Maloney shines for Roosters

A Herculean defensive display from the Sydney Roosters laid the foundation for an 8-0 win over Brisbane in Saturday's NRL clash at Allianz Stadium.

James Maloney scored all of the points, running in for the only try of the game on the half-hour mark and then kicking a penalty goal midway through the second period.

It was a night of frustration for the visitors which will be a huge concern for coach Anthony Griffin, who watched his side dominate possession in the second half but fail to trouble the scorers.

Trent Robinson's side were truly heroic in front of their own goalline, keeping their line intact brilliantly.

At one stage, they held firm for seven successive sets of six as the Broncos took residency inside their 20-metre line - only to come up short on every occasion.

With Justin Hodges sidelined through injury, the Broncos looked bereft of genuine scoring options as halves Scott Prince and Peter Wallace failed to spark their side.

For the Roosters, Sonny Bill Williams had his best game since returning to the NRL, clocking up 36 tackles and more than 100 metres.

But he was not alone. Martin Kennedy, Jake Friend and Sam Moa were also magnificent in front of a crowd of 13,047.

Attacks were few and far between for the hosts, with Daniel Tupou squandering a glorious opportunity after failing to capitalise on a superb break from the fleet-footed Michael Jennings.

But it mattered not as the tricolours held firm to seal a successive victory and record a first shut-out since 2008 when they beat St George Illawarra 10-0.

Sydney Roosters coach Robinson was full of praise for his side's character under pressure.

"The effort was outstanding," Robinson said.

"We knew what was coming at us. We moved forward fast - put some pressure on them when we could.

"We also slid well and worked hard from the inside when they tried to go around us so it was a nice performance in 'D'."

Robinson singled out Williams and Kennedy for special praise with the pair combining for 73 tackles between them.

"I left Marty on for a bit longer than normal because he never looked tired,'' he said.pe``It was a really, really strong 80 minutes from Sonny.

It's really impressive, I think, to see the balance between some nice attacking play and then just - he'll do anything to work hard for the bloke next to him.

"It's obviously something that he's prided himself on over the years."

Broncos coach Griffin refused to be too critical of his players, despite their lack of attacking prowess.

"It wasn't a step backwards in effort. I thought it was just a real good tight game of footy," Griffin said.

"We had our chances and the Roosters were good enough to turn up and I thought we turned up all night on them as well.

"It's just one of those games and it was always going to be one of those games, a real slugfest, and they got that one try which was the difference."

Reds down Bulls in thrilling finish

Key man ... Quade Cooper scored a try and set one up on Saturday night. Source: Dave Hunt / AAP

Ten months of frustration might not be over just yet for Queensland Reds captain James Horwill judging by his side's 23-18 Super Rugby win over the Bulls at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

The Wallabies skipper ended a 308-day wait on the sidelines with hamstring and ankle problems when he finally led out his beloved Reds against the South African conference leaders in front of the 28,399-strong Brisbane faithful.

However, Horwill might still have some anxious days ahead of him based on the Reds' erratic display.

He watched hopelessly from the bench after his 40-minute comeback cameo as the Bulls not only reeled in a 13-6 halftime deficit by the 49th minute but threatened to snatch a last-gasp victory.

The Bulls looked to have sealed it when Bjorn Basson crashed over after the siren - only for video replays to show Chris Feauai-Sautia's tackle had forced the winger to put a stray foot into touch.

In the end, an error-riddled Queensland (4-2 record) somehow emerged victorious against the relentless South Africans (3-2).

Queensland's frustrating form was best summed up by the opening minutes of the second half.

They were their own worst enemies as silly mistakes gifted three penalties in six minutes, allowing the Bulls to reclaim the lead 15-13 just nine minutes into the second half.

However, in what appeared a square-up after Reds No.15 Jono Lance's dubious first-half yellow card, Bulls winger Grenton Mapoe was sin-binned in the 52nd minute for a lifting tackle on Reds prop James Slipper.
And the Reds pounced.

No.10 Quade Cooper combined beautifully with halves partner Will Genia to exploit their sudden one-man advantage on the left edge and cross a minute later to establish a 20-15 lead.

Both sides exchanged penalties, setting the scene for the heart-stopping finale.

Genia set up the halftime buffer when he inspired phase after phase before a jinking Cooper set up Lance with just minutes left on the clock in the first half.

Reds director of coaching Ewen McKenzie equalled Robbie Deans' record of 120 Super Rugby games as coach on Saturday night.

Wanderers streak ends in derby

Drama ... Brett Emerton is sent off after a clumsy challenge. Source: Adam Taylor / News Limited

Sydney FC ended Western Sydney Wanderers' 10-game A-League winning streak with a controversial 1-1 draw at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday in a pulsating derby in which both sides were reduced to 10 men.

In a contest worthy of the pre-game hype, a brave Sydney held on against a fast-finishing Wanderers after an Alessandro Del Piero strike for the visitors in the 34th minute was matched by Shannon Cole's free-kick in the 69th minute.

The Wanderers' equaliser came after Sydney were reduced to 10 men in the 56th minute when captain Brett Emerton was handed a straight red card by referee Kris Griffiths-Jones for a clumsy challenge on Cole.

P W D L GD Pts

2 Central Coast 25 14 6 5 23 48
3 Victory 26 12 5 9 2 41
4 Adelaide 25 12 4 9 3 40

8 Brisbane 25 8 5 12 0 29
9 Heart 25 8 3 14 -6 27
10 Wellington 26 7 6 13 -17 27

The Wanderers constantly pressed forward in the final 20 minutes searching for a record 11th win but the Sydney defence was up to the challenge before 19,585 fans.

In time added on, Iacopo La Rocca was also given a straight red for striking Terry Antonis in the face, in an incident which could have major implications for the Wanderers.

With one round to play, the point could be enough to lift fifth-placed Sydney into the finals.

Anything other than a Central Coast victory over Adelaide on Sunday will deliver the minor premiership to the Wanderers in their debut season.

A shocking defensive mistake from stand-in captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley handed Sydney the opening goal.
Topor-Stanley passed lazily across goal and Del Piero pounced.

The Italian World Cup winner worked the ball into the box despite the attention of Topor-Stanley and La Rocca. Del Piero then showed his class to thread the ball past Ante Covic at the far post.

But Cole saved his side with a sublime free-kick that has all but secured the Wanderers top spot on the A-League ladder.

Inspired second half sees Freo home

Bounding ... Stephen Hill is too quick for his West Coast opponents and was instrumental in the win. Source: TONY MCDONOUGH / AAP

Fremantle booted 11 second half goals to score derby bragging rights while the Eagles' loss was soured further by a broken arm to Mark LeCras.

In scenes reminiscent of Friday night's clash in Adelaide, the Eagles shot out of the blocks with the first three goals before being pegged back late in the term.

Ashton Hams and Jamie Cripps were in fine form for the Eagles early before the Dockers started their surge, eventually running out winners 16.12.108 to 11.14.80.

Michael Barlow was in scintillating form for the Dockers with 27 possessions, while Matthew Priddis of the Eagles had a game-high 28, including 17 contested.

