A-LEAGUE club owners are to be offered far longer licences, with Football Federation Australia to open talks on Tuesday that could even lead to "licences for life".

Acknowledging an area that has long been a key demand of clubs, FFA CEO David Gallop yesterday said that the owners deserved greater long-term security.

8 Heart 3 0 2 1 -1 2
9 Wellington 3 0 2 1 -1 2
10 Newcastle 3 0 2 1 -2 2

Currently all licences run until 2020, except for Wellington which is only until 2016 because of a special agreement with the Asian Football Confederation.

Club owners have argued that they find it hard to raise funding on the basis of a short-term licence, and that the relatively truncated periods offer little incentive to make long-term investments in the clubs.

It's also believed that a long-term tenure has been identified as necessary for the sale of the Wanderers, with investment bank UBS talking to potential suitors in the marketplace on behalf of FFA in the hope of a $15m sale.

No guts, no glory ... Tony Sage is one of the more passionate club owners in the A-League.

The owners meet FFA today and Gallop said a variety of options will be discussed – from far longer licence periods, to making them limitless but subject to periodic "performance reviews".

"The competition is on a growth projector," Gallop said. "It is time to give our owners greater security for their investment and long term planning.

"Whether the licences should become perpetual with appropriate safeguards or lengthened for a significant period will be determined soon."

A-League owners on Monday reacted with caution ahead of today's meeting, waiting to see the detail on offer.
But Mariners general Manager Peter Turnbull said the prospect was promising.

"It's good that the FFA is prepared to talk about this because having security in our licence is crucial to the development of the clubs," Turnbull said.

"The key thing is that we are able to own our businesses when the need for fresh investment arises."
