Heat speedster Alister McDermott made the early breakthroughs with the wickets of Michael Klinger and James Smith inside the first three overs.
Fellow paceman Ben Cutting then removed the dangerous Tim Ludeman, who'd earlier smashed two sixes on his way to 18.
Callum Ferguson and Nathan Reardon then set about the recovery mission, the pair taking the score to 90 before the latter skied a catch to long-on from the bowling of Thisara Perera.
Ferguson went on to reach 50 but was then out the very next ball as he found Nathan Hauritz at deep cover.
That left West Indies import Kieron Pollard with the responsibility of moving the home side towards a competitive total and the towering all-rounder obliged with a quick-fire 48 from just 23 balls.