Michael Walters and Nick Suban booted three goals each while Danyle Pearce showed why Ross Lyon was keen on acquiring the veteran with two key goals that sparked the Dockers in the second half.

Matthew Pavlich had a quiet night in front of goal and will have to explain himself to the AFL after being cited for charging Will Schofield in the first half.

West Coast's night was made even more forgettable by a serious arm injury to Mark LeCras. The forward was playing his first home and away game since rupturing his ACL last season and early signs suggest a broken right arm.

Eric Mackenzie also limped off with a hamstring injury while for the Dockers, Pavlich suffered split webbing and Ballantyne is nursing a lower leg complaint.

Full report to come shortly.

Mike Phillips ... 'Fiesty, niggly and aggressive'. Source: Andrew Brownbill / AP

Which players can we expect to see run out in the famous red and white of the British and Irish Lions against the Wallabies in June?

Sky Sports UK commentators Scott Quinnell and Will Greenwood have named their Lions starting XV following Wales' back-to-back Six Nations triumph.

The pair agreed that Welsh scrum-half Mike Phillips would "bully" the Aussies with his "fiesty and aggressive" playing style.

They were equally buoyant about the prospects of the man they tipped to partner Phillips in the halves.

"You think you boys have got the monopoly on playing football ... Johnny Sexton will come and show you some wide zip passes with left and right hands," Greenwood said.

Former Wallabies Brendan Cannon and Tim Horan agreed their were plenty of spots still up for grabs in Robbie Deans' side ahead of the first Test on June 22.

Speaking on Fox Sports' Rugby HQ, the pair named Brumbies stars Ben Mowen, Christian Lealiifano and Jesse Mogg as potential candidates for a Wallabies jumper.

Two tries in the opening 20 minutes from Chris Lawrence laid the foundations for the Tigers' comfortable lead after the Eels twice coughed up the ball deep in their own half.

Mitchell Allgood and Jarryd Hayne were both guilty of losing possession and the hosts took full advantage, twice spreading the ball to the left and Lawrence muscled his way past Chris Sandow to score.

The Eels struggled to get out of their own half as the Tigers laid siege but should have scored from their first genuine attack after a booming 40-20 from Sandow found touch.

However, Allgood dropped the ball as he crossed the line and the chance went begging.

With the newly re-signed Robbie Farah and Benji Marshall dominating, the Eels could not get a foothold on the game and they didn't help their cause by giving away needless penalties.

The visitors were made to pay on the half-hour mark when Blake Ayshford darted over in the right corner to stretch his side's advantage.

The Eels almost reduced the deficit on the stroke of halftime when Hayne made a great break down the left wing.

He released Vai Toutau, who in turn found Jacob Loko, but the young centre, under pressure from Farah, butchered the chance to score just in front of the line.

18-0 at the break, the Eels started the second half with a big through a Ryan Morgan try.

However with a penalty to the Tigers, Marshall took advantage of a napping defence and ran 70 meters to extend their lead.

A defensive error from Vai Toutai in his own in goal gifted Tim Moltzen a four-pointer although the winger did score one of his own to atone for the earlier mistake.

Loko then crossed two minutes later and Sandow's conversion made it a 12 point ball game.

Miller nailed a field goal in the 73rd minute.

Ashwin dominates Aussies yet again

Chief destroyer ... Ashwin dominated the Aussie batsmen on day one. Source: Noah Seelam / AAP

India spinner Ravi Ashwin triggered a middle-order collapse before tailender Peter Siddle hit a career-best 47 not out to guide Australia to 8-231 on day one of the fourth Test.

4th Test - Feroz Shah Kotla

22 March 2013 - Day 1, Session 3

Australia 1st Innings

P. Siddle 47 125 4 0 37.6
J. Pattinson 11 57 1 0 19.3
R. Jadeja 22 6 34 2 1.55

No.9 batsman Siddle held the innings together with partnerships of 53 with Steve Smith and 42 with James Pattinson (11 not out in 71 minutes).

No.3 Phil Hughes (45) and opener Ed Cowan (38) made starts but tailender Siddle was one of only two batsmen to soak up 100 balls, alongside No.6 Smith who hit 46 off 145 deliveries.

Ashwin claimed 4-40 off 30 overs, giving him 26 scalps for the four-match series which India lead three-nil.

In sunny conditions on Friday on a dusty, cracked pitch - already starting to show signs of variable bounce at Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla ground - the visitors once again had no answer to India's spinners.

India employed a three-pronged spin attack which included Ravindra Jadeja (2-34) and Pragyan Ojha (0-67).

Stand-in skipper Shane Watson's men were well placed at lunch at 2-94 after losing the wickets of David Warner for a duck and Hughes, who hit 10 boundaries in his 45.

Cowan was bowled around his legs attempting to sweep Ashwin at 3-106, as five wickets tumbled for 30 runs.

The key dismissal of Watson came nine runs later, stumped for 17. Matthew Wade (two) appeared unlucky to be given out caught bat-pad at silly point.

Indian Premier League million-dollar man Glenn Maxwell (10) was caught at wide mid-on.

Mitchell Johnson was bowled for three at 7-136, offering no shot to Ashwin.

Smith hit three fours and two sixes in an important two-and-a-half-hour knock. The 23-year-old was Ashwin's fourth victim, caught at short leg after adding 53 vital runs for the eighth wicket with Siddle.

Caviar canters to 24th win

Smile for the photo ... Black Caviar brings up win 24 in the William Reid Stakes. Source: Joe Castro / AAP

Mighty mare Black Caviar has done it again, winning for the 24th consecutive occasion in front of 25,000-plus adoring fans at Moonee Valley.

The Peter Moody-trained champion toyed with her inferior opposition as she raced away to win the Group 1 $400,000 William Reid Stakes at the prohibitive odds of $1.04 by a margin of four lengths. Karuta Queen finished second.

The win sees her join the legendary Kingston Town on an Australian record of 14 Group 1 victories.

The farewell whistle-stop tour up the eastern states now heads to Sydney for the T.J. Smith - and maybe the All Aged Stakes - and then possibly Brisbane for another QTC Cup.

Or as some suggest, another trip to Royal Ascot in June could be on the cards as a more fitting farewell.

Such was her pulling power last night that some excited racegoers arrived at Moonee Valley at 4pm hoping to snare a prominent rails position after the gates opened.

Moonee Valley Racing Club spokesman Leigh Newton said it was a big night of entertainment with quality fields – and the club's last night meeting.

"But the real reason why everyone is here is Black Caviar. She has a lot of drawing power," he said.

Carissa Willis, from Woodend, was seeing the superstar mare run for the first time.

"It's really exciting to be here and be able to see her race, especially considering it's the last time we'll probably get to see her here in Melbourne," she said.

Dressed as a horse and with a cape adorned in Black Caviar's signature salmon with black spots silks, Andrew Sellers soaked up the atmosphere.

The avid punter, 34, from Hawthorn, has watched live 21 out of 24 of the mighty mare's races.

"I've followed her all the way through. I wasn't going to miss this one," he said.

"She is an amazing horse. I still remember her fourth start ... she scrambled out the barriers on her belly and she still got up and won."

