Victory cling on to break Heart

Melbourne Victory used Melbourne Heart as a stepladder to climb a little closer to the A-League peak, with a pulsating 2-1 derby win at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

A delightfully worked first half goal to Archie Thompson and Mark Milligan's second half penalty capped second-placed Victory's win as they closed within three points of league leaders Central Coast Mariners.

Victory goalkeeper Nathan Coe was perhaps his side's most important player - three huge first half saves denying the Heart as a frenetic opening 45 minutes swung in the balance.

With the Heart menacing early, Coe was called into action inside six minutes to deny fullback Jeremy Walker.

He produced a gem of a reflex stop from Eli Babalj on 13 minutes, then for the pick of the trio, a diving save high to his left to stop a goalbound Golgol Mebrahtu free-kick just before halftime.

His magnificence between the sticks allowed those outfield to work the necessary magic - midfielder Marcos Flores' superb turn and chip freeing Thompson on 29 minutes to score and put the Victory ahead.

Both sides had excellent patches of play in the first half, before Victory were handed clear advantage early in the second when Heart midfielder Jonathan Germano manhandled Flores in the box off the ball and was caught out by referee Strebre Delovski.

Milligan hammered home the penalty to the delight of the majority of the 41,203 crowd.

But with the Victory seemingly in control, a neat individual goal from Heart winger David Williams in which he beat two defenders meant a nervous last 17 minutes for the home side.

Heart's best chance of an equaliser was again created by the lively Williams, whose excellent cross on 76 minutes was headed just wide by Mebrahtu.

Heart goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne also produced two fine saves late in the match to stop the Victory going further ahead.

Mixed night for Quade in Reds trial

Mixed night ... Quade Cooper got a trial game under his belt as the Reds beat the Blues. Source: Patrick Hamilton / AAP

Quade Cooper displayed many of his sublime skills but finished red-faced in his Super Rugby trial return as Queensland outlasted a spirited young Blues outfit on Saturday night.

The Reds scored seven close-range tries to five by the physical Blues to win an entertaining pre-season cobweb-duster 41-35 at a packed Toowoomba Sports Ground.

Part-time boxer Cooper mixed mostly good, with some bad and ugly in his 60 minutes on the field in his only hit-out before Queensland's Super Rugby campaign kicks off against the Brumbies in Canberra in a fortnight.

In his first rugby appearance in five months, the Wallabies playmaker set up a long-range break with his first touch of the ball - an inside pop pass to Digby Ioane - and also produced some signature jinking steps and flick passes.

But his last two acts on the field left a sour taste in Cooper's mouth as he was one of many barrelled by powerful winger Albert Nikoro and then stripped of the ball just minutes later.

Both mistakes led to Blues tries as John Kirwan's young team stormed back into the contest to trail 29-28 at the three-quarter break.

Cooper's goalkicking, given the duties for his sole pre-season trial ahead of sharpshooter Mike Harris, was more rusty - slotting just two from five.

Harris immediately showed he was the man for the job by landing one from touch as the Reds closed out the topsy-turvy match.

The signs were promising for the Aucklanders who are attempting to rebuild under new coach Kirwan following a forgettable 2012.

The Blues had a 14-0 lead by the first drinks break with prop Angus Ta'avao and lock Ronald Raaymakers both bustling their way over after set pieces near the line.

But Queensland's pack muscled up to run in three close-range tries to forwards Adam Wallace-Harrison, James Hanson and Radike Samo in the last 12 minutes of the half.

Wingers Rod Davies and Luke Morahan were among the Reds best performers while halfback Nick Frisby and young flanker Liam Gill impressed after the break to build up the 29-14 advantage.

Eels tighten defence in Knights win

Defence ... Parramatta thrashed a young Knights outfit. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

New Parramatta coach Ricky Stuart has demanded his troops get physical in defence this season and the young Eels made an encouraging start in a 46-10 NRL trial win over an inexperienced Newcastle in Armidale.

The Eels were the worst defensive team in the league last year and slumped to the wooden spoon.

But Stuart is determined to turn things around and has spent the pre-season trying to put a sting into Parramatta's tackling efforts.

Eels captaincy candidate Reni Maitua scored a try and played strongly in the comfortable victory in front of 5023 fans, while exciting lock forward prospect Ken Edwards put his hand up for a first grade spot by bagging a double and collecting the man-of-the-match award.

Utility forward Taulima Tautai was the pick of Parramatta's NRL talent playing at prop and Luke Kelly did well with his audition in the five-eighth jersey.

Kelly set up a couple of tries, as he looks to partner Chris Sandow in the halves to start the year.

Another to stand out for Stuart, was his hooker Nathan Smith - who is vying with Matt Keating to start the year in the No.9 shirt.

Smith said Stuart has instructed his players to go hard at each other at training and believes the emphasis on defence paid off in the opening trial.

"Everything we've been doing is really physical and technique based and we've been getting stuck into each other at training,'' Smith told AAP.

"Last year we were a bit poor in that aspect and we needed to really get our bodies in front and dominate the ruck and the edges.

"We really needed to dominate the whole game defensively and I think we did that.

"It's only very early, the first trial - but the things we didn't get right last year seem to be fixing themselves and we're on the right track.''

Smith and the Eels' NRL talent played about 50 minutes, before Stuart injected some of his fringe players and younger talent.

Parramatta led 26-0 at halftime and were up 36-0 when the big names left the field.

Fullback Peter Mata'utia was the only Newcastle player with NRL experience, but the rookies snuck in for two late consolation tries.

Smith believes he's put himself in a good position to push Keating for a starting berth come round one.

"I thought my games at the back end of last year were pretty good too. If I'm not No.9 I'd love to be 14 (on the bench), and just make my way through the year into the side.''

The Eels were minus stars like Sandow, Jarryd Hayne and Willie Tonga.

WA thrash Bulls in Ryobi Cup

The "bad boy'' tag had already been shed by Shaun Marsh.

However, that didn't stop the talented West Australian batsman having another go at getting into the national selectors' good books at the Gabba on Saturday.

WA posted a massive total of 4-308, before Queensland were bowled out for 198 in the 44th over of their reply.

Marsh kept statisticians - and he hopes selectors - on their toes by thrashing an unbeaten 155 for the Warriors, setting up a 110-run win.

He stroked 12 fours and six sixes - including three straight off Alister McDermott - to register the highest knock at the Gabba, second-best by a WA batsman and ninth biggest overall in domestic one-day history.

Not a bad effort for a bloke who started the summer playing Perth club cricket after his brother Mitch's ill-fated birthday celebration ensured he returned from the Perth Scorchers' Champions League campaign with his tail between his legs.

Marsh dug deep in the Big Bash League to break back into Australia's Twenty20 side against Sri Lanka this summer - and a one-day call-up against the West Indies may still be on the cards based on his heroics on Saturday.

He wasn't the only star to shine for a WA outfit that has kept their one-day final hopes alive.

