JAMES Courtney stormed through the field for a stunning Clipsal 500 race victory - but that doesn't even scrape the surface of a Sunday smash 'em up Clipsal 500 on Sunday.
Holden Racing Team pin-up Courtney scored a dramatic comeback win in Adelaide, holding off a desperate Craig Lowndes in a race that will be remembered for Jason Bright's horrifying roll-over in the Senna Chicane.
Just 10 of the 25 starters finished on the lead lap of a race that delivered pile-ups, crashes, penalties, mechanical failures and safety car periods, and was shortened by two laps under time constraints.

Courtney - who broke his leg in a horror smash at Phillip Island in November - rebounded from 15th spot on the grid in his first event back, finishing ahead of Red Bull's Lowndes and Shane Van Gisbergen.

Race report: James Courtney wins Clipsal finale
Adelaide boy Nick Percat was on track for a home-town podium in his Clipsal 500 debut but crashed out four laps from the flag, catching the outside wall at turn eight while trying to defend fast-finishing pole-sitter van Gisbergen.
The chaotic race condemned each of defending series champion Jamie Whincup, Saturday hero and Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin and Erebus pair Will Davison and Lee Holdsworth to early finishes.

Bright was involved in one of the ugliest V8 Supercar smashes in Clipsal 500's 16 years when his car rolled at high speed before slamming into the safety barriers - thrusting its nose 4m above the ground before landing, upturned - following a safety car restart on lap 14.
The Brad Jones Racing veteran was the victim of a three-way fight for position with Garth Tander and Tim Slade at the restart. In the congestion, Tander's car was forced into Bright's, catching it in just the right place to flip it upside down. Amazingly, he walked unscathed from the wreck.
Ford Performance Racing's Chaz Mostert joined Lee Holdsworth and SA boy Scott Pye in the restart carnage and were shut down for the weekend.

Ahead of the pile-ups, Whincup and Lowndes had looked to be marching to an untroubled team one-two before Lowndes showed signs of losing speed on lap 50.
Courtney passed him and just seconds later Whincup was pinged for a pitstop violation, after officials ruled the team had too many workers at the stop.
Whincup's drive-through penalty dropped him to eighth, leaving Courtney, Lowndes and McLaughlin fighting for the podium spots.
The five-time champ's day officially ended on lap 63 when he came together with Nissan's Michael Caruso and busted his left-front wheel, forcing the pair to park in the garage.

McLaughlin's Adelaide fairytale exploded with battery problems just 12 laps from the finish and the Kiwi young gun limped to a stop having sat as high as second.
Turn eight claimed its first victim on lap nine when Davison's maiden weekend with his Mercedes-powered stable ended spectacularly, amid a flying tyre and passenger-side door.
Davison was searching for a line past Norton Hornet James Moffat but the pair touched just enough to unsettle the Erebus car and send it scraping along the outside concrete, shredding the leftside of his car.