'Time for Benji to be responsible'

Benji ... 'needs to be more responsible' on the field, according to Matt Johns. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

An old criticism of Benji Marshall might be heard by him again if Mick Potter shares the opinion of top rugby league analyst Peter Sterling.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Wests Tigers have had a mixed start to the year, holding on for a 10-point win over Penrith in round two after getting thumped 42-10 by Newcastle in round one.

And while they've shown glimpses of brilliance Sterling believes Marshall could be responsible for throwing wins away if he keeps choosing low percentage plays in the closing stages.

"I was concerned about some of the things he did towards the end of that win over Penrith," Sterling pointed out, speaking on his new show Sterlo on Thursday night.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

"When you get to that last 10 minutes in the game holding a lead, I'd like to see the Tigers play to the fourth or fifth tackle and then have a shot at four, have a shot at field goal or roll it into the in-goal. That's how you play out a game."

For the full Sterlo chat on Benji Marshall and the Tigers' start to the season under Mick Potter, click on the video at the top of the page!

A guest on the Sterlo panel was Marshall's Tigers teammate Braith Anasta.

The former State of Origin ball-player agreed that the genius five-eighth was still yet to find the right balance within the Tigers' new structure under Potter.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

"It's about finding a balance, I think," Anasta said.

"He's still got to play the way he does with his instinctive play and play off the cuff.

"He can read the game so well but at times he may need to pull it back, play with the structure a bit more and just be a bit more patient I suppose."

Fox Sports rugby league expert Matthew Johns went a step further, saying it was time for Marshall to finally grow into the responsibility that comes with being a senior player.

"I think you're right to be critical," Johns told Sterling.

Mick Potter's come along and he's said 'look, I'm going to put someone else in the No.7 jersey who can be the organiser so Benji can just be Benji'," Johns said.

"But, with age comes real responsibility, particularly for a man of Benji's class - he's been there for a long, long time. And you're right Pete: I wonder sometimes what goes through Benji's head.

"I'll hazard a guess and say Benji puts too much pressure on himself to look for the big play."

"I've watched him a couple of times when the ball comes loose and he picks the ball up and he just has that urgency.

"I think he's living with other people's expectations. I think it's got to be time for Benji to just take a step back."

Speaking as a special guest on Sterlo, Prince compared his arrivals at the Broncos - first as a nervous kid, then as one of the most senior players in the NRL.

"I had a moment at training about two or three weeks ago where I sat down and I really just soaked it in, where I was," Prince said.

Click on the video at the top of the page to watch Scott Prince talk about his move to the Broncos and answer questions about his "divorce" from the Titans on Sterlo.

"I thought back when I was 21 and when I was there the first time and I was sort of overwhelmed and in awe of these players - you know, Gorden Tallis, Wendell Sailor in the corner. Darren Lockyer, you know, was in the locker beside me.

"But this time I sat down and I still had that same feeling. Just that proud history that the club has.

"You're in that position where I'm wearing No.6 and I'm really honoured and proud to wear that number at the Broncos. It's what the club's done in the past and you still feel you have to live up to those expectations."

Penrith refuse to rule out Carney

Penrith refused to rule out making a play for Cronulla's Todd Carney with the cashed-up Panthers on the hunt for a star playmaker after missing out on Johnathan Thurston.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Carney admitted during the week his contract talks have been called off because of the drug scandal surrounding the NRL club which resulted in Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan being stood down.

It leaves the NSW State of Origin five-eighth unsigned for 2014 with speculation clubs like Penrith and St George Illawarra are interested in Carney's services.

Penrith recently missed out on North Queensland superstar Thurston and while Cleary didn't want to talk about potential targets ahead of Sunday's home clash with South Sydney, he admitted they were looking for "good players".

"I don't really want to talk about recruitment today. It's pretty obvious we've been active in the market last year. We've been making a lot of changes," Cleary said on Thursday.

"We're looking for good players but let's leave it at that."

The Panthers lost five-eighth Lachlan Coote for the season with a pectoral muscle tear with Cleary giving former Parramatta and Wests Tigers playmaker Tom Humble a shot at the No.6 jersey against the Rabbitohs.

"That's the great thing about professional sport. One door closes and another one opens and I'm really confident Tom will do a good job for us," Cleary said.

"It's up to him to stand up and do himself proud and take the opportunity."

Humble, 24, who will make his Panthers' debut on Sunday, is delighted to get a crack in his favourite position after playing halfback in Penrith's final trial against Parramatta.

"It's a huge opportunity for me to set myself for one position. I've played a utility role at the last couple of clubs and this is a chance to make a position my own," Humble said.

He believes the Panthers' pack hold the key to beating the Rabbitohs who have enforcer Sam Burgess returning from suspension after getting away with a 14-12 win over Cronulla on Monday.

"They don't get headlines like some other packs like Souths but they'll go forward against anybody and I'm looking forward to playing behind them," he said.

Storm clinch win over brave Bulldogs

Bulldogs coach Des Hasler said he didn't think the Slater incident was intentional.

"It was probably just dangerous play," Hasler said.

He lamented his team's failure to make the most of their chances.

"It was two points we could have got tonight.

"It was all within our grasp and we'll take some hard lessons out of it.

"We probably had some genuine opportunities we didn't really capitalise on enough."

He said troubled fullback Ben Barba was a chance to play in their Good Friday clash with Souths and he will make a decision mid next week.

The Storm repeated their 2012 grand final performance with a 22-18 victory at AAMI Park, denying a thrilling late charge by the Bulldogs.

The home side took a halftime 10-0 lead but their second half couldn't have started any worse.

Slater leapt high to take a bomb and his boots made contact with the face of the Bulldogs forward.

The video referee said Slater had "kicked him'' with referee Ben Cummins putting the Test custodian on report for dangerous play.

Cameron Smith protested that Klemmer had attempted to tackle Slater in the air but Cummins told the skipper that Slater kicked the Bulldog "before anything else happened".

Slater was only available for this match after making an early guilty plea to a dangerous contact charge after he knocked out Antonio Winterstein early in last round's win over the Cowboys.

The rattled Storm a minute later conceded a try after Bulldogs five-eighth Josh Reynolds put a cross-field kick into the hands of winger Sam Perrett to touch down.

A Cooper Cronk try was then disallowed because of obstruction by Bryan Norrie and it looked like the Bulldogs were going to cause a boil-over.

But Melbourne regrouped and scored two tries within three minutes to look to have the match in their keeping.

Winger Matt Duffie showed his aerial credentials with a special leap to take a Cronk bomb before planting the ball in the 63rd minute and he was quickly followed by young forward Lagi Setu, who burrowed across the line.

Smith added the extras and the scoreline was out to 22-6.

However the Bulldogs showed some fight to strike back with two tries of their own.

Centre Krisnan Inu and halfback Kris Keating both crossed, with Inu converting to make it 22-18 with four minutes remaining.

They had a set of six 10m from the tryline but couldn't find the points they needed with the Storm defence holding firm.

Slater said after the match he only had eyes for the ball.

"I just go up for the footy and try to protect myself as best I can," he said.

"What they (officials) saw in it, I'm not too sure."

