In a match which featured two yellow cards and the competition's first red, the Crusaders had too much firepower, opening up in the second half after holding a narrow six-point lead at halftime.

All Blacks five-eighth Dan Carter was in outstanding form, slotting all eight of his kicks at goal and running in a well-taken try as he racked up a game-high 25 points for the Crusaders.

The game featured some poor discipline from both teams, Highlanders flanker Jarrad Hoeata receiving his third yellow card of the season midway through the first half.

Teammate Ma'a Nonu was issued a red soon after he was subbed on in the second half for a tip tackle on Crusaders winger Tom Marshall, while Crusaders hooker Corey Flynn spent 10 minutes in the sin bin after a high tackle on halfback Aaron Smith.

Carter opened the scoring with an early 45m-plus penalty, but in-form All Blacks back Ben Smith put the home team ahead after nine minutes when he latched onto a miracle Tamati Ellison behind-the-back offload to score.

Carter sliced through the midfield for the break which led to George Whitelock's try on 30 minutes, then slotted another penalty right on the half-time whistle to give the Crusaders a 13-7 lead at the break.

The Crusaders extended their lead four minutes after the restart, halfback Andy Ellis taking advantage of some lacklustre Highlanders defence to touch down.

The Highlanders pulled one back 13 minutes later, Hosea Gear celebrating his 100th Super Rugby match by finishing off a superb end-to-end effort to narrow the Crusaders' lead to eight.

Carter grabbed the Crusaders third try on 66 minutes, then Telusa Veianu's 90m run to score under the posts secured the bonus-point win right on the fulltime siren.
