A day after securing Justin Langer as coach, Western Australia notched their first Sheffield Shield victory of the season with a 110-run triumph over South Australia at the WACA Ground.

The Redbacks looked well and truly out of the contest early on the third day when dismissed for 237 in response to WA's 9(dec)-400, but roared back to life by bowling out the Warriors for just 191 in their second innings.

It could have been much less than that had it not been for Tom Triffitt's highest first-class score of 85, but it still left South Australia with some hope of chasing down 355 with just over day's play remaining.

Opener Sam Raphael couldn't quite survive until stumps as he fell lbw to Mitch Marsh for 12, Phil Hughes remaining not out on 17 and nightwatchman Joe Mennie unbeaten on two.

After WA took South Australia's last four wickets in the morning session for just 28 runs, Liam Davis (0), Marcus Harris (0) and Marcus North (1) all fell quickly, with the Warriors slumping to 3-3.

Adam Voges and Sam Whiteman steadied the ship before Voges was out just before lunch for three and Marsh fell for a 27-ball duck.

The score was 6-28 when Whiteman was run out for 15 and then 7-52 when Nathan Coulter-Nile fell for six.

Triffitt then combined for a 67-run partnership with Mitchell Johnson (38) before eventually falling for 85 from just 97 balls, his knock including 11 fours and a six.

He was the victim of an outstanding outfield catch from Callum Ferguson off the bowling of the underused Jake Haberfield.

Michael Beer added his second highest first-class score and remained not out on 26 with Michael Hogan the last wicket to fall for seven.

Chadd Sayers remained the pick of South Australia's bowlers taking 3-37 from 17 overs with Mennie finishing with 3-42, Haberfield 2-15 and Johan Botha 1-42.