Ultimate guide to Hong Kong Sevens

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 20 Maret 2013 | 18.48

It might be the biggest party in world rugby, but the Aussie Sevens team can't afford to lose focus in Hong Kong.

There are four tournaments to be played in this current HSBC World Sevens Series (HK, Tokyo, Glasgow, London) and while the young Australian team is out of the running to win the overall title, the Rugby World Cup Sevens will be staged in Moscow in late June and that is now a major goal for Australia.

But before that, coach Michael O'Connor and his team have some work to do, and it all starts this weekend. If Australia doesn't have a good finish to the current series they could find themselves in promotion/relegation at the final event at Twickenham and that wouldn't be a great confidence boost heading into Moscow.

I have always been a big fan of Sevens and Australian rugby has been blessed over the years to have so many Wallabies (mainly backs obviously) use the abbreviated game as a pathway to Super Rugby and full International honours.

But for those of you who haven't kept up with what is happening in Sevens, here's the deal. Firstly, it's an Olympic sport now and both the men and women will compete for a Gold Medal in Rio in 2016.

It is no longer just the big Rugby Nations who are competitive in the HSBC World Series. There are 15 'core' teams that play each tournament. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, England, Scotland, Wales, Fiji, Samoa, Kenya, Portugal, Spain, France, USA and Canada.

At each of the tournaments there's a regional qualifier and in Hong Kong it's the host nation. Points are awarded at each event and the overall winner is crowned in London. If you don't win the title the next aim is to secure a spot in the 'core 15' for next year.

All games will be shown live on Fox Sports. Just hit the red button for Viewers Choice. Australia plays Wales at 9.12 PM (EDT) on Friday, South Africa at 1.46pm and Argentina at 5.26pm on Saturday. Sunday is Finals day.

The top 12 teams on the points table after the penultimate event in Glasgow in May are safe. They will be a 'core' team in 2013-14. But the 13th, 14th and 15th placed teams on the ladder will have to go into a promotion/relegation event in London.

They'll be up against Hong Kong and another four teams who qualify via a second tier event at Hong Kong this weekend. Countries like Japan, Tonga, Uruguay, Zimbabwe, Tunisia etc are all hoping to earn a spot in London and then qualify for the next World Series.

Australia is currently 11th, just 2 points ahead of 12th placed Scotland and 7 in front of the USA who are 13th. The Aussies have been very inconsistent and have missed out on the Cup (main) quarter finals on a count back of points 'for and against' in quite a few events.

That's proven costly. They can knock over a major nation and then lose to a side they're expected to beat. One thing you can't do in Rugby Sevens is drop your concentration. Australia was second in the try scoring stats in the last event in Vegas behind winner South Africa, but ahead of New Zealand, Fiji and Canada. Trouble is they also conceded too many tries.

So there's plenty at stake for the Aussies this weekend and over the next two months. The inclusion of former captain James Stannard will add some much needed experience. He'll also lift the average age above 20.

Cowan backs Watto to lead Aussies

Backing ... Ed Cowan says Shane Watson is a different type of leader to Michael Clarke. Source: Arnulfo Franco / AAP

Opener Ed Cowan has backed Shane Watson to lead Australia in the fourth Test against India starting on Friday if Michael Clarke is unfit, describing him as a very different type of leader to the incumbent.

Watson, who lacks leadership experience at Sheffield Shield level, has been at the centre of a series of controversies in the past week.

He has battled poor form, was one of four players banned from the third Test for missing a homework assignment and only just arrived back in the country after his wife gave birth to the couple's first baby in Sydney.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

But Cowan said Watson was a lead-by-example type of captain who would do the job if Clarke succumbed to a back injury.

"He (Watson) has probably decided to come back with a full focus and we will accept him because he is such a great player and a good leader," Cowan told reporters on Wednesday.

"He is a senior player around the group and it is important those kinds of players are on board because we need those guys for this team to be the best team in the world.

"He is a very different leader to Michael but we're hoping Michael is fine for this Test.

"He (Clarke) is such a great batsman and we need his runs and his leadership."

Clarke failed to train with the team on Wednesday but he wasn't about to be ruled out just yet.

"It is a day-to-day proposition," Cowan said after training. "He's confident. Michael's expecting to play."

Cowan said the homeworkgate affair had strengthened the resolve within the team as they sought to again become the No.1 Test team in the world.

The lack of leadership experience within the side was evident in Mohali where back-up wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, 35, led the team during short periods when Clarke was off the field having treatment.

"We feel quite buoyed by the concept of moving forward together," Cowan said as the tourists aim to avoid a four-nil whitewash against India.

Cowan said he had approached Clarke, coach/selector Mickey Arthur and team manager Gavin Dovey regarding recent disciplinary lapses within the squad.

"There had been a build-up and there always comes a time where there is a breaking point and that happened in Mohali," Cowan said.

Arthur's hopes for extra leadership to return to the side fell flat on Wednesday as recently retired batsmen Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey ruled out Test comebacks.

Video: Hird's stirring praise to Bombers

Encouraging words ... James Hird pays tribute to his "outstanding" Bombers players. Source: Wayne Ludbey / News Limited

Essendon coach James Hird is confident a traumatic off-season has instilled in his AFL team the resilience they were missing.

Hird has told his players they've climbed into the elite level, which wasn't the case in his previous two years in charge.

And he says it's remarkable they've achieved it while facing an anti-doping investigation, showing tenacity he believes will pay dividends when times get tough this season.

"We've spoken a lot about the resilience of this group and that maybe in the real hard times we haven't had that resilience that we need," Hird said in a speech to his players

"I'm confident that the one element that was missing has been built on and grown.

"That you're ready to take on that challenge and ready to go to the next level and play consistently quarter after quarter after quarter and back up when things don't go your way.

"The mental capacity of you guys to do what you've done over the last six weeks and still come out and perform and train the way you've trained is outstanding."

Hird's speech, given earlier this week, aired on Essendon's show The Hangar on FOX FOOTY on Wednesday night.

So did a speech Bombers chairman David Evans gave to staff.

Evans said the club were confident they would find out whether players were given banned substances and uncover how ``irregular practices'' were allowed to develop at the club.

"Some of our systems, protocols and procedures failed us," Evans said.

"We want to make sure that that never happens again."

He said it was a traumatic time but the Bombers would end up better and stronger for it.

"I think it has galvanised us together and we want to take that into the season," Evans said.

That view was echoed by players.

Midfielder Brent Stanton said there were initial feelings of shock and disbelief when the scandal broke, while captain Jobe Watson admitted players became frightened when the scale of what they were facing hit home.

But they said the crisis had also caused them to stick tightly together as their teammates were the only ones who fully appreciated what each other were experiencing.

Ben Barba ... has his first day back at training with the Bulldogs after being discharged from a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre. Source: Phil Hillyard / News Limited

Embattled superstar Ben Barba should not be rushed back into Canterbury-Bankstown's NRL side, according to Fox Sports NRL expert Brett Kimmorley.

Barba is back at Bulldogs training, days after finishing a stint in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation clinic after being stood down indefinitely by the club to address personal problems stemming from the breakdown of his relationship with his childhood sweetheart.

