Jockey injured in horrific fall

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 22 Desember 2012 | 18.48

Shock ... Ryan Maloney lies on the track after the fall. Source: News Limited

Jockey Ryan Maloney suffered a broken wrist but fortunately escaped major injuries after victory turned to tragedy in the Red Tempo Handicap (1000m) at Flemington.

Maloney steered Beltrois, who has not raced for 13 months, through gaps to a narrow win, only for the seven year old to knuckle three strides after the winning post, tumble and crash to turf.

Beltriois hobbled to the top of the straight but had to be euthanised.

Maloney was taken to hospital complaining of a sore left wrist.

The incident sucked the air from the pre-Christmas meeting. The glee associated with the return of Beltrois dissipated as stunned patrons watched the drama unfold.

Nervy Jets hold out Sydney

Ankle tap ... Ruben Zadkovich is tripped up by Ali Abbas Source: AAP

Newcastle picked up their first win for six weeks and extended Sydney FC's horror run to one win in eight matches with a nervy 2-1 win at Hunter Stadium.

Early goals from Craig Goodwin and Emile Heskey proved decisive, even though Yairo Yau gave the visitors a glimmer of hope after 32 minutes.

It was a far from dominant display from the home team who had not scored since knocking three past Melbourne Heart goalkeeper Clint Bolton on November 24.

The home side dominated the early exchanges and were rewarded with Goodwin's free kick and Heskey's tap in.

But Sydney eventually found their rhythm and pulled a goal back through the speedy Yau.

Sydney pressed in the second half but couldn't find the decisive touch in front of goal.

When the two sides met in their much-hyped round-two encounter, the Jets produced a thrilling 3-2 win in an entertaining clash in which both marquee men Heskey and Sydney star Alessandro Del Piero scored.

But while Heskey was a force this time, Del Piero barely featured.

There were seven fouls in the first 10 minutes in what was a heated clash.

Fabio conceded a foul for charging James Virgili just outside the penalty area and would come to regret it moments later when Goodwin scored from the ensuing free-kick.

Goodwin curled the ball into the net from an acute angle about four metres out to put the hosts up after 13 minutes and score the Jets' first goal since round eight.

The goal seemed to spark the Jets into life with Virgili making a defence-busting run down the right and forcing a save from Sydney gloveman Vedran Janjetovic.

Virgili worked his way into the box again, this time setting up Heskey who put the Jets two up with his sixth goal of the season, sending the 17,402 Newcastle faithful into raptures.

To keep the game alive, Sydney struck back minutes later with Panamanian international Yau forcing a save from goalkeeper Mark Birighitti.

But Birighitti, in his first match back from a five-week injury lay-off, couldn't contain the ball with Yau slotting the rebound into the back of the net.

Brilliante had Sky Blues' goalkeeper Janjetovic at full stretch just before half-time with a powerful long-range strike that just shaved the post.

Sydney returned from the break looking to equalise with Rhyan Grant threatening with a strike.

The Jets replied moments later when Ryan Griffiths was able to get on the end of a Goodwin cross with Janjetovic diving to save the header.

Del Piero played a superb ball to Yau in the dying minutes but the striker sent his shot just over the crossbar.

A furious Frank Farina warned his Sydney players to either shape up or ship out.

"When you have to rely on a 38-year-old player (Del Piero) who's just come back from a hamstring injury it's a bit of a worry,'' Farina said.

"We got what we deserved today and we didn't deserve to win.''

Despite an ill Brett Emerton getting subbed off after 30 minutes and missing injured pair Pascal Bosschaart and Jason Culina, Farina was making no excuses saying the side should have the depth to cope.

"There will be a lot of nervous players after that,'' he said.

"They won't like me when I get angry.

"I'm a fighter and I'll go down swinging in terms of the fight to make it off the bottom and I expect the players that will be with me will have that same attitude.

"If they don't, they won't play.''

Gary van Egmond by contrast was full of praise for the Jets, saying it was just the result they needed to get their season back on track.

"Tonight I thought we had two full-backs who had real intent getting past people, we had midfielders who really wanted to work, we had wide players who wanted to take people on, and strikers who wanted to win their duels and score,'' van Egmond said.

Thompson late-show lifts Victory

Revenge ... Archie Thompson scores the match-winner. Source: Salpigtidis George / News Limited

Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson scores the winner deep in injury-time to secure a pulsating 2-1 derby triumph over crosstown rivals Melbourne Heart at AAMI Park.

Thompson netted via the crossbar two minutes into injury time to snatch all three points and sink the Heart, who grabbed an equaliser just minutes earlier.

The win lifts the Victory to third place and leaves the Heart third from bottom.

The Victory took the lead with Marco Rojas' 67th-minute goal - a wonderfully-worked move sweeping through Thompson, Gui Finkler and Mark Milligan before the New Zealander finished sweetly.

But the Heart looked to have earned a share of the points when skipper Fred, who missed his side's two best chances of the match earlier, leapt high to meet a superb Michael Marrone cross and finish.

Then the Heart lost possession in the middle of the park in injury time.

Relive the frantic Melbourne derby in our Match Centre

Rojas grabbed the ball and sent a sublime pass to Thompson, whose shot hit the crossbar and crept just inside before Heart defender Aziz Behich thumped it out in vain.

With more than 26,000 watching on, it was a first half of desperate defence - four shots blocked, cleared off the line or deflected to safety in a spirited opening 45 minutes.

Fred had the Heart's two best chances, squandering a first-half opportunity on 32 minutes when he shot dreadfully from Behich's superb run to the byline and cross.

But he went within a coat of paint of a spectacular goal six minutes after halftime, controlling then thumping a wonderful long-range volley just wide of the top corner.

Super Cooper gets Renegades home

Late heroics ... Tom Cooper whacks two big sixes to help get the Renegades home. Source: News Limited

Expensive late overs from Brisbane Heat's import pacemen Kemar Roach and Thisara Perera allowed the unbeaten Melbourne Renegades to surge to another Big Bash League win at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

Set a modest victory target of 134, the Renegades were struggling badly at 3-88 from 16 overs, needing 46 from their final four overs.

They notched their fourth win from as many games with five balls to spare and six wickets in hand, after some big hitting from South Australia's Tom Cooper (29 from 15 balls) and NSW's Ben Rohrer (30 not out off 25) steered them home.

The home side were struggling to find boundaries until Cooper swung the game by helping them take 14 off the 17th over, bowled by Perera.

He opened the next over, bowled by Roach, with a huge swipe for six over square leg.

While Cooper was out lbw next ball, Rohrer took up the slack, smashing another six later in the over as Roach gave up 18 runs for the over.

Rohrer and new batsman Will Sheridan took 13 more runs off the next Perera over before Rohrer smacked Roach for four to win the game off the first ball of the last, making it 49 runs off the last 19 balls of the match.