Australian Twenty20 teammates Marsh (155 not out off 147 balls) and captain Adam Voges (112 off 116) put on 229 for the third wicket after WA were reeling at 2-16 in the ninth over.

It was WA's second-highest stand in domestic one-day history - just shy of their overall record of 257, also for the third wicket, set by Murray Goodwin and Mike Hussey against NSW in Perth in 2001.

And it easily eclipsed WA's 160-run third-wicket limited overs record partnership against Queensland set by Justin Langer and Chris Rogers in 2003 in Perth.

It ensured fourth-placed WA notched back-to-back bonus point wins to move to 14 points on the one-day ladder to remain a mathematical chance of making the final with one game left up their sleeve.

Third-placed Queensland (15pts) had everything to play for with a finals berth in their sights but didn't fire with the bat.

Victoria (19pts) lead the competition ahead of South Australia (18pts), who have a game in hand.

Only Nathan Reardon (58), former Australia one-day batsman Peter Forrest (40) and recalled opener Greg Moller (39) looked like taking it to a WA attack led by Nathan Coulter-Nile (3-48), left arm quick Jason Behrendorff (3-39) and promising spinner Ashton Agar (3-51).

The Warriors also looked sluggish early with the bat, crawling to 50 in the 17th over.

However, by the 25th over the Warriors had registered three figures as Voges and Marsh began to take charge.

Their 218-ball stand finally came to an end when Voges' ramp shot went awry and he was caught off Matthew Gale (3-50 off 11 overs) in the 45th over.

Voges thumped 11 fours to notch his highest domestic one-day knock.

Voges dared to dream about a one-day final ahead of their regular season finale against Tasmania on February 19.

''To be able to back up what we did against NSW (Wednesday night's 111-run win in Sydney) is really pleasing,'' he said.

''It will be a tough ask to get to the final but the pleasing thing is the way we go about everything - it is getting great results.''

Voges credited new coach Justin Langer for his recent Twenty20 international recall and Marsh's form - and attitude - reversal.

''He has changed a few things with my technique and tinkered a bit with Shaun as well - it is starting to bare some fruit,'' he said.

Aussies dominate at world sevens

Con Foley ... scores a try as Australia win their pool opener. Source: Marty Melville / AFP

Australia crushed Scotland 29-5 to complete a surprisingly dominant opening day at the world series sevens rugby tournament in Wellington.

The young side coached by Michael O'Connor eased past Portugal 24-5 and stunned Fiji 21-12 to top pool D on Friday and reverse their previous form in the International Rugby Board series.

They were knocked out in the Cup quarter-finals of the opening tournament on the Gold Coast and failed to advance beyond pool play at Dubai and Port Elizabeth.

The previously unbeaten Scots had no answer to Australia's pressure game in defence which was also effective against Fiji.

The Australians attacked the breakdowns with vigour to dominate possession and score five tries to one.

As with their first two games, their tries were shared around. Con Foley, Lewis Holland and Allan Fa'alava'au put them 17-0 clear at halftime before Jordan Tuapau and Shannon Walker completed the second-half scoring.

James Fleming crossed for a consolation for Scotland.

Both teams upset Fiji, who failed to qualify for the Cup quarter-finals for the first time in the series' history.

Australia will face the runners-up from pool A, which could potentially be New Zealand, assuming the tournament hosts win their final game against the United States and unbeaten England beat Spain.

England toppled the series-leading New Zealanders in the opening round of matches.

Joel Griffiths gets three-match ban

Suspended ... Sydney FC's Joel Griffiths will miss three matches. Source: Mark Evans / News Limited

An already-depleted Sydney FC have been hit with a fresh blow ahead of Saturday's crucial A-League match against Newcastle with striker Joel Griffiths suspended for abusing a linesman.

Griffiths was suspended on Friday evening after a review of an incident in the Sky Blues' loss to Melbourne Victory last weekend by a reconvened A-League match review panel.

The incident happened in the 89th minute of the round-18 fixture and Griffiths was charged with ''use of offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures against a match official''.

The 33-year-old faces a three-match suspension. He will serve a mandatory match suspension against the Jets and can appeal the additional two-game suspension.

Sydney FC chief executive Tony Pignata condemned Griffiths' behaviour.

''Sydney FC is disappointed with what happened late in the game last weekend against Melbourne Victory that has led to Joel Griffiths receiving a three-match suspension,'' Pignata said in a statement.

''Sydney FC prides itself on setting standards in community behaviour and we expect our players to uphold those standards and set a good example.

''Joel has shown remorse for what happened and Sydney FC will consider its options in relation to appealing the severity of the suspension.''

The A-League's match review panel usually convenes earlier in the week but it's understood they did not receive information on Griffiths' outburst until midweek.

It's not the first time Griffiths has been involved in a controversy involving match officials. He appeared to punch a linesman in the groin when playing for Newcastle in 2007, but escaped further sanction on a technicality because he received a yellow card at the time.

The suspension denies Griffiths the opportunity to play alongside brother Adam and against his other brother Ryan, in what would have been the first time three brothers had played together in an A-League fixture.

Griffiths is the fifth change forced on Sydney coach Frank Farina for the match against the fifth-placed Jets who sit two points above the Sky Blues on the A-League ladder.

Socceroo Brett Emerton (back) has been ruled out of the match with the Jets, against whom Sydney have lost twice already this season. The Sky Blues also are without Yairo Yau to international duty with Panama while defenders Fabio and Tiago Calvano are serving one-match suspensions.

Goalkeeper Ivan Necevski returns from an ankle injury to take Matthew Nash's place on the bench while Terry Antonis, Peter Triantis, Nathan Sherlock, Paul Reid and Aaron Calver have been recalled to Farina's extended 18-man squad.

Farina bemoaned his continued bad luck at training on Friday before the news of Griffiths suspension.

''It's certainly had its moments (this season). We are probably five or six down from last week but that is the reality of it - we have to live with it and just get on with it. Every day in football is a challenge,'' Farina said.

''When you are on a bit of a rollercoaster ride like we have been, it tends to stay that way. We have to continue to keep working hard, take what we have got and keep battling away.''

Cory Jane could be out for season

Sidelined ... Cory Jane will undergo surgery on his knee injury. Source: AAP

All Blacks and Hurricanes winger Cory Jane faces a long stint on the rugby sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury.

Jane faces the prospect of missing the entire 2013 Super Rugby season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee at pre-season training in Paraparaumu on Thursday.

A Hurricanes statement said the injury will require surgery.

Mark Hammett felt for the 29-year-old, who has established himself as one of the best wingers in the world in recent years.

"It is devastating for Cory to have suffered this serious injury when he was looking so strong for this season following such a successful 2012,'' Hammett said.

It is unclear when or if Jane will be fit enough in time to add to his 41 Test caps.

