Classy custodian ... Brett Stewart is Mark Gasnier's Gaz Man for round five. Source: Grant Trouville / News Limited
Former St George Illawarra superstar Mark Gasnier looks back on the fifth round of NRL action in 2013 and singles out his player of the week to be awarded The Gaz Man.
And the award, for his starring role in the Sea Eagles' big win over Canterbury-Bankstown, goes to...
BRETT STEWART
His attacking ability is always at the forefront of the game but I think his defence was outstanding. Billy Slater has set the bar for fullbacks in defence. Slater and Brett Stewart are amazing at stopping teams that get in behind.
There was one time against Canterbury-Bankstown that Matai was caught out and Stewart plugged that hole and stopped the Dogs having an overlap.
He is always going to be a try sniffer, he's always going to make linebreaks and get on the end of offloads, but I think his defence has really come on in leaps and bounds.
He is such a big part of why Manly have conceded so few points in the first five rounds.
He is what Billy Slater is to Melbourne. Manly would still create a lot without him, but they wouldn't finish as many.
His kick-chase is a real feature and he's ball-playing is getting better too.
Snake's still really developing his game. He's really pushing boundaries as to what he can contribute to the Sea Eagles.
