, you leave it up to the referee to make that all.

"For me, no penalty ... but defender … when someone's got their back to goal, put your hands out to the side. He's not going anywhere."

As for Steve Pantelidis's red-card, Bosnich added: "I don't think Jarred Gillett had to send him off. How do you expect him (Pantelidis) to react in a massive game when he's just received a decision he doesn't like.

"He is going to be fuming because he doesn't think it's a penalty. I'm very, very disappointed about that."

Socceroos skipper Lucas Neill, a guest on the show, said: "every now and then you wish they'd take an extra second or two to control themselves and ... realise how much it influences the game".

The last-gasp drama has dominated the analysis, but Victory were strangely subdued for a long period of the game - a lot to do with Alistair Edward's well organised, determined and sharp Glory outfit.

Connor Pain, Archie Thompson and Marco Rojas were well contained for the most part, as Victory couldn't conjure their swashbuckling width or movement.

Glory, meanwhile, were clever, marshalled expertly by Jacob Burns and Liam Miller.

They punctuated Victory's rhythm and as the home side tried to rouse themselves for a comeback, the stop-start nature of the game did not suit them at all.

But when it comes to finals football we can start to call Ange Postecoglou "Sir Alex" for the way his Victory and Roar teams never give up at the final stages.

Sure, it should have been all over when Smeltz, one of the A-League's great marksman, rattled the bar from the penalty spot.

"I made a schoolboy error I think, in just as I was about to take the penalty, something caught my concentration to the left," Smeltz admitted after the match.

But you sensed there was more to come at Etihad Stadium.

And so another A-League final came to the party; Gillett falls further down Jacob Burns's Christmas card list and Mark Milligan gets his chance to show his mettle with the season on the line.

Marcos Flores added a new dimension and it's fitting that vintage Victory prized Glory open when the game was on the line. Thompson resumed his role on the left and it was the Argentine, with the ball in his own half, who unleashed Rojas, before the fleet-footed Kiwi laid it on a tee for Thompson to prod home.

"I thought that game was over but when they missed that penalty there was always an opportunity for us to score," Thompson said.

"You see how (Victory coach) Ange (Postecoglou) has won his grand finals the last two years, in extra time or with a minute to go.

"The goal was one of the highlights of my career. We were pretty much down and out and to come back like we did was amazing."

And don't tell the coach, on the cusp of a third-straight grand final, that Victory were lucky.

"You saw out there at the end of that game, 22 players were absolutely spent. To get a win in that kind of scenario, it's never lucky," Ange Postecoglou said.

"Finals always end up being tense, tight affairs, and that's what makes them so special and so hard to win.

"To win a finals game, every player out there, regardless of how they're feeling, are going to give every ounce of energy and more.

"It was a ridiculous finish, but I've been involved with those before.

"In finals games, the most important thing is that you've got your nose in front at the final whistle - whichever way you can. And we got our nose in front."

As for Glory, they're left thinking what might have been for a second season in a row.

"I think last year I held my tongue when decisions went the wrong way that were clearly wrong," skipper Jacob Burns said.

"But this time I honestly don't understand how a referee like Jarred Gillett gets our game again and how he can make such poor judgment once again."

Not only a great escape by Postecoglou's side – but by Rojas, too, as Thompson wielded the corner flag in celebration!

Get set. The champions are taking on the champions-elect for the right to play in the grand final.

Brisbane came out of the blocks looking every bit the 'dark horses' that they've been anointed ahead of this finals series and the home side were left behind at Hindmarsh Stadium.

"The way they played in the first-half I haven't seen them play as well all year," Bosnich said.

"Any team will be fearful of meeting them.

"They were outstanding in the first-half. Absolutely on fire."

The signs of the Roar in form where there early: Thomas Broich slipping into the left channel, Shane Steffanuto overlapping, before drilling the ball for Besart Berisha, probing in the box.

Roar were fluid, a rejuvenated Mitch Nichols added plenty of punch and Steve Lustica had a controlling influence over proceedings.

"That's probably the best we've played this season – first-half," Mulvey told Fox Sports after the match.

"We've got momentum … it's really important at this time of year. You can't just flick it on and off We came out with belief and focus. The quality was there for all to see."

And it was a night Cassio will not remember fondly.

After Brisbane's brilliantly-executed corner - Broich floating it for Luke Brattan to confidently volley on goal - the Brazilian fluffed a clearance to swing the ball into the net. He was then beaten to the punch by Ivan Franjic just before half-time off a pin-point ball from Mitch Nichols from the left flank.

"(It's a) big difference when Mitch Nichols plays … they look a far more creative unit … in finals football, you're not going to win anything by going out to keep a clean sheet.

"You've got to create chances."

Adelaide certainly came out flying in the second term but it wasn't until Dario Vidosic's first-goal from open-play this term that Adelaide breathed belated, frantic life into the game.

The way these A-League finals swing and turn it wouldn't have even surprised to see Eugene Galekovic prod home a late equaliser for the home side.

But the final flurry came after the game looked like petering out. Mike Mulvey will be furious with Ben Halloran, Mitch Nichols and Stefan Nijland's lax approach in the final third over the final 15 minutes of the match.

It's a short turn-around for the Roar and they'll be sweating on Broich's fitness. He picked up an Achilles knock and couldn't feature in the second-half. Luke Brattan (calf) also hobbled off, while Jack Hingert is in grave doubt with an ankle injury.

In the end, it was about momentum.  Adelaide had none at all.  Brisbane have it.

"(Wanderers-Brisbane) could go to penalties, Neil said. Maybe Brisbane. They've got the momentum," Neil said.