Rohrer said the Renegades always felt they could launch a late charge with wickets in hand, but it was getting tight.

"Once it gets over 12 (runs an over), it gets pretty tough, so it was getting to the point where we knew we had to go and Tommy hit some big bombs and the rest is history," Rohrer said.

Earlier, Heat all-rounder Ben Cutting, who missed all of the first BBL season through injury, staged a fine rescue effort with bat and ball to put his side in the game.

Re-live all the action and check out the key numbers with our Match Centre.

Coming in with his side 6-80 in the 13th over - after losing three wickets in five balls - he belted an unbeaten 33 from 24 balls to help them to a semi-respectable score.

Cutting then took 2-12 from four overs with the ball to put the Renegades on the back foot, before West Indian Roach and Sri Lankan Perera let the game slip.

NRL approves Sonny Bill deal

Sonny Bill ... is finally a signed and sealed Roosters player. Source: Adam Taylor / News Limited

The wait is finally over for Sonny Bill Williams, with the ARLC informing the Sydney Roosters that the code-hopping superstar's 2013 playing contract has been registered.

After signing a one-year deal with the Roosters on November 13, it's been a drawn out process for salary cap auditor Ian Schubert to approve the deal.

The dual-international is pursuing a boxing career on the side and has a fight against South African Francois Botha scheduled in February.

Williams represented the All Blacks this year before enjoying a stint in Japanese rugby, and there's every chance he will switch back to the 15-a-side code after his commitments with the Roosters are finished in 2013.

At his welcoming press conference with the Roosters back in November, Williams seemed nonplussed about returning to league, making it clear he was only doing so to honour a handshake promise to the club's chairman Nick Politis.

There were some concerns Williams would walk out on his Roosters deal if the NRL didn't register the contract quickly.

Interim chief executive Shane Mattiske said signing off on the deal was a complex procedure.

"By the nature of Sonny Bill's other sporting commitments there have clearly been some unusual circumstances around the contract including his direct negotiation of the contract through a legal representative," said Mattiske.

"It has been the salary cap auditor's absolute responsibility to review all aspects of the payments in the contract and the negotiations leading up to the contract.

"Ian Schubert has done exactly what he is required to do throughout this process and his task has been made more challenging by deficiencies in the Roosters' documentation of the negotiations, which did not fully comply with the NRL's player contract and remuneration rules."

Mattiske said the Roosters can expect a fine in the new year for failing to put all their cards on the table.

The Roosters failed to follow regulations in recording and supplying information to the ARLC, Mattiske said.

Schubert had to seek advice from a solicitor in rubber stamping the deal and Mattiske said the ARLC would also keep a close eye on Williams commercial agreements.

"There are a number of assurances on the part of the club and in relation to Sonny Bill's commercial agreements that are being relied upon in this process and that will be monitored," he said.

"Given the unusual features of this contract it was necessary for Ian to engage a solicitor to assist with the investigation which included interviews of a number of persons and a consideration of various documents.

"Ultimately, a report of the investigation was furnished to the Commission along with advice from Senior Counsel.

"The Commission has also determined that the club should face a sanction ... the amount of this breach will be assessed following a recommendation in the new-year."

Western Sydney record the most impressive win of their short A-League existence, breaking the shackles and handing Adelaide United a 6-1 thrashing at Parramatta Stadium.

After 11 weeks of grinding triumphs, low-scoring draws and little more, the Wanderers bang in three goals before halftime to seal their third victory on the trot.

Striker Mark Bridge, sidelined from the side's past two wins, slotted a hat-trick including a cracking effort in the second half that curled into the top right corner.

To put the rout into perspective, the expansion franchise have only scored a total of eight goals and it was the first time they tallied more than two goals in a game.

8 Heart 11 3 3 5 -2 12
9 Brisbane 11 3 2 6 0 11
10 Sydney 11 3 1 7 -11 10

Rather than go into their shell and protect the lead after the break, Western Sydney proceeded to embarrass Adelaide, a side also renowned for their defence that trailed league-leading Central Coast by one point at the start of round 12.

See all seven goals and Mark Bridge's historic hat-trick at our Match Centre

Japanese star Shinji Ono, who helped create two of his side's first-half goals, found the back of the net from a sharp chance in the 52nd minute before Bridge completed his hat-trick four minutes later.

More goals looked on the cards for the next 10 minutes as Reds goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic worked overtime to halt the red-and-black blitzkrieg.

The visitors struggled to complete basic passes in defence under the immense pressure of the Wanderers, who were dismissed as likely wooden spooners at the start of the season after their rushed entry to the league.

However, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic ended the carnage soon after when he brought off Ono and Dino Kresinger in the space of five minutes.

Fox Sports football commentator Mel McLaughlin previews round 12

Ono and Kresinger combined beautifully for the Wanderers, typified by the latter's goal in first-half stoppage time after an Ono one-two put him through.

The pace of Dutchman Youssouf Hersi was also pivotal in the thumping, having released the pair and Bridge on countless occasions.

With Western Sydney minus their two most potent attackers, the spark went out of the game and Adelaide attacking midfielder Dario Vidosic slipped past the hosts' imperious defence and found the back of the net in the 68th minute.

As cheers of 'we want six' rang out around the crowd of 9,056, substitute Joseph Gibbs brought them to their feet in the 90th minute when he fired truly.

The only sour point for Popovic, whose charges climbed to third on the ladder to trail the Reds by only six points, was a leg injury to defender Adam D'apuzzo who was taken off prematurely in the 35th minute.

Malinga, Maxwell lead Stars to win

X-factor ... Glenn Maxwell smashed the ball to all parts of the MCG. Source: Wayne Ludbey / News Limited

Melbourne Stars glamour pair Shane Warne and Lasith Malinga made a difficult Sydney Sixers run-chase impossible as the home side notched a third-straight KFC T20 Big Bash League win at the MCG on Friday night.

Stars batsmen Glenn Maxwell (82 off 50 balls) and Brad Hodge (51 off 33) set up the 21-run victory by blasting the first century stand of the BBL season to propel their side to 6-177.

Malinga (1-18 off four overs) and Warne (2-32 off four) then delivered the knock-out blows in front of a crowd of 14,260.

Sri Lankan speedster Malinga, who earlier in the series took record figures of 6-7, again proved himself the competition's most difficult bowler to handle, with Sixers captain Brad Haddin in no doubt he was the difference.

"He showed why he's No.1 in the world tonight," Haddin said.

"I thought we could chase that total on that wicket but he was just too good in the end."

Warne said it was nice to bowl well at a crucial time himself, but he acknowledged Malinga was the key.

"He's got to be the best,'' Warne said.

"It would be nice if he could bowl eight or nine overs.

"He's great to have in our group.

"His execution to do what he does, he puts a shoe down on the wicket when he practises and hits it eight or nine times out of 10."