Former Bulldogs halves coach, Kimmorley, says Barba will struggle to return to the football field because the scrutiny which forced him from the game will be the same when he returns.

"(Barba) will struggle to come back in because the pressures that got him into those situations are going to be the same pressures he's going to be under when he comes back," Kimmorley said on NRL 360.

"Everyone's going to say 'how good is it that Barba's back, the savior's back, were going to score points' and that scrutiny is going to come back straight on him.

Watch the video at the top of the page to see Gordie and Noddy discuss Barba's return to the NRL.

"If he couldn't handle the pressure before how is it going to be any different next time?"

Barba has not been named for the grand final re-match against Melbourne on Thursday and did not travel with the team on Wednesday.

While his return is imminent, former Australian and Queensland captain Gordon Tallis believes the more time spent on the sidelines will only increase the pressure.

"The pressure is going to be if he sits out too long and comes back out of form, there is going to be more pressure on him," Tallis said.

"There's pressure that if we wait any longer and he runs out of condition and he comes back there's going to be a huge media scrutiny on this kid that got him in trouble in the first place."

The Bulldogs will wait on a written letter from Barba's doctor clearing him to play before he makes his return.

"He got back to training last Friday so we will just have to monitor it from here on his physical wellbeing."

Bulldogs coach Des Hasler said during the week; "this early in the competition we won't be making any rash decisions."

"At the moment I can't give an answer on his immediate comeback probably until midway through next week, once he gets some solid training under his belt."

Arthur: Twitter "not worth it"

Mickey Arthur says being on Twitter is "not worth it" after the Australian coach on Tuesday quit the social-media network following a torrent of abuse over the sacking of the Mohali Four.

Arthur boasted more than 33,000 followers, but had not posted a single message since the suspension of Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson, Usman Khawaja and James Pattinson last Monday week for failing to take part in a performance review.

The South Africa-born Arthur formally deleted his account on Tuesday morning, signing off with: "Thanks twitter, has been fun but deleting my account now! Thanks to all the genuine supporters out there."

While some social-network users were supportive of Arthur, many had used the platform to launch personal attacks on the 44-year-old, who has polarised opinion over the cultural shake-up of Australian cricket.

Arthur on Tuesday explained why he decided to shut down his account as the Australian team flew out for Delhi for the fourth and final Test starting Friday.

"I just used it as a medium to get news really," he said.

"For me, it just wasn't really worth it now.

"I used it to stay in contact with a lot of mates.

"It's not earth-shattering news by any means. I think if you're on it you just open yourself up to that (abuse).

"There has been some very positive stuff as well, but it's not worth it.

"I've got bigger things to worry about than Twitter to be honest."

Arthur immediately became the butt of jokes after announcing he was quitting the network.

"Mickey Arthur has deleted his Twitter a/c and thanked all his fans but that person is yet to reply," a parody Bill Lawry account tweeted shortly after.

Arthur's most controversial tweet came during the Australian summer as the shorter-form sides were exposed by Sri Lanka on the back of several senior players being rested.

Arthur tweeted: "For the last time there is NO rotation policy - it is player management!!! Appreciate your support Aussie fans, we only want to make you proud."

The former South African coach said he had no regrets over the demotion of the Mohali Four, despite a plethora of former Test stars lambasting the decision.

"It was a stand I felt we needed to make," he said.

"The way the team has responded over the last week has been phenomenal.

"It's really been outstanding. In my opinion it was a hardline stance but it had to happen.

"You've got to understand that it was done with the team in mind, and it was done so we could make a real paradigm shift in where we were going to.

"Would I do it again? Yeah I would, because I think it was the right thing to do for this cricket team at this stage."

The fourth and final Test against India starts in Delhi on Friday, but the Aussies will be without quick Mitch Starc, who this morning flew home to have ankle surgery to ensure he is fit for the Ashes.

Smith lashes 'inconsistent' refs

Not happy ... Cameron Smith lashes NRL refs regarding Billy Slaters hit on Antonio Winterstein. Source: Colin Whelan / AAP

Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith has called for greater consistency from NRL referees in officiating on the newly outlawed shoulder charge.

While teammate Billy Slater only escaped suspension through an early guilty plea after a hit on North Queensland winger Antonio Winterstein during Saturday night's game, Smith says he's already seen a number of other shoulder charges let go this season.

"For me, and I actually spoke to the referees during the game on Saturday night, we were told at the start of the year if there's any tackle made where there's no wrapping motion of the arms and it's just using your shoulder to bump someone, it's going to be penalised," Smith said.

"I've seen every game that's been played this year and it's just been let go, until someone's hit high or it looks spectacular where someone's knocked off his feet."

Smith said he remained confused by the referees and judiciary interpretation of the shoulder charge rule brought in this year after similar incidents went unpunished throughout round two.

On Monday night, South Sydney winger Nathan Merritt was overlooked after a questionable tackle on Cronulla's Matthew Wright.

"I'm not sure if the rules have changed within the referees where they interpret it differently now but, again, it's inconsistent," Smith said.

"Bill's (Slater) made a similar attempt to tackle as Nathan Merritt and there are two different outcomes.

14 Warriors 0 2 0 0 -32 0
15 Dragons 0 2 0 0 -36 0
16 Raiders 0 2 0 0 -58 0

"That's the frustrating thing for players and coaches - that inconsistency with rulings.

"If we could have the same things every week for every game there would be no dramas but at the moment it just seems to change every week."

Smith said he was certain the Storm hierarchy would take up the issue of the disparity in the Slater and Merritt cases with the referees' boss Daniel Anderson.

Meanwhile, Smith said the Storm were keenly anticipating the return of Canterbury's Ben Barba, who has been sidelined due to off-field issues.

Bulldogs coach Des Hasler says Barba will not be rushed into the side for Thursday's NRL grand final rematch at AAMI Park but Smith says the sooner the star fullback returns the better for the game.

"We're going to prepare as if he's going to be playing," Smith said.

"It will be good for our game if he's there, it will be good for the crowd if he's there because he's one of the guys in our competition who people pay money to come and watch.

"But if he's not then hopefully he's back on the paddock soon and everything is sorted out with him," Smith said.

Aussie coach Mickey Arthur quits Twitter

Australia's head cricket coach Mickey Arthur has deleted his Twitter account. Source: AAP

AUSTRALIA cricket team coach Mickey Arthur grew tired of the vitriol he was receiving on Twitter and closed his account on Tuesday.

His action led to more criticism, jibes and abuse from some frustrated followers of the injury-hit and inexperienced Australian team who lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Monday when they slumped to the third straight Test loss of their India tour - where Australia has won only one Test series since 1970.

Last week's bombshell - when Arthur announced four players including vice-captain Shane Watson had been suspended from the third Test for failing to submit required assessments on how the team could improve - was clearly a sore point for some Twitter followers.

First the controversies during the summer of the resting of key players during a busy playing schedule, and now this.

And for Arthur, it was also the last straw.

With his third-ranked side trailing three-nil in the four-match series against India and the final Test starting in Delhi on Friday, Arthur will be bothered no longer by abusive Twitter followers.

"Thanks twitter, has been fun but deleting my account now! Thanks to all the genuine supporters out there," Arthur said on Twitter on Tuesday.