All square between Roar, Mariners

Contest ... Mariners' Michael McGlinchey (R) protects the ball from pursuing Roar players. Source: AAP

Brisbane Roar put some overdue spark into their title defence before Central Coast marksman Daniel McBreen salvaged another dramatic 2-2 draw at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

The spirited Roar came from a goal down to lead 2-1 and were poised to inflict just the Mariners' third defeat when McBreen equalised in the 80th minute with his 14th goal of the season.

The scoreline was a repeat of the clubs' memorable 2010-11 grand final when Brisbane came from 2-0 down with two goals in the final three minutes of extra-time before winning on penalties.

8 Sydney 18 6 2 10 -9 20
9 Perth 18 5 4 9 -1 19
10 Wellington 18 4 5 9 -11 17

The home side again looked like celebrating thanks to a stirring second-half performance against the pace-setting competition favourites.

Golden boot Besart Berisha rediscovered his mojo with a double and new Dutch recruit Stef Nijland made an immediate impact in a 30-minute cameo just 38 hours after flying into Brisbane.

Berisha, who has struggled for form in 2012-13 much like the defending champions, produced two quality goals to earn man-of-the-match honours.

The Albanian international headed home a smart cross from captain Thomas Broich in the 47th minute and then put the Roar in the lead by finishing the best goal of the entertaining encounter, sparked by pin-point passes from Nijland and Shane Stefanutto.

With young midfielder Luke Brattan continuing to shine, the Roar overcame an indisciplined and sloppy start with a confident display after the break to reinvigorate their campaign.

It had been a farcical start for seventh-placed Brisbane, who conceded the opening goal in the eighth minute due to a Matt Jurman defensive error when they were needlessly down to 10 men.

Replacement Ben Halloran, prevented from taking the field for an injured Massimo Murdocca due to an administrative error, was forced to watch from the sideline as Michael McGlinchey made the most of his gift opportunity in the box.

The Mariners looked in control of the first half and had missed a prime chance to double their lead just before the break when McBreen's close-range shot was smartly saved by Michael Theo.

Jurman was dragged at halftime and replaced by Jack Hingert in a backline reshuffle which saw Ivan Franjic team with Jade North in his Roar debut.

My Shield form irrelevant: Doherty

Xavier Doherty ... hasn't played Shield cricket since November. Source: Phil Hillyard / News Limited

Tasmanian tweaker Xavier Doherty's first-class record this season of two wickets at an average of 80 isn't going to strike fear into the hearts of India's batsmen.

But Doherty, who fought off a challenge from fellow left-arm spinner Steve O'Keefe for a spot in Australia's 17-man squad named on Thursday, says his recent form in limited-overs international cricket has left him in a confident mood ahead of the four-Test tour.

Michael Clarke, Shane Watson, Jackson Bird, Ed Cowan, Xavier Doherty, Moises Henriques,  Phil Hughes, Mitchell Johnson, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner

Doherty's hopes of a recall, after playing in the Brisbane and Adelaide Tests in his debut series against England in November-December 2010, rest largely on just how spin-friendly the pitches of Chennai, Hyderabad, Mohali and Delhi turn out to be.

Offspinner Nathan Lyon is a certainty for the Test XI and spin-bowling allrounder Glenn Maxwell is circling for a possible Test debut, as is seam-bowling allrounder Moises Henriques.

"Growing up at (Hobart's) Bellerive Oval, you could probably understand the reason my bowling average (119 wickets at 44.78 in 51 first-class matches) is a little more than what most international spinners are,'' Doherty said on Thursday.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Get Adobe Flash Player

"If anyone had seen the wickets that we've served up at Bellerive earlier this season, you'd probably understand why I've only got two wickets so far.

"They're just trying to pick people who are in form. Stevie O'Keefe has bowled well over the last few weeks as well (taking 4-55 and 4-47 for NSW in last week's Sheffield Shield game against Western Australia).

"Having not played a Shield game for a while (since November), I guess my Shield form almost becomes irrelevant.

"They (selectors) have probably just looked at the last eight weeks.

"Having not had the chance to bowl the red ball, all I could do was bowl as well as I could in the form of the game that I was playing."

Doherty's recent form has been excellent, grabbing 1-30 and 2-21 in Australia's Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka after picking up 3-21 off eight overs in the fifth one-day international against Sri Lanka in Hobart on January 23.

"The best way to answer my critics is to put in and perform,'' Doherty said.

"But that's not the over-riding motivation for doing well. It's the chance to win some games for Australia.

"Playing at this level, you do get your knockers but that's just part of it."

Clutch ... Michael Bevan plays one of the finest one-day innings against the West Indies. Source:News Limited

There have been plenty of classic clashes between Australia and West Indies, from the famous tied Test of 1960 to Michael Bevan's last-ball four in 1996.

What's your favourite Australia v West Indies ODI moment?

Bevan's heroics on New Year's Day in 1996 are sure to live long in the memory of many an Aussie fan, but was it the greatest moment in a one-dayer between the men from Down Under and the Calypso Kings?

Is Dwayne Bravo's screamer to remove Australia's most devastating opening batsman Adam Gilchrist at the top of your list? Or does Jerome Taylor's hat-trick in the 2006 Champions Trophy trump his countryman's effort?

Meet the EPLÂ’s new Solskjaer

Super sub ... Reading's Adam Le Fondre. Source:AAP

There are worse monikers to wear than 'super sub'. And although Reading's Adam Le Fondre wants to make a name for himself as a 90 minute player, he's been creating more than enough headlines for his late heroics in recent weeks.

Two match-winning performances by The Royals' No.9 has seen late, late drama for the relegation battlers against big-name opposition. Le Fondre scored twice after 87 minutes to steal a draw against Chelsea on Thursday morning (EDT), to back up his six-minute brace against Newcastle United off the bench earlier this month.

These late cameos are doing the 26-year-old no harm as he tries to show he can bring his goal scoring pedigree from the lower division to the Barclays Premier League.

"I have a role to play in the team and I have to accept it. That's how it is at the moment, but obviously I want to start games every week," Le Fondre said after the Newcastle game.

"I have to bide my time because we are playing a different formation. I've just got to wait and take my chance when it comes. Hopefully playing like this will get me another start."

Whether he wants the mantle or not, there's no doubt about the need for a vital injection off the bench. And haven't we seen some great ones through the years?

Ole Gunner Solskjaer – Sir Alex Ferguson's 'Baby Faced Assassin' from a decade ago – is the most famous the league has seen. The Norwegian striker sat behind the likes of Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham and Ruud van Nistelrooy in the pecking order. But he played his part, too, most famously in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich. Indeed, 29 of his 126 goals coming off the pine.

Another  Norwegian, Tore Andre Flo, also carved his niche as a famous super sub, scoring 13 times in 69 appearances for Chelsea off the bench.

The original super sub was Liverpool's David Fairclough, who scored 55 goals for Liverpool from 1973-1983, with 18 of them coming off the bench - 21 in the final quarter.