With the Sixers needing to score heavily, Malinga conceded just two runs off his first over and three off his second, which sent the required run-rate sky-rocketing.

Warne helped build the pressure. He conceded just three runs off the 14th over of the innings and then just seven off the 16th, while taking the wicket of Moises Henriques.

When Malinga returned for the 17th over, his third, and bowled danger man Haddin (39 off 28 balls), the Sixers' hopes were pretty much over.

Earlier, sloppy Sixers fielding gave Maxwell and Hodge lives early in their innings, which proved extremely costly as they put on a 118-run stand in just 11.3 overs.

The reigning champion Sixers now have one win and two losses while the Stars climbed to 3-1.

The Ultimate Fighter reality TV series competitor suffered an injury that will make men around the world cringe, when he mangled his manhood during a lovemaking session while holidaying in Malaysia.

Elbe suffered a "fracture and slight tear in the urinary tube" after accidentally launching his girlfriend more than 20cm in the air and misjudging the landing.

His five-day hospital stay set him back more than $6000, and now he is open to selling the gory pics in a bid to recoup some cash, according to TMZ.

It was unclear whether Elbe had been able to find a buyer, but it is believed he is chasing somewhere in the vicinity of $2000.

While he is expected to make a full recovery, Elbe said on his blog that it was hard to move around and he would be "out of action without a steady paycheck for probably the next 8 weeks".

"Walking is difficult (picture walking your dog with the collar on his miniman) - but I've been given another week worth of pain pills, antibiotics, and antiinflammatories," he wrote.

Elbe said everyone in the hospital was so fascinated by his injury that he had a constant stream of visitors stopping by for a look.

Roar players at fault too: Smith

Taking responsibility ... Matt Smith says the players are to blame. Source: A Armstrong / News Limited

Brisbane captain Matt Smith believes the Roar's players must take some responsibility for the A-League club's current plight.

The defending champions are ninth in the 10-team competition after 11 matches with just three wins so far this season, their poor form resulting in Rado Vidosic being moved out of the head coach's role on Tuesday.

Vidosic has been shuffled into a technical director's role at the club with Mike Mulvey stepping into the coach's chair ahead of Friday night's grand final rematch against Perth at Suncorp Stadium.

Central defender Smith, who debuted for Australia in the successful East Asian Cup qualifying campaign in Hong Kong recently, is hopeful the shake-up will spark the Roar's ailing campaign.

"It came as a bit of a shock," Smith said of Tuesday's developments.

"The players need to be a bit responsible as well but there's no point looking back, it's all about looking forward.

"Mike's come in and he's been very enthusiastic and motivated. He's certainly driven and that's going to be portrayed within the playing group.

"Hopefully between ourselves, the coaching staff and the club we can be pushing there come the end of the season."

The clash with the Glory is the second meeting between the sides since the Roar's controversial grand final win and will be Perth's first trip back to Brisbane since Besart Berisha's penalty broke their hearts in April.

The Albanian marksman is unlikely to play according to Mulvey after injuring his shoulder against the Melbourne Victory last weekend but the former Queensland Academy of Sport head coach says the rivalry between the two clubs is secondary to getting results at this time.

"It's just the next game," Mulvey said.

"It's history, a very positive part of the Brisbane Roar's history, but tomorrow night is about us finding our mojo again."

The Glory have had their own struggles this week after being forced to deny rumours their offices had been raided by the Australian Federal Police as part of an investigation involving owner Tony Sage.

The club says their premises were not among those entered by authorities and the investigation has nothing to do with the Glory's affairs.

On the field, the Glory will be keen to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season after their 3-0 victory over Newcastle last weekend.

They welcome young Japanese star Ryo Nagai back from injury for their trip to Brisbane.
Friday's match begins at 9pm (EDT).

Cowan signs for County stint

Australian opener Ed Cowan will prepare for the upcoming Ashes series in England with a spell at Nottinghamshire.

The 30-year-old will be available to Nottinghamshire until June 21, with his stay covering seven County Championship games and eight one-day fixtures.

Cowan, who has partnered David Warner at the top of Australia's batting line-up over the last 12 months, will be able to get used to the wicket at Trent Bridge, which hosts the opening Ashes Test beginning on July 10.

"I was very keen to play some division one cricket and I'm pleased to have the opportunity to do that with Nottinghamshire," Cowan said.

"There are a lot of good players at the club and Trent Bridge is a great venue so I'm hoping to make a good contribution on and off the field."

Cowan averages 34 across 11 Tests, with 136 against South Africa last month his best score to date.

In the process, the Strikers became the first team this season to win a match when batting first.

With Michael Klinger top-scoring with 60, the Strikers made an imposing total of 6-177 after being sent in to bat by Thunder skipper Chris Rogers.

And the bottom side were never in the hunt, being bowled out for 126 in the penultimate over.

Former Test speedster Shaun Tait made a welcome return to Strikers line-up for the first time this season, generating good pace in taking 3-22 off three overs.

The Thunder's listless start to their innings was epitomised by Chris Gayle's uncharacteristically slow 8 from 19 balls.

Only a seventh-wicket partnership of 51 between Ryan Carters and Scott Coyte saved the Thunder from more embarrassment after they crashed to 6-64.

Sydney were eventually dismissed for 126 in the 19th over, with Coyte top-scoring with a breezy 33, including two sixes.

Earlier, Adelaide built a highly competitive score based on a strong opening partnership of 81 between Klinger and Tim Ludeman. Klinger top-scored with 60 off 46 balls.

Fellow opener Ludeman struck 46 off 39 balls, while Nathan Reardon smashed 42 off just 20 deliveries.

Despite the run-fest, Thunder paceman Dirk Nannes impressed to take 4-17 off his allotted four overs.

I'm glad we lost, says Sixers' Lee

One step backward ... Brett Lee sees the silver lining in their shock loss to the Scorchers. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

Paceman Brett Lee believes a rare loss was just the reality check the Sydney Sixers needed early in their Big Bash League title defence.

The Sixers had a 12-game unbeaten streak snapped in a heavy loss to the previously winless Perth Scorchers on Sunday. It was Sydney's first Twenty20 failure since January.

The defeat has left the side looking a little vulnerable heading into Friday's clash with the Melbourne Stars at the MCG but Lee believes the effects of the loss will be more positive than negative.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

''The thing about the other night is I'm actually glad it's happened now,'' Lee said on Wednesday.

''Sometimes you can take some constructive criticism when you lose and you read in the media that we've had a shocking game, which we did.

''We weren't on with bat and ball, field, the whole thing, but I would rather that happened now than in the semis and the finals.''

The Sixers entered the Big Bash League season as reigning champions and Champions League Twenty20 titleholders but Lee hoped the hype around the side would now die down.

''I guess the great thing for us is we were 12 games on the trot and the media were talking about 14-15 games in a row,'' Lee said.

''We had that extra pressure on us to keep going through undefeated.

