ST KILDA captain Nick Riewoldt has called on authorities to prosecute internet trolls who utter racial abuse via social media after footy's latest racial outburst.

Hawthorn star Cyril Rioli is the latest indigenous star to be devastated by racial abuse, outing an Instagram follower who posted vile outbursts.

Rioli said he was angered to be racially abused "in a week of celebration", a year after Adam Goodes was racially abused on the opening night of indigenous Round.

Riewoldt said it was time for the country to think long and hard about punishment for those who took social media abuse too far.

"If there is one thing I could change around the world I would ban social media. It is the root of a lot of problems,'' he said.

"It creates cowards with no lives who go about trying to cause havoc and stress and feelings of hate towards people they have never met but formulate an opinion on.

"To hear that's happened (to Cyril) it doesn't surprise me because those people are out there.

"I think the country has to get serious about legislation and laws surrounding social media and bullying and cyber bullying because we have seen people take their own lives and it's a social issue and something needs to be done about it."

Rioli's photo of him and friends in the Tiwi Islands was attacked by an internet follower, with the Hawthorn star replying: "In a week of celebration I get this sh**. Feel sorry for you son."

A Perth man was this year charged after racially abusing West Coast star Nic Naitanui, and banned from contacting him or posting further social media comments.

The man was charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence after a series of

Riewoldt told Triple M his cousin Jack Riewoldt had stopped using all social media given the abuse he was subjected to.

North Melbourne champion Wayne Schwass, who battled depression during his career, lauded Rioli for posting the offensive material.

"I applaud Cyril for having the guts to turn that around and bring it to the attention of everyone. For a young kid coming through they have it at their fingertips and they take and take on these things."
