Melbourne Stars got out of jail against Sydney Thunder at the MCG on Tuesday night, securing a spot in the KFC T20 Big Bash League semi-finals in the process.

The Stars' semi-finals hopes looked as good as gone while Chris Gayle was at the crease, as the West Indies star finally hit top gear with a scintilatting 65 off 43 balls.

His half-century was the quickest of this season's BBL.

But after Gayle was dismissed, the Thunder fell apart, eventually being bowled out for 132 in the final over, 13 runs short of the Stars' total.

Earlier, tight bowling from Dirk Nannes and good fielding from Gayle helped restrict the Stars to 8-145 from their 20 overs.

Brad Hodge and David Hussey combined for a 58-run partnership during the middle of the innings.

Shane Warne was suspended from playing or even sitting on the sidelines with his teammates, but did give the Stars players words of encouragement in the dressing rooms.