''But that's done and dusted now, we won't hear any more about that, which is great.

''We can really focus and concentrate on ways to improve.''

Lee was confident the Sixers would bounce back strongly against the Stars, and was looking forward to a showdown with former Test teammate Shane Warne.

Sydney will again be missing Test players David Warner and Mitchell Starc but Lee tipped West Indian spinner Sunil Narine to have a big impact in his second match for the club.

Narine had figures of 0-16 from four overs in the loss to the Scorchers.

''I thought he bowled very well without luck. He bowled beautifully,'' Lee said.

''He's going to play a huge role for us in the game and as the series go on.''

Renegades grab third-straight win

Impressive ... Nathan Rimmington took three wickets on Wednesday night.

Melbourne Renegades captain Aaron Finch has been denied a certain six by the Etihad Stadium roof while leading his side to a crushing KFC T20 Big Bash League win over Hobart Hurricanes.

Chasing a measly 103 to win, the top-placed Hurricanes reached their target in 13.2 overs with seven wickets in hand to remain unbeaten after three games.

Finch, the competition's top-scorer this season, finished unbeaten on 46 to top his side's scoring for a third straight game.

He has scored 188 from three innings and been out only once.

But he should have six more.

In the third over of the Renegades' innings, Finch launched a mighty hit over the legside, off Hobart quick Doug Bollinger.

Click on the video at the top of the page to see the controversial moment when Finch hit the roof.

It cleared the boundary before striking a roof beam about 25m high, which stopped the ball from most likely landing in the top tier of the grandstand.

The umpires conferred before deeming it a dead ball and a scoreless delivery followed.

The roof has been hit only once before, by Mike Hussey in 2005 in a one-day international against an ICC World XI.

The Hurricanes' loss left them with one win from three games.

They would have been disappointed with their batting performance, with wickets falling frequently throughout their innings of 9-102.

Retired Australia great Ricky Ponting (25 from 25 balls) top-scored before being bowled by Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan attempting a reverse sweep.

Murali took 2-16 from his four overs, with West Indian off-spinning allrounder Marlon Samuels (3-22) and seamer Nathan Rimmington (3-18) also among the wickets.

"I realised straight away when it bounced back," he said.

"We'd been talking about it today actually, that if it hits the roof it's a dead ball, we knew that."

But opposing skipper George Bailey said common sense decreed it should have been six.

"I think particularly that beam that's just above us (that Finch hit), it's over the rope already, so it's probably a six with common sense," Bailey said.

"But having said that, if it hits the roof genuine you're probably going to be caught out so it probably goes both ways for the batters.

Video: is it a six or a dead ball?

'It went there' ... George Bailey shows the umpires where the ball really went. Source: Hamish Blair / News Limited

One of the biggest shots seen in this year's KFC T20 Big Bash League was hit by Aaron Finch on Wednesday night.

The only problem was, it counted for nothing.

Finch's massive stroke over mid-wicket off the bowling of Hobart Hurricanes quick Doug Bollinger was sailing towards the top-tier of Etihad Stadium when it struck a horizontal pylon hanging from the roof.

Video and still footage appears to show that the pylon is just about in line with the boundary rope, but that didn't stop the umpires from calling a dead-ball, meaning Finch didn't get any runs for the massive shot and the ball had to be rebowled.

It didn't seem to bother the Melbourne Renegades skipper too much, as he went on to top-score for his side and lead them to their third-straight win, downing the Hurricanes by seven wickets.

After the game, Finch said he was happy for the rules to stay as they are.

"It's good that it's one way or the other," he said.

"There's no 'Was it over the line or wasn't it?'

"It's good that they're consistent with the rule."

The top-scorer for Hobart, Ricky Ponting, also provided some spectacular vision for those at the game and fans watching on Fox Sports, but for completely different reasons.

The former Australia captain had just hit a towering six over cover when he went for an audacious reverse sweep against none other than legendary spinner Muttiah Muralidaran.

Unfortunately for Ponting, he missed the ball completely and was clean bowled.

ARLC announces major rule changes

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 18 Desember 2012 | 18.48

Controversy ... Greg Inglis has been involved in several rule debates. Source: Wayne Ludbey / News Limited

The Australian Rugby League Commission has scrapped the controversial benefit of the doubt system after a season of clangers and dramatically overhauled the decision-making process for awarding tries.

In a dramatic day at Rugby League Central, the commission also announced new State of Origin eligibility rules and a clarification of what will constitute an illegal shoulder charge next season.

However the biggest change is in relation to how tries are awarded, after the 2012 season was marred by bungled calls and confusion over the rules.

From the start of the 2013 NRL season, referees will make an on-field call in relation to all try-scoring situations, and if in doubt will signal 'time out' and refer to the video referee.

However the video ref will only change the on-field referees' original decision if there is sufficient evidence to suggest that decision was wrong.

The benefit of the doubt rule resulted in Greg Inglis being awarded a highly controversial benefit of the doubt try in State of Origin I which tilted the match in Queensland's favour.

And in a sudden-death semi-final which knocked out North Queensland Cowboys, Manly Sea Eagles star Kieran Foran was given the benefit of the doubt on a crucial try despite replays showing he had clearly knocked the ball on.

The decision to alter the role of video referees was based on recommendations put forward by NRL general manager of football operations Nathan McGuirk, after consultation with NRL Referees' boss Daniel Anderson and competition committee members Wayne Bennett, Tim Sheens, Darren Lockyer, Ivan Cleary, Andrew Ryan, Laurie Daley and John Lang.

What do you make of the rule changes? Join the debate by leaving a comment at the bottom of the page!

State of Origin eligibility was another hot topic in 2012, after New Zealand-born James Tamou was allowed to represent Australia and then NSW.

Josh Papalii is yet to play for Queensland, but has changed his allegiance from the Kiwis to the Maroons.

But from 2013 no player will be eligible to play for NSW or Queensland unless he has lived in that state before the age of 13, or unless he is the son of an Origin player.

The player must also be eligible to play for Australia.

Under the new changes, Tamou and Papalii would have had to represent New Zealand - and at least now future defections can be limited.

NSW have cried foul for years over Maroons star Inglis, who was born and lived in NSW until he was a teenager.

"The intention there is to bring some real clarity around the eligibility. I think we've got some very clear rules," the general manager of strategic projects, Shane Mattiske, said on Fox Sports News.

"Importantly, we've got this new father-son rule. Now that we've got a team in Melbourne this becomes important. If Billy Slater's son ever plays for Queensland and his son grows up in Victoria, it means that Billy's son could then ensure he plays for Queensland."

"There's also clarity around the age at which you're eligibility for NSW or Queensland crystallizes.

"It's not a retrospective rule, it's something that will be applied moving forward and it just brings clarity ... which is important to us and I think it's important to all fans of the game."