Australia's most famous moment off the bench is Tim Cahill, who scored twice as Australia beat Japan 3-1 in Kaiserslauten in 2006, and current rivals for the super sub title in the EPL include Javier Hernandez and Edin Dzeko.

Just don't tell Manchester City striker Dzeko.

"I will never be a super-sub, I want to play," he said after scoring twice off the bench against West Brom earlier this season.

I was jealous of Roar: Flores

Happy as Larry ... Marcos Flores loves playing under Ange Postecoglou. Source: David Crosling / AAP

Melbourne Victory midfielder Marcos Flores admits he used to be jealous every time he came up against Ange Postecoglou's champion Brisbane Roar team.

P W D L GD Pts
1 Central Coast 18 11 5 2 17 38
2 Victory 18 10 3 5 3 33
3 Western Sydney 18 10 2 6 8 32
4 Adelaide 18 10 2 6 4 32
5 Newcastle 18 6 4 8 -8 22
6 Heart 18 6 3 9 -2 21
7 Brisbane 18 6 2 10 -1 20
8 Sydney 18 6 2 10 -9 20
9 Perth 18 5 4 9 -1 19
10 Wellington 18 4 5 9 -11 17

Now he is coached by Postecoglou, Flores believes the Victory are growing into an outfit capable of emulating their coach's deeds at the Roar - and giving him an A-League championship three-peat.

"We are improving. You can see from the first week we are making steps forward every week,'' Flores said.

"Even if for a couple of weeks we didn't get the three points, we were improving and improving and improving.

"I feel so proud to be honest. So proud of my teammates, so proud of our group because every team wants to improve, and we are doing it.''

Catch all your A-League news here!

When playing for Adelaide United, Flores admits he looked longingly at how the Roar moved the ball under Postecoglou, and admired the attacking style he entrenched at the back-to-back champions.

Flores' move to the Victory after a year playing in China and Postecoglou's shift from the Roar to the Victory has united them - and the 27-year-old Argentine couldn't be happier.

"I was so jealous when I saw him and Brisbane when I was playing at Adelaide,'' Flores admits.

"More than anything I wanted to be under him, to be part of this philosophy - the way he drives the team.

"I have a lot of respect (for him). He is one of the important reasons why I came to the club.''

After a slow start with the Victory, Flores is moving towards the sort of form which won him the competition's player of the year honours with Adelaide in 2010-11.

His spike in form has coincided with the Victory's.

The Victory are unbeaten in their past four matches, and have lost just twice in their past 14 to move ominously into the top two.

Their Melbourne derby on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium against the Heart looms as critical, with third-placed Western Sydney and fourth-placed Adelaide United just a point behind the Victory and playing each other this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Victory have signed teenage centre-half Nick Ansell, versatile Leigh Broxham and reserve goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas to new extended contracts.

Ansell and Broxham have agreed to three-year deals, while Thomas will stay with the club until the end of the 2014-15 season.

The fuse has been well and truly lit for what should be an explosive rematch between the long-time rivals.

'The Man' took bragging rights when the pair met back in 2009, but it wasn't without controversy, with many claiming Geale should have been awarded the win.

In typical fashion, Mundine has dominated the headlines in the lead-up to the rematch, questioning Geale's Aboriginal heritage, engaging in some heated words with journalist Paul Kent and claiming racial bias against him during his rugby league career.

And at Tuesday's weigh-in, in which Geale came in slightly heavier, Mundine blew a bubble gum bubble in his opponent's face.

The normally mild-mannered Geale couldn't resist a few verbal jabs of his own, admitting he would love nothing more than to send Mundine into retirement.

We bring you all the build-up before delivering a blow-by-blow account of the fight from 9.30pm (EDT).

Portugal ... Garrett McNamara rides what could prove to be the largest wave ever ridden. Source:AP

The northern hemisphere's winter has historically been a bumper season for big-wave hunters.

It reached a pinnacle on Monday when Hawaiian Garrett McNamara possibly broke his own Guinness World Record with a ride on a wave some are claiming was 100ft, or about 30 metres.

A photograph of the ride started appearing on Facebook on Monday, and the footage has now been published.

It shows McNamara being towed by a jetski onto a monstrous lump off Nazare, Portugal, the same beach where he set the original record of 78ft, or 23.7m, in 2011.

"We were surfing in zones we haven't surfed, so it was a little overwhelming," McNamara told surfertoday.com.

"Personally, it was very challenging. You just have to stay in the moment, stay focused on what you're doing. We're really comfortable here, but some of those waves..."

Nazare is a deep-water beach, which funnels storm swells that were originally generated in the north Atlantic.

A crew of similarly courageous surfers enjoyed the same swell in Ireland on the weekend.

The McNamara footage is heavily edited, and shows snippets of rides that vary between impressive and terrifying. At one stage, one of the jetski riders meant to be out there to save the surfers in case of trouble is blown off his machine by a broken wave.

Response to the footage has been mostly amazement, although one observer at Surfer magazine's forum on the topic wasn't so impressed.

"Talk about a mush burger," he said, referring to the way McNamara stayed on the safe shoulder of the wave, which didn't break properly anyway.

Earlier this month Hawaiian Shane Dorian and a couple of European big-wave specialists rode the same beach, in slightly smaller conditions, but without the aid of jetskis.

"It was super challenging, really gnarly," Dorian said. "This wave is like a big blown-up sandbar beachbreak. It's really exciting and challenging. It was awesome. The wave breaks wherever it wants. As far as intensity and power goes, it's like anywhere. The waves I saw today were enormous."

Three strikes stay after drugs summit

The AFL will close a self-reporting loophole but has backed its three-strikes policy after Wednesday's drugs summit.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

AFL bosses, club CEOs, the AFL Players Association, police and medical experts met today for nine hours to review the league's controversial illegal drugs policy.

The summit was prompted by Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert speaking out at a CEOs conference late last year over his concerns about the rising use of illegal drugs by players.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

A working party will be formed to review the drugs policy each year, starting when the results of drug tests in 2012 are released.

Those numbers are not yet known but Demetriou has warned there will be a "spike" in positive tests.

The working party's first recommendation will be to close the loophole that allows players to avoid a strike against their name by dobbing themselves in.

Although one club is believed to have had 10 incidents of six players self-reporting last year, Demetriou said exploitation of the loophole wasn't rampant.

However, he conceded it had the potential to be exploited.

"Everybody acknowledged, including the players, that if there is an area of self-notification that can be closed then we will (do that)," Demetriou said.

"The general concensus is we can tighten up, that has got potential to be exploited.

"I'm pretty certain what I heard today about the self-notification that it's something we can improve pretty quickly."

But Demetriou said there was overall support for the three-strikes policy - under which positive drug tests are not made public until a player tests positive for a third time.

"We have got external experts reinforcing to us, including Victoria Police and Federal Police, what an outstanding illicit drugs policy we have," Demetriou said.

"It's not without its flaws.

"We have opened ourselves up to other improvements."

