Paceman Brett Lee believes a rare loss was just the reality check the Sydney Sixers needed early in their Big Bash League title defence.

The Sixers had a 12-game unbeaten streak snapped in a heavy loss to the previously winless Perth Scorchers on Sunday. It was Sydney's first Twenty20 failure since January.

The defeat has left the side looking a little vulnerable heading into Friday's clash with the Melbourne Stars at the MCG but Lee believes the effects of the loss will be more positive than negative.

''The thing about the other night is I'm actually glad it's happened now,'' Lee said on Wednesday.

''Sometimes you can take some constructive criticism when you lose and you read in the media that we've had a shocking game, which we did.

''We weren't on with bat and ball, field, the whole thing, but I would rather that happened now than in the semis and the finals.''

The Sixers entered the Big Bash League season as reigning champions and Champions League Twenty20 titleholders but Lee hoped the hype around the side would now die down.

''I guess the great thing for us is we were 12 games on the trot and the media were talking about 14-15 games in a row,'' Lee said.

''We had that extra pressure on us to keep going through undefeated.

''But that's done and dusted now, we won't hear any more about that, which is great.

''We can really focus and concentrate on ways to improve.''

Lee was confident the Sixers would bounce back strongly against the Stars, and was looking forward to a showdown with former Test teammate Shane Warne.

Sydney will again be missing Test players David Warner and Mitchell Starc but Lee tipped West Indian spinner Sunil Narine to have a big impact in his second match for the club.

Narine had figures of 0-16 from four overs in the loss to the Scorchers.

''I thought he bowled very well without luck. He bowled beautifully,'' Lee said.

''He's going to play a huge role for us in the game and as the series go on.''