After banning the shoulder charge in November, the commission provided a definition, similar to rugby union of what would define the tackle as illegal: that tacklers must attempt to make a tackle with arms out.

Hobart day five: Geeves's Top Five

A great contest ... Geeves was impressed by Australia's reverse swing in Hobart. Source:News Limited

Brett Geeves has only been to one Test this summer and what a ball he had. Here are his five final day reflections.

1. Nail-biting finish

Big news here at Bellerive Oval on day five … Peter Siddle was caught shining the ball. There is a photo sweeping the internet of Siddle holding the ball. What you can see is quite shocking - look at the state of his fingernails!  Peter needs to start giving more care to the state of them.

My recommendations would be:

1) Keep your fingernails dry and clean. This prevents bacteria, fungi and other organisms from growing under your fingernails. Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves when washing dishes, cleaning or using harsh chemicals, and avoid long soaks in the tub.

2)By the looks of it, those bad boys are down to the skin. I can guarantee that he is not able to pick open cans of Coke or find the beginning on a new roll of sticky tape with the length of those things. How do I know this? I too am a chewer of nails and in a grade game last weekend, I attempted to pick at the seam and rough side of the ball with no success. I threw the ball to Luke Butterworth instead - he is the master.

First Test ... ball tampering allegations. Source: Supplied

2. Reverse Swing

Getting the ball to reverse is as important as paying the ferryman, once you have reached your destination. Now if you listen to the slanderous words of Chris de Burgh, he will have you believe the hooded man near the rudder was dangerous and that the ferryman was running an under-the-table public transport business. If I were the ferryman, I would sue Chris de Burgh, based on the effect his hearsay words had on the Ferryman's respectable family business. Where is the Ferryman now? I'm told he and the hooded man were last seen entering Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire.

Late in one-day games, before a mandatory change of balls was brought in (over 35, now two new balls), reverse swing was used as a defensive tool. Yorkers that swing are tough to hit. Ask Karunaratne. Reverse swing was something that happened naturally with the white ball and there was no real science in getting the ball to swing in an unconventional way. The red ball, on the other hand, is a temperamental monster and requires a mother's love if you are to get it hoopin'.

For many years, Tasmania used the "spit rock" method. This involved letting the ball get wrecked and then throwing as much saliva as possible into one side of the ball. This meant that players were sharing saliva, which kept us close as a team and meant we could buy our cold sore cream in bulk and a large saving was enjoyed by all.

In 2005, Australia lost the Ashes simply because England had mastered the art of reverse swing. Simon Jones was the reverse genius and he bowled like Fred Spofforth in his heyday. Since then, Australia have put an enormous amount of time, and quite possibly money, into researching the best way of getting the Kookaburra to swing against the grain. The Poms used lollies and we were unable to find the answer.

Post 2005, Tasmania moved away from the spit rock and thought that to get proper reverse swing we had to … improvise. So, we applied chapstick (lip lubricant) to the shiny side of the ball and felt content that was the answer. So when I tell you that we went through at least three tubs of the gear in the first innings of a game against NSW, you would expect that we cheated our way to success. NSW all out for 5700 and the Blues bowling group laughing at me discreetly applying, knowing full well it wasn't having the desired effect. They knew the answer and bowled us out twice for under 200. Reverse swing is dangerous when applied correctly.

Whatever the Australians did in this Test, they need to write it down and put it away for safe keeping. They had the ball reversing for the most part of both innings. Mitch Starc and Peter Siddle have used it to full effect, bowling Australia to a hard-fought victory. Australia now has the answer - possum blood and maybe a little scratchy scratchy to the rough side? Who knows?

3. Matthew Wade bowling

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Get Adobe Flash Player

This is the conversation between Matthew Wade and Michael Clarke in the lead-up to the wicketkeeper getting a bowl. Wade: "Clarkey, I have a very, very cunning plan." Clarke: "Is it as cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on and is now working for the U.N. at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning?" Wade: "Yes, it is." Clarke: "Hmmmmmm, that's cunning."

For a shortish bloke, Wade generated some reasonable pace and impressive bounce. If he bowled in half spikes, he can expect a bruised toe on Wednesday morning and if he is lucky, his big toenail may fall off and he can use this as a practical joke on one of his teammates. The old blood-ridden toenail in the glove trick.

4. Australia win

The even better news is that Sri Lanka made them earn it. A fighting first-innings partnership from Dilshan and Mathews, a fightback with the ball at the backend of Australia's second innings and some true resilience throughout their second innings showed the tourists have plenty to offer. If this game of cricket is any indication of what we can expect throughout this series, it's going the distance.

5. Stumps in Hobart

I'm actually done - I would like to thank a few people. Thanks for having me foxsports.com.au users; bombard the comments if you want some more. The ABC crew are a tremendous bunch to work with and I thank them for having me as part of their team for the Test as well. I did get to enjoy a dinner with them and if it wasn't for the fact that Jim Maxwell fell asleep at the table, I could say a terrific night was had by all.  Last, and by no means least, thanks also to the caterers.

Roosters calm over SBW deal delay

Doubts ... Concers are starting to emerge as Williams' contract still hasn't been finalised. Source: Phil Hillyard / News Limited

Sydney Roosters aren't concerned their marquee signing Sonny Bill Williams' return to the NRL is in danger of heading down the same path as Israel Folau's aborted comeback to the code.

Five weeks after the dual international was finally unveiled as the club's biggest recruit in years, Williams' one-year contract is yet to be officially registered by the NRL's salary cap auditor Ian Schubert.

The 27-year-old is expected at training with the Roosters in just over 50 days after he finishes his rugby union commitments in Japan and fights South African Francois Botha in a heavyweight boxing bout.

But Roosters fans might be feeling a bit jittery that the strapping New Zealander's $550,000 deal hasn't been ratified, potentially jeopardising an emotion-charged return to rugby league after walking out on the Bulldogs in 2008.

Folau walked away from a return to the NRL with Parramatta earlier this month, opting for a switch to rugby union with the NSW Waratahs as he ''couldn't wait any longer sitting around'' for his contract to be sorted out.

However, Sydney Roosters chief operating officer Brian Canavan isn't fretting over the time taken to get Williams' deal ticked off and still hopes for a resolution over the next week.

''We're just exchanging correspondence back and forth (with the NRL),'' said Canavan on Tuesday.

''It's just the process that happens with these more extended contracts.

''The sooner the better. It would be lovely before Christmas.''

Canavan even suggested the reported jump in the salary cap from $5.85 million in 2013 to $6.3 million in 2014 will put the club in a strong position to extend the in-demand Williams' stay at Bondi Junction.

''We'd like to make him as comfortable and as happy as we can so he looks to our club to be his future,'' he said.

''We've just got to let that unfold.

''He wants to prove himself again in rugby league. If that's comfortable with him, we'll have further chats with him as soon as he opens the door.''