He later told reporters: "I just used it (Twitter) as a medium to get news really.

"For me, it just wasn't really worth it now.

"I used it to stay in contact with a lot of mates.

"If you're on it you just open yourself up to that (abuse).

"There has been some very positive stuff as well, but it's not worth it. I've got bigger things to worry about than Twitter to be honest."

A sample of the latest advice dished out to Arthur by one frequent tweeter @jimmyob13 may indicate why Arthur stopped using social media.

"Hey Mickey Mouse @MickeyArthur do you have enough quicks for 3rd test? Now it's going to be a seamer so I suggest you play 4 spinners...," the user posted on March 12.

The following day he wrote: "@MickeyArthur How's the team spirit this morn? Did they all wear the correct uniform? Did Hughes and Warner scrub skippers whites for him?"

Arthur's decision to close his account was greeted with more scorn on Twitter.

One tweeter, @adam_pearce13 said "It's about time you focus on the cricket anyway "

Another, @willderen tweeted to Arthur "You're an idiot.", @MarkCooper said "you suck", while @KevinWilde described Arthur's move to delete his account as "weak".

Arthur last week described the decision to suspend Watson, James Pattinson, Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Johnson as a line-in-the-sand moment to create a better culture within the team after a series of disciplinary lapses by the team in general including lateness, backchat and attitude issues.

The homeworkgate affair was widely ridiculed in Australia, especially by ex-players.

Live: NRL round three teams

Dropped ... Blake Ferguson will remain in NSW Cup this weekend. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

Canberra coach David Furner has resisted the urge to rush back stood down winger Blake Ferguson for Sunday's NRL clash with struggling St George Illawarra.

Ferguson was dumped to the NSW Cup as a result of his role in the alcohol-fuelled bender which resulted in Josh Dugan being sacked by the club.

But despite the 36-point hammering by Gold Coast last Sunday, Furner has shown faith in the same backline, his only changes being the reinstatement of hooker Glen Buttriss to hooker and former Test prop Brett White to the engine room.

Ferguson is expected to continue doing his penance with Mounties in the NSW Cup.

Under-siege Dragons coach Steve Price has also opted not to ring in the changes in the face of an uninspiring 0-2 start to the season.

There was speculation Price would offer a call-up for former Manly under-20s halfback Josh Drinkwater in a bid to add some spark to a side which has managed only three tries in 160 minutes of football.

Penrith have opted to throw former Parramatta and Wests Tigers utility Tom Humble the No.6 jumper for Sunday's meeting with South Sydney, after first-choice pivot Lachlan Coote was ruled out for the year following surgery on his pectoral muscle.

Sam Burgess has been reinstated to the Rabbitohs pack following his one-game ban, with Jeff Lima dropping back to the bench.

Timana Tahu will play his first game of the year in place of injured centre Dane Gagai when Newcastle host North Queensland Cowboys on Monday night.

Gagai faces six weeks on the sidelines after injuring his ankle in the 32-0 loss to Manly on Sunday.

With Ray Thompson sidelined for a month with torn ankle ligaments, Michael Morgan will play halfback for the Cowboys, who have dropped Tariq Sims to the Queensland Cup in a bid to get the blockbusting forward more game time.

South Sydney proved just why they remain a long way from being the finished product after labouring their way to a 14-12 win over Cronulla at ANZ Stadium.

It looked a case of how many as the Rabbitohs produced a blistering start via the boot of Adam Reynolds, but the foot which hovered above the throat of the Sharks never came down amidst a barrage of dropped balls and poor last-play options.

"Credit to Cronulla, they came out and frustrated our boys and probably got us away from our plan that we've been good at the last couple of weeks.

"We're lucky with the two points and we'll get a fair bit out of that game."

Interim Cronulla coach Peter Sharp said his side was gradually dealing better with the fallout from the drugs scandal engulfing the club.

NRL chief executive Dave Smith visited the players in the dressing room after the match to offer his support.

"It was a tough old game and we hung in there so I don't think the character of this club is in question at all," Sharp said.

"They showed some great character out there tonight again under adverse conditions.

"They're getting on with their business and they'll get on with it next week."

Greg Inglis looked in an ominous mood with an early kick return providing the impetus for Souths' opener after five minutes, when Reynolds laid it on a platter for Andrew Everingham with a deft chip kick.

Reynolds showed what else he had in his kit bag, grubbering for Dylan Farrell to double the lead, the calls for him to be handed a NSW Origin jumper sure to grow louder.

Already playing under the pressure of an ASADA investigation hanging over their heads, Cronulla's players had every right to drop their bundle.

But they stuck to the task and came up with a reply via Michael Gordon, who picked up a bouncing ball after Todd Carney had beaten three defenders in a swivelling run near the line.

Reynolds added a penalty goal after the halftime siren, a kick which eventually proved the difference between the two teams.

The Sharks lost Luke Lewis to an ankle injury 12 minutes into the second half, and the Rabbitohs looked like they had kicked away via Nathan Merritt before the hour mark only for the try to be denied because of an obvious Bryson Goodwin obstruction.

Ryan's try added to the Rabbitohs' frustration as did another no-try video referee ruling, this time Reynolds denied as Issac Luke pulled back the marker in the lead-up.

McGuire still 'sad' about Malthouse

Trouble at Collingwood ... Mick Malthouse and Eddie McGuire. Source: Colleen Petch / News Limited

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has expressed his sadness over the breakdown of his relationship with former Magpies' coach Mick Malthouse, but maintains he has no regrets about the way he ended the premiership coach's 12-year tenure with the Pies.

In a candid interview with Mike Sheahan in the first episode of Open Mike of 2013, McGuire was asked about the contentious deal that was to see Nathan Buckley replace Malthouse as senior coach at the end of the 2011 season.

The arrangement that would have seen Malthouse take on the newly created role of director of coaching ended in acrimony when the 2010 premiership coach severed ties with the club before taking on the job late in 2011 as planned.

"I'm very sad, to be honest. It (the friendship) will come back," McGuire said of his strained relationship with Malthouse.

"I think Mick is a person who really generates energy off the 'us against them' and the 'them' is Collingwood now.

"Personally, I was a bit disappointed that there was such enmity last year and both sides got emotional at stages because we were so close.

"Mick's contribution was profound at the Collingwood Football Club and when the time is right he will be made a life member, definitely a hall of famer, and a legend of the club.

"I'll be driving that because his contribution was fantastic. Things will sort themselves out."

The relationship appeared beyond repair last year when the pair exchanged barbs in the media with McGuire declaring Malthouse "wouldn't have a friend at Collingwood" after the former coach publicly questioned Buckley's game plan.

After spending 2012 in various media roles Malthouse went on to replace Brett Ratten in September after the Blues champion was sacked as Carlton coach.

"Mick has a view why this all came about and I know exactly why it came about from my point of view," McGuire said.

"Everything we did was for the good of Mick in that situation.

"He wanted to coach … good, and it probably refreshed him. He'll be out there and a great coach this year, but I have absolutely zero worries about what I did with Mick Malthouse.

