A fighting half-century from Moises Henriques ensured Australia's first Test against India in Chennai went into a fifth day.

The match looked as good as over when Mitchell Starc holed out for 8 with Australia still trailing the hosts by 17 runs and plenty of time remaining to take the final wicket of Nathan Lyon.

But Henriques and Lyon had other ideas, combining for the biggest partnership of the innings to pass India's total and end the day on 9-232, a lead of 40, with Henriques not out on 75.

The hosts added another 62 runs to their overnight total before eventually being bowled out for 572 in their first innings, with captain MS Dhoni finishing on 224 while paceman James Pattinson picked up his fifth wicket.

Shane Watson opened the batting in Australia's second innings in place of an ill David Warner, and the 31-year-old lasted until the final over before lunch, when he was removed by Ravichandran Ashwin for 17.

Ashwin was again the chief destroyer for India, picking up a further four wickets, including the key scalp of Aussie skipper Michael Clarke for 31, to now have the brilliant match figures of 12-193.

He was ably supported by fellow spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Harbhajan Singh, while paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar didn't even rolling the arm over.