Canavan also isn't worried about Williams' February 8 bout in Brisbane in light of Cronulla captain Paul Gallen's elbow injury that flared up boxing in Auckland last weekend.

''That's the risk you take,'' he said.

''The physical preparation leading up to a fight is incredibly intense and that actually benefits them.''

Williams is expected to pull on the famous red, white and blue jersey for the Roosters' last trial match against the Wests Tigers on February 23 at Allianz Stadium.

Scorchers win shortened slog-fest

A final-over six from Shan Marsh sealed an incredible victory for Perth Scorchers in a rain-hit KFC T20 Big Bash League clash against Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on Tuesday.

T20 - Gabba

18 December 2012 - Day 1, Session 2

Scorchers 1st Innings

S. Marsh 19 11 1 1 172.73
N. Coulter-Ni... 23 6 2 2 383.33
T. Perera 0.2 0 8 0 24.00

The Scorchers were chasing 51 off just five overs after rain forced the players off the field for over an hour, and a win looked unlikely for the away side when they were 0-16 after two overs.

But some tremendous batting from Marsh and pinch-hitter Nathan Coulter-Nile saw Perth get home with four balls and nine wickets to spare.

Earlier, Chris Lynn belted the fastest half-century of this summer's Big Bash League competition was the highlight of a rain-marred Brisbane Heat innings.

Lynn took just 27 balls to reach his half-century before being dismissed for 51 as the Heat reached 4-109 off 13.1 overs before rain prematurely ended their innings.

Lynn's knock, which featured three sixes and five boundaries, lifted the Heat from a precarious 3-19 thanks to an 84-run fourth-wicket stand with Dan Christian (37no).

Alfonso Thomas and Michael Beer both took two wickets each with Thomas's scalps coming in the opening over including a smart catch on the boundary by youngster Hilton Cartwright to remove Luke Pomersbach (0).

Tinkler supported at Knights meeting

Written By Unknown on Senin, 17 Desember 2012 | 18.48

Support ... Tinkler received the backing of at least one KMC member on Monday night. Source: Liam Driver / News Limited

A member of the Newcastle Knights board that approved Nathan Tinkler's takeover has called for caution over the rising rancour about the NRL club's future.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

The Knights Members Club (KMC) directors and Hunter Sports Group (HSG) met on Monday night, with the former airing concerns about the direction of the club and Tinkler's spiralling debt.

Tinkler's right-hand man, HSG chief executive Troy Palmer, Knights boss Matt Gidley and coach Wayne Bennett addressed the KMC and did their best to allay fears at the meeting.

Palmer and Gidley reinforced their view that a tax bill of approximately $3 million would be paid, all of HSG's creditors would be paid, and that an audit report into the Knights' 2012 financial operations would reveal HSG had met all requirements.

Despite rumblings otherwise, KMC chairman Nicholas Dan wasn't ready to demand Tinkler hand back the NRL licence.

"It's a privately owned club and it's in their hands what happens from here," Dan said on Monday.

It was the first KMC meeting since the tax office moved last week to liquidate eight companies linked to Tinkler, including the Knights, and Newcastle Jets.

Tinkler's public perception problem has become a crisis over the past week, but one man who was sitting on the club's board when the white knight rode into town in 2011 leapt to his defence.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

"It's disappointing that such a great bloke is sitting on hard times," said the board member who did not wish to be named.

"The good thing about him is the one love he has got is for his Knights and the players he's formed a bond with.

"You can pat a horse but it won't talk back to you.

"He'll bounce back and I know the players aren't worried."

Tinkler offloaded his prized racehorse All Too Hard on the weekend, with some suggesting the funds could be used to pay off HSG debts.

Even if the KMC was to make a stand against Tinkler, it's unlikely to happen before an independent audit into HSG's finances, which will examine whether Tinkler has met all obligations in his takeover.

Gidley and Dan agreed in principle last Wednesday to change the audit date from December 15 to January 21.

Brent Perkins, partner of Knights auditors Crosbie Warren Sinclair, noted on Monday the delay had nothing to do with Tinkler's precarious financial situation.

"As the financial reporting year is to 31 December, this (audit) obviously could not be completed and issued for the full year by that date (December 15)," Perkins said.

"We understand that the recently proposed amendments will allow the audit to be completed and our report to be issued by 21 January each year."

Even if HSG makes good on its debt-clearing promise, Dan still has concerns about the club's reputation.

"We're very happy with the way memberships have increased and the money spent on facilities but we've got to look more broadly at the brand,'' Dan told Sky Sports Radio on Monday.

"I firmly believe creditors need to be paid in a timely manner."

Palmer suggested there were issues HSG "should apologise for" but was steadfast the club was in safe hands.

"I talk to Nathan every day ... there is no chance of Nathan going under," Palmer said.

Shinji keen on extra year out West

Big boost ... Shijni Ono (L) has says he wants to stay longer at the Wanderers. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

Western Sydney received another boost in their impressive debut A-League season with news Japanese marquee signing Shinji Ono wants to extend his stay at the club.

Just two days after scoring a dramatic 2-0 derby win over Sydney FC in front of a raucous crowd of 26,000 at Allianz Stadium, the 33-year-old on Monday said flares thrown by Wanderers fans won't hold him back from re-signing.

"I don't know what (the Wanderers) are thinking about next season," said Ono, who penned a one-year deal in September.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

"But I can say I want to stay longer."

Ono was still buzzing from the impressive victory over the Sky Blues and believes it's no fluke the Wanderers have climbed to fourth on the ladder in their inaugural season given their "good mentality and fighting spirit."

And that strong bond will be severely tested over the next four rounds when they face fellow top-five sides Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne Victory and Central Coast.

But Ono says his best is yet to come.

"I think my confidence is getting better every day," he said.

Ono wasn't fazed by flares being thrown onto the ground against the Sydney FC, putting the incidents down to the passion of a crosstown rivalry.

Having played 112 games for Dutch club Feyenoord from 2001-05, Ono says that kind of fan behaviour highlights the intensity of the clash.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

"When I was in the Netherlands, there were big derby games," said Ono of the rivalry amongst the three Rotterdam clubs.

"When I saw that (against Sydney FC) I knew it was a big game."

The attacking midfielder is looking forward to testing himself against a speedy Adelaide United at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night.

"They have a lot of good quality," Ono said of classy Reds including Fabio Ferreira, Jeronimo Neumann, Marcelo Carrusca and Cassio.

"But we have been preparing well.

"It's a tough challenge. But I have a good feeling."

Ono expects more Japanese players will make the move to Australia given his successful stint has created plenty of interest back home.

But one clash that would gain plenty of excitement in Japan is firmly on his radar - the A-League All Stars match against Manchester United next July.

Ono has put his hand up for the All Stars in a battle that could pit him against his compatriot and Red Devils star midfielder Shinji Kagawa.