The working party will consist of three club representatives - Pert, Essendon CEO Ian Robson and Gold Coast president Travis Auld, plus a club doctor, the AFLPA and external experts

Demetriou said other key findings included a commitment to provide clubs with more information.

Pert suggested he would push for clubs to be better informed to help players with drug issues - under the current policy only the club doctor is informed after a second positive test. But AFLPA boss Matt Finnis was adamant players would not budge on the issue of confidentiality.

"The players remain committed to the policy because they feel ownership of the policy. And the players remain committed to the policy and the key pillars of the policy that we believe are integral to its success and that is the welfare of the players and confidentiality," Finnis said.

"We believe the policy successful in helping players who make bad decisions alter their behaviour."

Pert said clubs were now much better informed about the drug culture that affected their players.

"We don't know the exact numbers (of how many players are using drugs) but every CEO is concerned about what's happening now and what potentially can happen in the future," he said.

"We had presentations today about young people in that 18-21 year age bracket, taking illicit drugs is just a big part of their lives and obviously our players fall into that demographic and a lot of their friends outside the club lead that sort of lifestyle."

After the summit the AFL medical officers association released a statement supporting the three-strikes policy.

"The use of illicit drugs is primarily a health and social issue and is best managed through a medical model based on counselling, education and treatment of the underlying mental health and addiction problems," executive officer Dr Hugh Seward said.

"The current code provides an appropriate balance between this medical model and a the more punitive approach after a third offence.

"Illicit drug use is a major social issue amongst young members of our society and AFL footballers encounter these problems on a regular basis.

"The AFL Players Association accept that the players will submit to this testing, which is rare in the sporting world (as distinct from the performance enhancing drug code that all sports are subject to through WADA). In doing this they acknowledge that AFL footballers are leaders amongst their peer groups and can set an example against illicit drug use."

Dr Seward said doctors also supported strong moves to better manage alcohol use by players.

Warriors crush Watson, NSW

Big win ... Liam Davis helps WA get off to a fast start against NSW. Source: Phil Hillyard / News Limited

Western Australia made Shane Watson's NSW comeback from injury an unhappy one as the Australian vice-captain fell cheaply and his team was crushed by 112 runs in a one day match at the SCG on Wednesday.

Watson, continuing his comeback from a calf injury suffered during the Boxing Day Test, scratched his way to six from 23 deliveries before he fell victim to debutant left-arm quick Joel Paris (1-35).

It was a disappointing night for the 31-year-old, who was struck on the arm by a short ball from Nathan Coulter-Nile (1-31) before Paris had him caught and bowled when an inside edge ricocheted off Watson's pad back to the bowler.

ODD - Sydney Cricket Ground

30 January 2013 - Day 1, Session 2

New South Wales 1st Innings

T. Copeland 21 26 1 1 80.77
D. Bollinger 5 11 0 0 45.45
H. Cartwright 2.1 0 14 2 6.46

The Blues' top order crumbled around Watson's all-too-brief stay at the crease, slumping to 3-15 as Scott Henry (3) and David Dawson (4) also stumbled chasing WA's target of 267.

NSW were eventually bowled out for a measly 155 with 29 balls remaining - giving the Warriors a bonus point victory, and their first SCG win since 1996.

After being sent in to bat, the Warriors total was built around a quickfire 77 from skipper Adam Voges, who combined with recently retired Test champion Michael Hussey (30 off 21) to boost the visitors' total and capitalise on the patient work of wicketkeeper Sam Whiteman (74 off 103).

Just as he did countless times for Australia, Hussey immediately lifted the tempo, adding 61 with Voges at a run rate of 7.3.

Earlier, Whiteman put on 73 with opener Liam Davis (39) and 87 with Voges as the Warriors built their match-winning total, which secured just their second victory of the season.

The win lifts WA out of last place, with NSW now owning that spot on the ladder following their fourth-straight defeat.

In one of the few bright spots for the home team, former Test paceman Doug Bollinger came close to picking up his second domestic hat-trick after bowling Hussey and then watching as John Rogers took a diving catch to remove Nic Maddinson (0) in successive balls.

But his hat-trick ball, a well-placed yorker, sailed harmlessly past the off-stump.

Steve Smith, considered a bolter for the Indian tour squad to be announced on Thursday, looked the most assured of the Blues batsman, scoring 30 off 33 balls before he top-edged a Michael Hogan short ball straight to Voges at short mid on.

Blues captain Stephen O'Keefe top-scored with 34 before holing out to mid off, chasing quick runs off Hogan (3-29).

WA's 19-year-old left-arm offspinner Ashton Agar continued the impressive start to his state career, following on from his Sheffield Shield debut last week, taking 2-43 from 13 overs.

League legend Ashton passes away

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 29 Januari 2013 | 18.48

Vale ... Rugby league legend and World War II hero Ferris Ashton passes away. Source: Brett Costello / News Limited

Noel Kelly was at home this afternoon when news came through that Ferris Ashton had passed away.

Ned is from the old school, rugby league's hooker of the century and as tough as any man who ever laced on a boot.

But when he started remembering the life and times of of his old mate 'Ferdie', Ned couldn't hide the emotion. "Oh, Jesus," Kelly said. "Ferdie was one of those blokes you just thought was going to be around forever.

Tough ... Ferris in action. Source: News Limited

"And you just had to like. You talk about celebrating people's lives. Yeah, it is sad but his life needs to be celebrated because he was so popular everywhere he went and he crammed so much in."

Born in Darlinghurst in 1926, he served in the Navy during World War II and after returning played 84 games for the Eastern Suburbs from 1950-1956.

He also captained Easts and was captain-coach in 1954 as well as representing NSW and Australia.

But there was even more to his story.

A middleweight boxing champion in the navy, he was also an outstanding cricketer, good enough to score a first grade century for Waverley in a game against St George in 1953.

But rugby league was his game.

In the book From Where The Sun Rises, 100 years of the Sydney Roosters, there is a tribute to Ashton that tells of his remarkable achievements and his time touring with the Kangaroos in 1952.

"We left on July 18, 1952 and got home on March 2, 1953," Ashton said in the book. "I went away as a father of an eight month old baby and he was 16 months when we got back."

And they reckon end-of-season tours these days go too long.

Ashton also toured with Australia to New Zealand in 1953, winning his place despite a dislocated collarbone.

And then there were the days on Rex Mossop's Controversy Corner where Ashton and Kelly took it in turns winding up the Moose.

"We used to give poor old Rex a turn but it was always in good fun, he used to give us some too" Kelly laughed.

His grandson Sam Atkinson added: "He ran the show, he was the boss, but he was definitely well loved and he will be sorely missed."

For over 60 years, Atkinson said, Ashton lived with his wife Patricia at 87 Allambie Rd, Allambie Heights.
Not far from Ned who is still over at Collaroy.

"But the last year or so Alzheimers kicked in and after that his health started to fail him," Atkinson added.

So the family moved him up to be with them in Port Macquarie before he passed away in hospital yesterday afternoon.