"The only regret I have is it didn't pan out, that Mick didn't stay to be the position I wanted him to be at Collingwood."

India scrape home in nail-biter

Pumped ... Virat Kohli top-scored for India on day five. Source: Aijaz Rahi / AAP

India won the third Test in Mohali but not before receiving an almighty scare from a brave Australian effort late on day five.

3rd Test - Punjab Cricket Association Stadium

14 March 2013 - Day 5, Session 3

India 2nd Innings

M. Dhoni 18 28 3 0 64.29
R. Jadeja 8 5 2 0 160
M. Starc 10.3 1 51 0 4.86

The hosts looked to have the result in the bag heading into the final session, with 103 runs required and 10 wickets in hand, but a stellar bowling effort from the Aussie bowlers meant the home side only reached the target with 15 balls remaining.

Peter Siddle was most impressive for the tourists, picking up the crucial wicket of Virat Kohli (34), while Xavier Doherty nabbed the wicket of Murali Vijay and Nathan Lyon dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara.

Sachin Tendulkar looked like he would get India home until he was run out by David Warner for 21.

That brought Ravindra Jadeja to the crease, who combined with captain MS Dhoni to knock off the remaining runs with a series of impressive boundaries.

Earlier, a rearguard action from Australia's tail-enders helped set India 133 for victory.

Mitchell Starc again impressed with the bat, being the last man out for 35, while No.11 Xavier Doherty finished not out on 18.

The day began poorly for the tourists, with nightwatchman Nathan Lyon falling early to Pragyan Ojha, but the real blow came when skipper Michael Clarke was dismissed for 18. Replays suggested Jadeja had bowled a no-ball, but the decision stood.

Phil Hughes was Australia's best batsman, making his way to 69 before being on the end of a poor lbw decision.

Jadeja was the best of India's bowlers, finishing with figures of 3-35.

Shikhar Dhawan received the man-of-the-match award for his brilliant knock of 187 on Test debut.

'Heads are going to go at Bombers'

The Bombers ... trying to focus on their opening-round clash. Source: Tim Carrafa / News Limited

Veteran AFL journalist Mike Sheahan has warned that the drugs scandal that has rocked the code - and wider sporting community in Australia - will see heads roll at Essendon.

3:15 PM

Melbourne Cricket Ground

All times are listed in EDT

The Bombers are under three investigations for supplements that players took in the 2012 AFL season.

The ASADA investigation will take months, while the AFL is also looking into what happened at Essendon and the club itself has commissioned an independent review into what chairman David Evans has called "irregular practices".

Sheahan, speaking on the return of FOX FOOTY's On The Couch on Monday night, said the opening of the AFL season this weekend provided a break, but not the end of the issue for the game.

"We've got a diversion, it's definitely not behind us," Sheahan said.

"This has dented the AFL reputation more than (anything) I can remember.

"There's no doubt there's been a serious breakdown in governance at the Essendon Football Club," Sheahan added.

"I think some heads are going to go (at Essendon).

"The reputation of the game and specifically the footy club has been badly hurt in this.

"And it shouldn't happen. Whatever the substances this is shocking in the literal sense of the word.

"When you pick up the paper and you read that a group of young blokes have been taken off site to have injections administered to the abdomen with a supplement we're not sure about, I am staggered that nobody in the football department, the medical department, the coaches, parents or players blew the whistle on that.

"I am staggered it went on as long as it did."

Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy said the situation at Essendon would likely lead to a change in practices across the competition.

"To me the issue is 40 injections into the gut is a no-go zone," Healy said.

"If anything comes out of this I think we're going to understand that if you have an injection in football it's potentially to allow you to play at your best, not to improve your best.

"Because that is what this supplement program is all about. It's making you a better player than you otherwise were.

"If you have to become a battery hen to become a top-line AFL footballer then we've lost our way.

"The information will go from one club to the next club to the next club so there's no net gain. Everyone will be doing 40 injections and all we're doing is diminishing our brand."

Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen has taken a shock win in the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, outlasting his rivals as their tyres full apart under them.

The fun-loving Finn beat Ferrari's Fernando Alonso by 12 seconds, with reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel completing the podium in third.

It was a poor day for the Aussies on home soil, Mark Webber finishing sixth with a fighting drive with no KERS and a poor start, while Daniel Ricciardo retired his Toro Rosso with a broken exhaust after he too endured a horror start.

Raikkonen wasn't thought to be a contender pre-race, but Lotus's two-stop strategy proved crucial to their success.

"It was a pretty nice race, not so difficult," the enigmatic Finn said on the podium. "[Two stops] was our plan before the race and I was pretty confident that the tyres would be okay."

Second-placed Alonso conceded he was disappointed not to be standing on the top step of the podium, but is happy to finally start a season on a positive note.

"We had a very difficult start to the year two years ago and last year, but this year is different," he said. It was a fantastic race for us, fighting all through the race.

"The race was action every lap. I personally enjoy, but at the end I was a bit sad not to win the race."

Vettel's lack of pace was the big surprise. After dominating virtually all of the running throughout the weekend, he simply didn't have the speed to challenge for victory.

"I'm not worried, we have to admit sometimes people are faster," Vettel said post-race. "It's a long season, long way ahead of us. Good points to start."

Webber's hopes took an early blow, making another poor start to drop from second on the grid to be in seventh into the first corner.

New Sauber signing Nico Hulkenberg didn't even make the start, the team withdrawing the German's car just before the start with fuel system problems.

The tale of the early laps was one of tyre woes, with none of the leading contenders able to keep Pirelli's supersoft compound alive for much longer than a handful of laps.

Webber was the first of the frontrunners to blink, enduring a slow stop to change to medium compound tyres on lap five.

Left trapped behind Jenson Button's struggling McLaren, Red Bull switched his strategy and brought him in for an early second stop on lap 17.

Vettel led the early running with Massa and Alonso in hot pursuit, before they too were all hit with graining issues. Vettel pitted on lap seven, followed by Massa on lap eight, then Alonso and the flying Raikkonen on lap nine.

This left Hamilton and Rosberg in front, stretching the maximum laps out of their soft tyres before relenting on laps 14 and 15 respectively.

The Mercedes stops handed the lead to returning Force India driver Adrian Sutil. The German, starting on medium tyres, ran all the way until lap 21 before pitting.

Vettel flew up to the back of Sutil soon after his pitstop but that was as far as he got. The charge wore out his new rubber, forcing him to follow the Force India into the pits.

The pair emerged in the same order but behind Alonso's Ferrari, the Spaniard having made an early second stop to undercut the pair.

As the leaders all started to make their second round of stops Raikkonen started to show the Lotus team's hand, staying out on his second set of tyres until lap 34.

From there, the Finn would make it to the end of the race without stopping again, setting up a surprising victory in the championship's opening round.

Alonso fought valiantly, though, stringing together a sequence of fast laps on either side of his third and final pitstop in pursuit of the black Lotus.

But Raikkonen put a late exclamation mark on his team's strategy, illustrating just how comfortably his tyres were lasting by posting the fastest lap of the race on lap 56 of 58.

Vettel was powerless to do anything but cruise to third, after fighting his way past Sutil soon after their second stops.