Haddin in frame as Test batsman

On the radar ... Haddin has been in sparkling form for NSW this season. Source: News Limited

Australia selectors will consider picking former Test keeper Brad Haddin as a specialist batsman if captain Michael Clarke's injury rules him out of matches in Melbourne or Sydney.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Get Adobe Flash Player

The 35-year-old, who has controversially been overlooked for Matthew Wade this summer, could be thrown a lifeline if Clarke's hamstring problem stops him playing either of the remaining Tests against Sri Lanka from Boxing Day.

Haddin has averaged 67.40 in the Sheffield Shield for NSW this season and former captain Steve Waugh recently suggested he should be considered for a batsman-only role.

"We'll discuss that tonight (Monday night)," Australia coach Mickey Arthur said.

"That batter, whoever it is, would have to be part of our extended squad. There's possibilities.

"Haddin's one of them, (Rob) Quiney's one of them and certainly Usman Khawaja's very much in the frame.

"Alex Doolan has played well."

Australia will no doubt try to everything they can to get Clarke onto the MCG in a week's time but, if he is prescribed a rest period, vice-captain Shane Watson will almost certainly take over as skipper.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Former Test No.3 Khawaja has thrived playing for his new state Queensland with a brilliant century on a tough Hobart pitch and three 50s in Shield cricket so far.

Bulls coach Darren Lehmann believes Khawaja has addressed selectors' concerns about his sharpness at the crease and in the field.

Tasmania's Doolan made 161 not out for Australia A against South Africa, while Quiney would be getting a second chance after he made just nine runs in his two matches against the Proteas.

Injuries have decimated what had been a deep pool of fast bowlers, with Ben Hilfenhaus one of seven pacemen who could have been considered.

Selectors are likely to turn to 12th man for Hobart Mitchell Johnson, whose return in Perth after a 12-month absence was encouraging.

Tasmania's Jackson Bird sits atop the leading wicket-takers list for the second straight season and will be considered as back-up along with West Australian Nathan Coulter-Nile.

"All I can say is we've had a list of bowlers leading into our summer, and we're well down the list at the moment," Arthur said.

"The names that have been on everyone's lips are a guy like Jackson Bird, it could be Nathan Coulter-Nile, and that will form part of the discussions."

Complicating matters is a lack of first class cricket while the Big Bash League is completed.

The Sheffield Shield season was suspended at the end of November and the next match won't begin until the end of January.

Bell, Trott secure England's series win

Super finish ... Bell was unbeaten on 116 when the game was declared a draw. Source: AP

England batted for more than two sessions on day five to secure a draw in the final Test in Nagpur and beat India 2-1 in the series.

4th Test - Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium

13 December 2012 - Day 5, Session 3

England 2nd Innings

I. Bell 116 306 16 1 37.91
J. Root 20 56 1 1 35.71
G. Gambhir 2 0 4 0 2.00

England needed to avoid defeat in the final Test to secure a first series triumph in the country in 27 years.

And the result was never in doubt on the final day as Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell both secured centuries before the players finally shook hands after tea with the tourists on 4-352.

Having resumed in the morning on 3-161, the first hour was always going to dictate how the day would play out, but Trott and Bell remained largely untroubled as they kept the scoreboard ticking over.

Bell, who had looked out of sorts after missing the second Test to return home for the birth of his child, brought up his half-century off 130 balls.

And then Trott, who had found himself at the centre of the action during a fiery fourth day, reached his century off 232 deliveries.

Piyush Chawla came closest to removing Trott in the final overs of the morning session - with a huge appeal after a quicker delivery held its line and struck the Warwickshire man on the back pad, however umpire Rod Tucker was unmoved.

It was more of the same in the afternoon session until Trott was finally out five overs before tea, tickling Ravi Ashwin straight into the hands of Virat Kohli at leg slip for 143.

He and Bell had put on 208 for the fourth wicket with Bell adding just 26 runs in the second session to move on to 87 not out, having had one escape on 75 when a fierce cut at Chawla was edged and put down by Virender Sehwag at slip.

He was joined by debutant Joe Root who promptly lofted the ninth ball he faced, from Ashwin, into the stands as England went to tea on 4-310.

They resumed after the break with the only remaining question being whether Bell would reach his 17th Test hundred and his first in India.

It, like the result, was a formalilty in the end and he got there with a leg glance from the 293rd ball he faced, eventually making 116 not out while Root remained on 20 not out before the players called it a day an hour into the final session.

'A season-defining derby win'

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 16 Desember 2012 | 18.48

Derby delight ... Bozza heaps praise on Western Sydney Wanderers. Source: Mark Evans / News Limited

Fox Sports football commentator Mark Bosnich and Melbourne Victory legend Kevin Muscat look at a changing of the guard in Sydney as they review round 11 of the A-League.

Central Coast Mariners 2 defeated Melbourne Heart 0 at Bluetongue Stadium

Bozza: The Mariners just keep on defying everybody. Graham Arnold takes great delight in telling us his side is flying under the radar, but I'm sorry Arnie, you are the A-League favourites. They are a wonderfully run club and brilliantly coached. They have some superb individuals who don't get the credit they deserve. There's still a long way to go and they'll be mindful that they haven't won the trophy in the past couple of seasons.

Perth Glory 3 defeated Newcastle Jets 0 at nib Stadium

Bozza: Perth Glory have a very good squad. Liam Miller is key for them. He was outstanding on Friday night against Newcastle Jets. For them to go one better this year, they'll need to keep him fit and firing all season.

Kevin Muscat: The Jets defender did dive in for the penalty call, and he gave the referee the opportunity to give the penalty. He's gone through him. He had to try and block the shot and was maybe a bit unlucky with the wet pitch.

Melbourne Victory 1 drew with Brisbane Roar 1 at AAMI Park

Kevin Muscat: For long periods, we created a lot of chances. But we give teams leads too often, then try and catch up. You can't keep giving away goals and trying to play catch up. All in all, we can take that as a very good performance. We'll review the performance and not the result. There are a lot more positives than negatives. Our players have had to adapt and they know what Ange wants. We've scored some goals playing out from the back, which has been particularly enjoyable. We're working hard on our defensive part of the game.

Bozza: The Victory are constantly improving. Ange Postecoglou's philosophy of playing out from the back was perhaps a bit overplayed at the start of the season. They've curtailed that and are looking good. Melbourne Victory's fitness looks very good - don't underestimate the importance of fitness. In terms of their championship credentials, I still think the Victory are contenders. I saw them in pre-season and since then they've gone from strength to strength.

Bozza: The Wanderers were marvellous. They were that little bit faster, hungrier and more determined. Their decisions were better. Sydney FC had no answers. I'm very happy for the new boys. To come back and win away from home against your local rivals is a wonderful feeling and one they will treasure for a very long time. The players are playing for Poppa. I see a lot of his style in their play. Every time Wanderers counter-attacked, they countered with a purpose. They looked really dangerous on the break. A fantastic performance and maybe a season-defining one for them. Sydney just weren't at the races - they were tactically outplayed.