He is survived by wife Patricia, a former Miss Bondi, four children, seven grand children, four great grand children and some old mates.

Like Noel Kelly who added this:

"He was a great man and it is nice to have known him, Ferdie.

"You know, he would make you proud when he turned up each year for the Anzac Day game between St George and Easts.

"He was a real hero."

Folau to get first crack at fullback

Deep end ... Israel Folau should get the first crack at  fullback for the Waratahs. Source: Toby Zerna / News Limited

Israel Folau has revealed he's spent most of his NSW pre-season training at fullback as the Waratahs weigh up throwing their star recruit straight into the key position.

Folau says he doesn't yet have a preference on where he lines-up during Super Rugby, but believes playing in the No.15 shirt during Waratahs trial matches is the best way for him to get a handle on rugby.

The cross-code convert seems certain to at least get a run at fullback during the Waratahs' opening trial against Melbourne in Hobart on Saturday night.

Coach Michael Cheika hasn't decided on the make-up of his back three for the season proper, but wants all the candidates to be as adept at fullback as on the wing.

Cheika is desperate for attacking weapon Folau to see as much space and quality ball as possible, and combined with his excellent skills under the high ball and kicking ability, fullback might prove to be his best position.

Folau isn't making any bold statements but agrees with Cheika that time at the back will give him a speedy education on the intricacies of rugby.

"I feel fine with that (fullback). I've been training most of the time at fullback so it doesn't feel any different and I'm looking forward to the challenge on Saturday," said Folau, who never played fullback in the NRL.

"We'll see how we go in trial games but at this stage I actually have no preferences.

"Fullback is probably the best way to learn and like Cheik says, you can see everything unfolding in attack. There will be a lot of space so that will be good."

Ruck work shapes as one of the biggest adjustments for AFL defector Folau, however Cheika says his star signing seems "comfortable" with that area of the game.

Cheika named a 28-man squad devoid of most of his Wallabies for the first hit-out against the Rebels - with Test stars likely to return in time for the third and final trial against the Crusaders on February 14 at Allianz Stadium.

The new coach wants to see combinations develop and for Folau to feel relaxed and free.

"My biggest thing for him is to let him have the space and enjoy himself and not get too beat up about it all," Cheika said.

"He should have a good time. There's no competition points on the line at this stage so I want guys to get a good hit out and not get too carried away by it all."

Waratahs trial squad: Michael Alaalatoa, Richard Aho, Kotoni Ale, Ollie Atkins, Peter Betham, Wayne Borzak, Tom Carter, Cam Crawford, Israel Folau, Bernard Foley (vice captain), Grayson Hart, Michael Hodge, Luke Holmes, Rob Horne, AJ Gilbert, Tom Kingston, Matt Lucas, Brendan McKibbin (captain), Tolu Latu, Dane Maraki, Elijah Niko, Greg Peterson, Jeremy Tilse (vice captain), Lopeti Timani, Peter Samu, Will Skelton, John Ulugia, Ben Volavola.peAAP bh/imc/jms

PM XI too good for Windies

Opener ... Jono Dean celebrates 50 for the Prime Minister's XI. Source: Mark Graham / AFP

The Prime Minister's XI have snuck home against West Indies by 23 runs in a high scoring 50-over thriller in Canberra.

The PM's side rattled up 6-333 and restricted the tourists to 310 runs off 49 overs.

The West Indies looked on track to chase down the score in front of a crowd of almost 10,000 at Manuka Oval until Kieran Powell retired hurt on 92 with leg cramps.

Pakistan-born legspinner Fawad Ahmed then sparked a middle order collapse, grabbing a top edge off Darren Bravo (6) to Alex Doolan at deep square.

Dwayne Bravo (18), Kieran Pollard (2) and captain Darren Sammy (3) soon followed, leaving the visitors in an almost irrecoverable position.

Ramnaresh Sarwan (63) and Andre Russell (54) both attempted to revive the innings before both holing out to fielders in the deep.

Man of the match James Faulkner (4-54) bowled Tino Best (2) with his final ball during the penultimate over to put the visitors at 9/310, with Powell declining to come back out to bat.

Earlier in the innings Test hopeful Usman Khawaja silenced critics of his fielding by brilliantly running out opener Johnson Charles (34).

The foundations of the PM XI's total of 6/333 was built early on, with the top three batsmen Jono Dean, Khawaja and Alex Doolan all making half centuries.

ACT Comets captain Dean blitzed hit his half century off just 35 balls at the top of the order while Test hopefuls Usman Khawaja (69) and Alex Doolan (87) also starred with the bat.

Faulker also didn't hurt his chances of a call-up to the national squad with his batting performance, scoring 44 off just 28 balls.

Alister McDermott (2-63) and Ashton Turner (1-62) also chipped in with the ball for the PM's XI.

The run-chase was made all the more difficult for the West Indies with the late withdrawal of star batsman Chris Gayle before the match, who was suffering from slight back stiffness after a long flight.

Faulkner replaces injured Henriques

James Faulkner ... replaces the injured Moises Henriques in Australia's ODI squad. Source: Dale Cumming / AAP

Tasmanian allrounder James Faulkner has been called into Australia's one-day squad as replacement for the injured Moises Henriques and is in-line to make his ODI debut against the West Indies on Friday.

Faulkner joins the Australian squad for the first two ODIs against the Windies in Perth on Friday and Sunday.

The in-form Henriques has been sidelined for the two matches after undergoing minor surgery on his ongoing finger injury.

National Selector John Inverarity said Faulkner will first play for the Prime Minister's XI against the Windies on Tuesday in Canberra, before joining the Australian squad in Perth.

Faulkner has been part of Australia's ODI and T20I squads already this summer, but hasn't added to the solitary international T20 cap he collected last year.

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo insists Chris Gayle and Brad Haddin have put their ongoing feud to bed as the Prime Minister's XI prepare to host the West Indies in Canberra on Tuesday.

Sydney Sixers captain Haddin initially sparked the big row last month when he questioned Gayle's value to the winless Thunder.

Gayle used Twitter to retaliate with a tirade the next day.

However West Indies all-rounder Bravo on Monday said both his fellow countryman and Haddin had put the disagreement behind them for the Manuka Oval match on Tuesday night - Canberra's first ever day/night match.

"We are all teammates we are all friends," the West Indies vice-captain said.

"Chris is a very easy going guy, a fun loving person.

"And I was fortunate to be led by Haddin when I played for the Sixers last year. He's a lovely guy also.

"It's something they have both put behind them."

Bravo also jumped to the defence of Gayle's form, saying he was only one innings away from being back to his devastating best.

"We all know Chris is one of the best players in the world, you can't hide that, and these conditions suit him," Bravo said, referring to Gayle's 146 off 89 balls against the PM's XI three years ago.

"I know obviously he had a bad Big Bash this year but the previous seasons he did o.well with the bat. I hope that people remember that and know that he's still dangerous."

Haddin was also quick to play down the row with Gayle.