Massa, who at one point looked a dark horse to win the race, faded to fourth, the Ferrari team's strategy of running a short middle stint for the Brazilian backfiring.

Fifth on his Mercedes debut was Lewis Hamilton, who held off Webber for sixth, while mid-race hero Sutil salvaged seventh ahead of teammate Paul di Resta.

Rounding out the pointscorers were McLaren's Jenson Button and Raikkonen's teammate Romain Grosjean.

The other Australian in the race Daniel Ricciardo, had a fraught day, dropping to last place on the opening lap, eventually retiring with 19 laps to go.

The threat of rain through the race failed to materialise, with little spits of water hitting falling on parts of the track mid-race.

Raikkonen's win could be a good omen for the season ahead. It's the first time the Lotus team has won the opening race since 2006 - when they were known as Renault - and the first time a Lotus has won the opening race of the season since 1978. On both occasions, they won the title.

The championship's next stop is in just one week's time at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia.

Queensland sneak into Shield final

Match-winner ... James Hopes took four wickets for Queensland. Source: Kerris Berrington / News Limited

Veteran all-rounder James Hopes has ripped through West Australia's middle and lower order to help secure Queensland a spot in next week's Sheffield Shield final.

SHEF - WACA Ground

14 March 2013 - Day 3, Session 3

Western Australia 2nd Innings

R. Duffield 6 7 1 0 85.71

With the match slightly in Queensland's favour going into the last session, Hopes (4-42) put the result beyond doubt with three quick wickets to wrap up the innings.

The Warriors had been some kind of show of meeting Tasmania in the final when requiring 171 runs off a minimum of 37 overs in the last session with five wickets in hand.

But when top-scorer Mike Hussey departed for 37 off the bowling of Ryan Harris the writing was on the wall for the home side, who meekly surrendered thereafter to finish 120 runs shy of the victory target.

Earlier the Bulls put themselves in with a good chance of claiming the win when they moved from 6-179 and a lead of just 116 runs at the start of the day to 9-336 before declaring heading into lunch.

Fast bowlers Michael Neser (77) and Harris (54 no) combined brilliantly for a quick-fire wicket 86-run partnership;  Harris remaining undefeated after clubbing six fours and two sixes in his electrifying knock.

Harris was man of the match for his important innings and eight wickets for the fixture.

Hopes was suitably delighted with the result and was positive about heading down to Hobart.

"We asked ourselves this morning whether we had one more trick up our sleeves and just talking amongst the boys we said to ourselves we think we owe it to ourselves to have one last crack at this,'' Hopes said.

"It's going to be flat (the wicket) and I think the weather down there is forecast to be pretty good for the week and we will get a couple of our bowlers back which will make selection interesting.''

The home side will lament the missed opportunity to have chased a far more modest target, an abject day ending in poor fashion when Burt Cockley stepped on his wicket for the final dismissal.

"It's obviously a disappointing day, we've been outplayed today in every way," said Warriors captain Adam Voges.

"We will look at every area now and just assess where everyone is."

Phoenix stall Glory's finals charge

Perth Glory's finals chances are hanging by a thread after suffering a shock 2-1 loss to A-League cellar dwellers Wellington Phoenix at nib Stadium on Sunday.

Glory would have soared into fifth spot with victory over the last-placed Phoenix.

2 Central Coast 25 14 6 5 23 48
3 Victory 25 12 5 8 3 41

7 Brisbane 25 8 5 12 0 29
8 Perth 25 8 4 13 -3 28
9 Heart 25 8 3 14 -6 27
10 Wellington 26 7 6 13 -17 27

Instead, it was Wellington who took the spoils, with goals to Paul Ifill and Stein Huysegems consigning Glory to just their second loss under interim coach Alistair Edwards.

"The other results this weekend went our way. But we couldn't capitalise on the fact we had a chance to get into the six, which is disappointing,'' Alistair Edwards said.

"But there's still six points up for grabs, so it's still game on.''

Glory's Japanese recruit Ryo Nagai pulled a goal back in the 75th minute, but Phoenix custodian Glen Moss pulled off a crucial save in the 94th minute to deny Perth an equaliser.

With just two rounds remaining, Perth trail sixth-placed Newcastle by three points, although the Jets only have one game to play.

Perth round out the season with tough matches against Melbourne Victory (away) and Adelaide United (home).

Star striker Shane Smeltz and defender Michael Thwaite will miss Saturday's clash with the Victory due to international duties, but their opponents will be without Socceroos trio Archie Thompson, Marco Rojas and Mark Milligan.

Glory couldn't find a way past Moss in the opening half, with the Phoenix goalkeeper pulling off a string of fine saves to deny goalward-bound strikes from Matias Cordoba, Shane Smeltz and Liam Miller.

Wellington struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, but a penetrating run down the right from in-form striker Jeremy Brockie led to the first goal in the 35th minute.

Although Brockie's shot from a tough angle was deflected away off the boot of Glory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic, Ifill pounced on the rebound to tap home the goal.

Wellington doubled their lead in the 67th minute courtesy of a beautifully-timed header from Huysegems.
But there was hope for Perth when Nagai rose above Manny Muscat to score a header of his own.

However, Moss saved the day for Wellington at the death, blocking a desperate strike from Travis Dodd in the fourth minute of extra time to secure a rare away win for Wellington.

Interim Phoenix coach Chris Greenacre praised the efforts of Moss, and said the result was sweet revenge for Wellington.

"Perth ended our playoff run last year, so we had a little bit of something on the game,'' Greenacre said.

"Even though we have nothing to play for, it was important we came in and gave a real performance. The boys certainly did that.''

Hughes, Aussies hold on in Mohali

Resurgent ... Hughes made his highest score of the series on day four. Source: Manan Vatsyayana / AAP

Phillip Hughes was the unlikely saviour after another mixed day for Australia had them hanging on for dear life at stumps on day four of the fourth Test in Mohali.

3rd Test - Punjab Cricket Association Stadium

14 March 2013 - Day 4, Session 3

Australia 2nd Innings

P. Hughes 53 68 9 1 77.94
N. Lyon 4 17 1 0 23.53
R. Ashwin 7 2 25 0 3.57

The tourists finished play on 3-75, with Nathan Lyon (4 not out) joining Hughes (53 not out) at the crease as a nightwatchman after Steve Smith (5) fell late in the final session.

Smith and Hughes were elevated up the order due to what is apparently a back injury to skipper Michael Clarke, who had several stints off the field while Australia were bowling.

The Aussies were buoyant after bowling India out for 499, a lead of 91 runs, but that joy quickly disappeared after David Warner was out caught behind from the bowling of Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the first over of the innings.

Kumar also picked up the wicket of Ed Cowan (8).

Earlier, Murali Vijay brought up his second century in as many matches after emerging from the shadow of fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan, who fell to Nathan Lyon in the second over of the day.

Vijay was eventually removed by Mitchell Starc, and the Aussie left-armer also picked up the wicket of MS Dhoni in the same over.

The hero with the ball for Australia was Peter Siddle, who finished with figures of 5-71, while part-timer Steve Smith picked up the big wicket of Sachin Tendulkar.

More to come...