Kevin Muscat: I see such a hunger in the Wanderers squad. Tony Popovic has picked up a lot of players that were maybe unwanted at other A-League clubs and they're just churning out the results. Frank is under no illusion as to the difficult task on his hands. He'll go back to work on Monday and focus on getting the players where he needs them to be.

Adelaide United 3 defeated Wellington Phoenix 1 at Hindmarsh Stadium

Kevin Muscat: If that penalty would have gone in at the end, everyone would have been looking the Phoenix's earlier disallowed goal. Thankfully for the referee, Galekovic made that wonderful save. It was such a borderline decision. It was a very difficult decision. If Paul Ifill had a little bit more awareness he could have cut it back and they would have had a simple tap-in goal. Adelaide have so many attacking options in the final third. Marcelo Carrusca of late has been wonderful, linking the midfield and attack. He's added great direction in that area for the Reds.

Bozza: There was some really bad defending from the Phoenix in this one. In saying that, a lot of a credit must go to Wellington because a lot of other teams would have thrown it in. They kept going and going and going. Wellington have left their run too late again, just like against the Victory a few weeks back. The coaching staff would be wondering why they can't play like that for the first 20 minutes.

Scorchers stop the rot with easy win

The Sydney Sixers' golden Twenty20 run came to an abrupt end on Sunday as the Perth Scorchers began their road to recovery by cruising to victory in the Big Bash League grand final rematch at the SCG.

T20 - Sydney Cricket Ground

Scorchers 1st Innings

S. Katich 8 4 0 1 200
L. Feldman 3.2 0 13 1 3.90

In a game where anything can happen, the Sixers' 12-match winning streak was something to behold.

But Sunday's seven-wicket loss proved even the world's best can have a shocker in the T20 form, as the Sixers suffered a devastating early collapse before turning in a sloppy effort in the field defending their modest total of 9-113.

Led by a 51-run opening stand by Herschelle Gibbs (40 from 42) and Shaun Marsh, the Scorchers chased down the total with four balls remaining to record their first win of the season and get themselves off the bottom of the ladder.

Things got a little tight for the Scorchers towards the end, until captain Simon Katich came to the crease with his side needing 12 from 12 and smashed a six off the first ball he faced.

Since the Sixers beat Perth in last summer's BBL grand final, the Sydney-siders went from strength to strength to be crowned Champions League kings in October.

The Scorchers on the other hand made headlines for all the wrong reasons in the tournament held in South Africa - failing to get out of the group stage and finding themselves embroiled in off-field controversy after an alcohol-fuelled night out.

Perth promised to make things right in the BBL and Sunday's breakthrough win after back-to-back losses to open the tournament proved the West Australians cared about restoring pride.

It's Justin Langer's first win as coach since taking over as Warriors and Scorchers mentor in mid-November.

Just four nights ago the Scorchers were skittled for a BBL-low 69 in an emphatic, albeit controversial loss to the Melbourne Stars in Perth.

But this time it was their turn to decimate an opposition, as they left the Sixers reeling for 5-18 and 6-28, before allowing the tail to score 42 runs from the final five overs.

The Scorchers' triumph after winning the toss meant the chasing team has now won nine out of nine times this BBL season.

Alfonso Thomas, Michael Beer and Hilton Cartwright took two wickets each for the Scorchers, with Brad Haddin (10) the only batsman out of Sydney's top six to reach double figures.

Outstanding ... Galekovic's penalty save was a brilliant piece of goalkeeping. Source:News Limited

Adelaide United skipper Eugene Galekovic confirmed his place as one of the A-League's finest goalkeepers on Sunday with a superb save against Wellington.

The Reds had the game in the bag at 3-1 when the Phoenix were awarded a penalty just moments before the final whistle.

Teenager Tyler Boyd stepped up to the penalty spot and fired his shot to Galekovic's right, the Reds shot-stopper thrusting his hand above his head to block the attempt.

And Galekovic's brilliant effort didn't end there as he returned to his feet to block Boyd's second attempt on the rebound.

Fox Sports football commentator Mark Bosnich paid tribute to Galekovic while awarding him his Save of the Week for round 11.

"Outstanding," Bosnich said of Galekovic's effort.

"It's very, very difficult to change your direction in terms of the height that you dive.

"You have to decide as a goalkeeper when you're facing a penalty whether you're going to dive low or a little bit high.

"He decided to go low and halfway through realised he had to put up his left hand and not only that … the agility he showed in getting up."

The former Socceroos keeper said Galekovic's save will have given the Reds some extra confidence ahead of next week's battle with the in-form Western Sydney Wanderers.

"You saw the reaction from his teammates – it fills you with so much confidence as a team when you've got a great goalkeeper behind you," Bosnich said.

England close in on famous victory

Solid ... Jonathan Trott put England in a strong position on day four. Source:AAP

England are on the brink of securing a famous Test series victory on Indian soil after reaching stumps well-placed on 3-161 on day four in Nagpur - an overall lead of 165.

Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell kept India at bay throughout the majority of the evening session and time is quickly running out for the hosts to force the victory they need to square the four-match series.

4th Test - Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium

13 December 2012 - Day 4, Session 3

England 2nd Innings

J. Trott 66 153 9 0 43.14
I. Bell 24 67 4 0 35.82
P. Ojha 23 10 39 1 1.70

If they fail to do so, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni may well rue a baffling morning session on the penultimate day which saw India add just 29 runs in over an hour before declaring on 9-326 still four runs adrift of England's first-innings total.

At no great rush, England then began adding to their advantage, with openers Alastair Cook and Nick Compton sharing a 48-run partnership before both fell in controversial circumstances in the afternoon session.

Not for the first time in the match, Cook was left perplexed when umpire Kumar Dharmasena gave him out with evidence suggesting he should not have been.

Ravi Ashwin was the beneficiary on this occasion with Dhoni claiming a thin edge behind the stumps.

Compton also fell to spin, however he too could count himself unlucky after appearing to get an inside edge on to the ball before he was adjudged lbw to Pragyan Ojha in the last passage of play before tea.

Kevin Pietersen was undone by left-arm spin yet again after the break, inexplicably leaving a straight ball from Ravindra Jadeja, which crashed into off

Trott, who survived a huge caught behind appeal from Ishant Sharma when on 43, is unbeaten on 66 and will resume alongside Bell (24no) with the second new ball due in one over's time.

Despite still trailing by four first-innings runs, India captain Dhoni had earlier declared after a dull opening hour on day four, where his team added just 29 runs.

Not a single boundary was scored by India, who showed little intent to score quickly, while England were more than content to let them take time out of the game.

Ashwin (29 no) continually turned down runs, while Monty Panesar (1-81) could barely muster the enthusiasm to celebrate when he bowled Ojha for three.