"I think it will be all good," he said.

"That was about a month ago. We're here to celebrate the PM's XI. That's not in my thoughts anymore."

Rodgers rages at misfiring Reds

Brendan Rodgers ... hits out after his side were sent packing from the FA Cup. Source: PAUL ELLIS / AFP

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was disappointed with the young players he handed a chance to as they crashed out of the FA Cup at League One side Oldham.

Rodgers was left bemused by a below-par effort from a mixed Liverpool side in the 3-2 fourth-round defeat at Boundary Park as they were hardly in the game in the first half.

Things improved a little when he brought on added experience in the second period, but Joe Allen's 80th minute goal came too late to turn around a Sunday afternoon the red-faced Liverpool manager would rather forget.

Ties to be played on February 16-17:

Huddersfield Town or Leicester City v Wigan Athletic

Milton Keynes Dons v Barnsley

Oldham Athletic v Everton

Luton Town v Millwall

Arsenal v Blackburn Rovers

Manchester City v Leeds United

Manchester United v Reading

Middlesbrough v Brentford or Chelsea

"We are bitterly disappointed. We started the first half poorly and we started the second half and got punished," Rodgers said. "We've got a big week of games but our mentality in that opening period was poor and it ended up costing us.

"I was disappointed with the young players today I've got to be honest.

"We are trying to give them experience and let them see what it was like to play for Liverpool. It is not just about playing for Liverpool, you have to be competitive and be part of a group that is going to challenge for trophies.

"It is not enough to play for Liverpool and get up for the Arsenal and Manchester City games because if we are going to win trophies you need to be able to come to places like Oldham and win and we weren't good enough for that."
Brendan Rodgers Quotes of the week

"I thought how we reacted to that and how we performed, knowing that is what we are looking for, was disappointing.

"We were just too much on the back foot early on, you really have to be aggressive. These are different games to the Premier League: Premier League games are nice, you go in and teams will pass the ball and give you time to get your shape.

"These games are a different type of football, you have to roll your sleeves up be strong and aggressive and unfortunately for us there were too many who weren't.

"It is just a different type of football where you have to stand up and be counted. It is great to put young players in but you have to have personality and the young players disappointed."

'Cheika can bring success to NSW'

Talking tough ... Cheika isn't too impressed with the ARU's idea. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

Ewen McKenzie believes new Waratahs coach Michael Cheika is tailor-made to reawaken the sleeping Super Rugby giant that is NSW.

Former Waratahs mentor McKenzie, who took the underachieving province to two grand finals in four seasons before being cut adrift in 2008, is wary of a NSW uprising under his long-time Randwick teammate.

Now aiming to guide Queensland to a third straight season on top of the Australian conference, McKenzie knows the task will be tougher with Cheika ensuring a cultural overhaul within a Wallabies-laden roster.

Despite their obvious depth of talent, the Waratahs won just four matches last season and coach Michael Foley quit to link with the Western Force.

''Cheika will culturally get them focussed,'' McKenzie told AAP.

''He's very motivated, he understands team culture and will do a good job.

''And all the players have enjoyed the highest representation in the Wallabies so those two things together will make some sort of difference and that will be good for Australian rugby if the Waratahs are out there.''

McKenzie led NSW to the 2005 and 2008 deciders as well as the 2006 semi-finals but well knows the pressure that comes with the Waratahs job following an injury-hit 2007 and subsequent axing at the end of his five-year contract.

''A lot of people like to contribute,'' he said of the environment.

''In the end Cheiks has a good personality for all of that.

''He doesn't suffer fools, he's pretty much his own man, he'll articulate that and no one will be left not understanding about what's required.

''When you've got that you can drive a team ethos and culture in a certain direction.

''I'm sure they will make good progress.''

Ironically, Cheika - who coached Irish club Leinster to the European Cup before heading to Stade Francais - will make his Super Rugby coaching debut opposing McKenzie when the Waratahs play the Reds at Suncorp Stadium on February 23.

Cheika has quickly earned a reputation for adding a harder edge to the Waratahs through a tough pre-season training campaign, and also admitted bringing cultural change was a major part of his job.

''Ewen knows that more than anyone because he was the last person to be able to put the right identity into the Waratahs jersey,'' Cheika said.

''They had a strong culture then and it's up to us to make sure we have that uncompromising nature about us no matter who plays.

''You know it's a difficult challenge that every coach must meet.

''You just have to make your own page with the guys and get the buy-in with the way we want to do things. So far that's the case.

''I've really enjoyed myself so far.''

Halfback Brendan McKibbin has emerged as a captaincy contender and will lead the Waratahs in their opening two trials, starting Saturday against the Rebels in Hobart.

Blues rue another Shield washout

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 27 Januari 2013 | 18.48

FOR the third time this summer, NSW were left cursing the elements which robbed them of the chance to secure an outright Sheffield Shield victory over Western Australia.

The Blues' clash at Blacktown International Sportspark ended in a draw on Sunday when persistent rain washed out nearly all of the final day.

With WA resuming at 8-211, holding onto a second-innings lead of just 109 runs, the Blues were confident of getting a result before they were confronted by a soggy outfield.

On six occasions the covers were removed, only to be put back moments later as the drizzle persisted.

The players eventually took to the field for 10 overs, with no wickets falling and the Warriors adding just eight runs through Ashton Agar (34) and Jason Behrendorff (seven) to finish 8-219.

NSW claimed first-innings points, thanks to classy half-centuries from Test hopefuls Steve Smith (72) and Moises Henriques (71) that gave them a 102-run first-innings lead.

But the missed opportunity to claim the maximum six points from the game will irk them and Blues coach Chandika Hathurusingha admitted the draw was a "hollow" feeling.

"We were in a good position to get the four points. But you can't do anything about Mother Nature," he said.

Perhaps the most frustrating factor for the luckless Blues is that Mother Nature hasn't been on their side all summer after bad light denied them outright victory against Tasmania in September.

Two months later against Victoria they were denied a chance of forcing a result with the Blues holding onto a 157-run lead on day four but rain and bad light meant just five overs were bowled.

The Blues move to 15 points with a game in hand, but drop to fifth on the Shield ladder following South Australia's one-wicket victory over Victoria on Sunday.

Th Redbacks climbed into third place behind equal leaders Victoria and Queensland who are both on 20 points.

The Sunday washout also denied players a final chance at pushing their Test cases, with the squad for next month's four-Test tour of India expected to be announced on Thursday.

Blues captain Stephen O'Keefe, considered an option to be picked as the back-up spinner to Nathan Lyon, did his chances no harm with match figures of 8-102 to take his season tally to 17 wickets.

Warriors coach Justin Langer said he sympathised with the Blues.

"I'd say it would be particularly frustrating for NSW, they had a great day (on Saturday) and had us really on the back foot," he said.

