Ricky Ponting built his 168-Test career on fighting characteristics, but the retiring great must be part of history if Australia are to avoid a knock-out series defeat to South Africa in Perth.

Australia 2nd Innings

E. Cowan 9 46 0 0 19.57
D. Warner 29 32 5 0 90.63
M. Morkel 3 0 9 0 3.00

Superb displays from Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers have virtually extinguished Australia's hopes of stealing the Proteas' No.1 Test ranking and clinching the series.

Openers Ed Cowan (9) and David Warner (29) survived a nervous final hour before stumps, but at 0-40 Australia still require another 592 runs to win.

The Proteas were finally bowled out for 569 in their second innings as they set Australia a world record chase of 632.

A glimmer of hope appeared for Australia when Morne Morkel (0-9) appeared to roll his ankle, but the big quick got up to rejoin the attack alongside Dale Steyn (0-14) and Vernon Philander (0-15).

Ponting will get a final innings to farewell Test cricket, and with two days left to bat, he'll certainly have plenty of time to set about building a big score.

But with the odds stacked against him and the team, Ponting is relying on a fairytale to end all fairytales if he's to go out on a high.

South Africa completely demoralised Australia for a second straight day on Sunday, with Amla (196) and de Villiers (169) the chief destroyers.

The 569 was the biggest humiliation Australia's attack had suffered since the emphatic Ashes defeats of two summers ago.

Mitchell Starc took a career-high haul of 6-154 and Mitchell Johnson (4-110) claimed the other four wickets, but it was too little too late for Australia.

A relentless South Africa went more than 200 runs past the biggest mark ever for a successful fourth innings chase - 418 by the West Indies against Australia in 2003.

Australia will feel nothing is completely out of the question, while ever game-changers Warner, Michael Clarke and Mike Hussey are on deck.

Johnson has been known for his erratic bowling in the past, but he was by far the most economical for Australia on day three.

He's also lost none of his brilliant reflexes and athleticism in the field - executing his second incredible caught-and-bowled dismissal for the match when he hung onto a return fire-ball from Amla.

The sheer dominance of Amla - who stroked 21 boundaries - pushed Australia to the brink.

He was 99 overnight with South Africa 2-230, and brought up his second century of the series in the first over of the day. It was the 29-year-old run-machine's 18th Test century, and comfortably his quickest.

Dean Elgar was trapped lbw by Johnson four balls after Amla fell, to ensure a demoralising pair on debut.

The left-armer needs just four wickets to crack the exclusive 200-wicket club.

Starc knocked over Graeme Smith (84), Jacques Kallis (37), de Villiers as well as tailenders Robin Petersen and Dale Steyn.

De Villiers eventually lost concentration, but not before he'd smashed 21 boundaries, including three in a row from reverse sweeps to bring up his hundred, and three sixes in an emphatic return to form.

Johnson and Starc received little help from their fellow bowlers - with John Hastings (0-102), Shane Watson (0-24) and Nathan Lyon (0-128) unable to earn a breakthrough in the second innings.