'Nobody ready for Hussey's spot'

Irreplaceable ... Mike Hussey's retirement from international cricket has left a gaping hole. Source: AAP

Former Test opener Justin Langer says no one is banging down the door to replace Mike Hussey in the Australia team, lamenting the lack of depth in batsmen and spinners across the country.

Hussey retired from international cricket following the three-Test sweep of Sri Lanka earlier this month, opening up a middle-order spot in the Test, one-day and Twenty20 sides.

Queensland's Usman Khawaja is considered the front-runner to claim Hussey's spot in the team for Australia's four-Test tour of India next month, though his Shield average of 39.81 this season doesn't suggest he is dominating at domestic level.

Victorian Rob Quiney was given a two-Test audition, Tasmania's Alex Doolan has been spoken about and budding allrounder Glenn Maxwell is well liked.

But, with champion batsman Ricky Ponting also retiring in December, Langer said there is a dearth of quality batsmen looking to step into Hussey's shoes but nominated former opener Shane Watson as the man to step in in the short term.

''I would say no, there's no one smashing the door down,'' Langer, who until recently was also Australia's batting coach, said.

Western Warriors coach Justin Langer joins Brendon Julian, Allan Border, Stuart MacGill and News Ltd journalist Malcolm Conn on Inside Cricket this week.

The former champion Australia opener will talk about the challenges he faces as he looks to turn around the fortunes of Western Australian cricket.

Plus we'll get JL's take on the state of the game, including the controversial rotation policy and the upcoming tours of India and the UK.

Inside Cricket – 6:30pm EDT, Monday January 28  on Fox Sports 2HD.

''Shane Watson will obviously come back in but I'm not sure who they're going to go with.

''But the reality is no one's really been so good they can't be ignored and that's what we have to get in Australian cricket.

''The lack of perceived depth means there's unbelievable opportunities for kids out there who want to work hard and improve their technique and be mentally resilient.

''Imagine being a youngster now if you're a spinner or a batsman, it'd be awesome.''

Of the other names mentioned to step into Hussey's shoes, Blues allrounder Steve Smith earned praise from Langer.

Langer, as coach of Western Australia, saw first hand Smith's revitalised game as the 23-year-old compiled an impressive knock of 72 on a low, slow Blacktown wicket in their drawn Sheffield Shield match which finished on Sunday.

Smith's patient innings helped secure the Blues first-innings points and certainly caught Langer's eye.

''I thought Steve Smith batted well, whether he comes back in for Test selection I'm not sure,'' he said.

''But I thought he played quite well and in Indian conditions he might get an opportunity.

''I was impressed with how patient he was on a tough wicket and he seemed to have tightened up his game ... (he) showed good discipline.

''He's very talented and I love his work ethic.''

Sydney FC captain Kyah Simon praised her young side after they powered to a 3-1 win over Melbourne Victory to claim their second W-League championship.

Two second-half goals ensured victory for the Sky Blues in what was a hard-fought encounter at AAMI Park.

Melbourne had their chances to secure a maiden grand final win after midfielder Petra Larsson cancelled out Nicola Bolger's opener for Sydney in front of 4181 spectators.

However, goals at either end of the second half from star forwards Sam Kerr and player of the match Simon got the Sky Blues home.

Simon, the only survivor from Sydney's 2009 championship-winning team, was delighted that a youthful Sky Blues side rose to the occasion despite the unavailability of regulars Emma Kete and Ellyse Perry.

Dual international Perry is in India with the Australian cricket team, while Kete was suspended after being sent off last week.

"We lost some crucial players but we have a lot of depth in our team, and all credit to our girls that they stuck in there and played some good football,'' she said.

"The girls did great, doubly so given they are so young and inexperienced but they proved everyone wrong that age doesnt matter.

"There is no better feeling than winning the championship.''

After a tense opening Sydney defender Renee Rollason forced Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Brianna Davey into a superb sprawling save midway through the opening period.

The league's tightest defence, however, was soon breached in unusual fashion as Rebekah Stott's under hit backpass allowed Bolger to charge down Davey's attempted clearance.

On the back foot for periods of the first half, the Victory came back strongly and drew level thanks to a perfectly executed free-kick from Swede Larsson four minutes from the break.

Kerr gave the Sky Blues the ideal start to the second half powering a spectacular diving header into the net after profiting from Simons smart cross.

Sydney goalkeeper Sham Khamis produced an excellent point-blank save to deny Enza Barilla, while at the other end the impressive Davey was at full stretch to keep out Simons powerful strike.

The match remained an open affair with play swinging from end-to-end and both sets of player looking weary as the contest wore on.

Melbourne's hopes were extinguished four minutes from time as Maika Ruyter-Hooley was sent off after bundling over substitute Larissa Crummer which allowed Simon to coolly sweep home the resultant penalty.

Melbourne Victory co-captain Danielle Johnson said her side can continue to build after reaching their first W-League decider.

"I think they (Sydney) did really well in the midfield and it was hard breaking them down,'' she said.

"You learn a lot when you lose so hopefully we can take a lot away from this experience.''

Watson not an open and shut case

Everyone talks about the balance of a side. Sometimes it just doesn't look right, then you move one or two around and it just has a better feel to it.

Australian selectors are hoping their balance is right come Test cricket, that's evident by sticking with Ed Cowan and batting Shane Watson at number four.

But we've heard arguments for Watson to open and that's no surprise when you look at his record.

Watson's career average is only 37, but his average as an opener is 43.67.

Delve deeper, remembering there's a double Ashes campaign coming up and his record against England is even better. He's batted 15 times against them, opening on every occasion and averages 48.21.

Before the Ashes though, there's India, where he's batted 11 times and averaged just over 40.

On seven of those occasions though, he came in at number six. Of the four innings he opened he hit 126, 56, 57 and 32 – averaging just over 67.

It's a compelling argument to have him bat with Warner.

But what about Ed Cowan. He has the look of an opener, but not the stats to match – so far.

In 13 tests and 22 innings he's averaged just 32.82. He did score a ton against South Africa this summer but inconsistency is his biggest problem. But let's not be too quick to crucify him, given Australia really doesn't have a wealth of batting to call on and the retirement of Mike Hussey hasn't helped the cause.

And remember, Matt Hayden was dropped twice from the test team before third time lucky saw him cement his spot. After the same period, 13 tests, Hayden didn't even average 25.

At the back of the selectors minds is Cowan's trip with Australia A to England last year, where he averaged a touch of over 61. His patience and ability to let balls go in moving conditions will be a plus and the selectors are hoping that's the case. It would also make a great foil for Warner.

Clever Cowan will also have stint with Nottinghamshire in the first half of their season, ensuring he gets his eye in before the Ashes.

But with Watson's record as an opener so compelling, Ed is safe for India, a series could make or break him.

We'll get through India first with Warner, Cowan, Hughes, Watson, Clarke and probably Khawaja to make up the top six.

Will the same six play the first test in Trent Bridge in early July?  Selectors hope so because it means form on the board.

But a nasty tour of India could change all that! And well know Watson wants to open !
